District and H-E-B representatives surprised Herff Elementary fifth grade teacher Ninette Ligarde and her students with news she is a regional finalist for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Elementary level in the H-E-B 20th Anniversary Excellence in Education Awards. 

H-E-B representative Jill Reynolds explained to the applauding students the significance of the award at the brief ceremony Feb. 24.

“Your teacher has been chosen as one of five in this category in the state of Texas, so you’ve got a really outstanding teacher,” Reynolds said. 

As part of the honor, Ligarde received a check for $1,000 for herself and another $1,000 for Herff Elementary. 

Ligarde has been in bilingual education for more than 25 years. She began teaching in San Antonio ISD, but moved to Puebla, Mexico in the early 1990s, where she provided free English as a Second Language classes to the underserved communities of Puebla. After noticing a need for inclusive education and special programs for the gifted and talented, she decided to open her own bilingual school called Instituto Interactivo Alfred Binet (IIAB), where she and her school received numerous recognitions.

In 2020, she moved back to San Antonio and began teaching at Herff Elementary, where she and her students adapted to the challenges presented by the pandemic.

“I’m very grateful, especially to SAISD for believing in me,” Ligarde said. "They allowed me to show you what I could do and allowed me to do it with no hesitation. Thank you for allowing me that privilege.”

When H-E-Buddy walked into the room, Ligarde gathered her students for a group photo and hug. 

“I wouldn't be here if it wasn’t for my students,” Ligarde said. “Son mi familia — they are my family. Everything I do rotates around my kids here.”

H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards recognize six teachers in three categories — one each in elementary and secondary for The Rising Star Award, The Leadership Award, and The Lifetime Achievement award. Winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the state-wide level receive $25,000 each for themselves and for their schools. Ligarde will go on to compete against four other elementary teachers in the Lifetime Achievement category. Winners will be announced at a gala in Houston on May 6.

Los representantes del distrito y de H-E-B sorprendieron a la maestra de quinto grado de Herff Elementary Ninette Ligarde y a sus estudiantes con la noticia de que es una finalista regional para el premio Lifetime Achievement Award al nivel de primaria para el vigésimo aniversario de los premios Excellence in Education Awards de H-E-B.

Jill Reynolds, representante de H-E-B, les explicó a los entusiasmados estudiantes el significado del premio en una breve ceremonia el 24 de feb.

 
“Su maestra ha sido seleccionada como una entre cinco en esta categoría en el estado de Texas, así que tienen una maestra realmente espectacular”, dijo Reynolds.

Cuando H-E-Buddy entró al salón, Ligarde juntó a sus estudiantes para tomarse una foto de grupo. 

 
“Yo no estaría aquí si no fuera por mis estudiantes”, dijo Ligarde. “Son mi familia. Todo lo que hago está centrado en los niños”.

 
Los premios Excellence in Education Awards de H-E-B reconocen a seis maestros en tres categorías — uno en los grados inferiores y en los grados superiores para los siguientes premios: The Rising Star Award, The Leadership Award y The Lifetime Achievement Award. Los ganadores del premio Lifetime Achievement Award al nivel estatal reciben $25,000 para su uso personal y para sus escuelas. Ligarde competirá contra cuatro maestras de primaria en la categoría de Lifetime Achievement. Los ganadores se anunciarán en una en Houston el 6 de mayo.
