March 2 was Read Across America Day, and Highland Hills Elementary second graders had the privilege of stocking up the school’s new Little Free Library. It’s a project that had been months in the making for digital teacher librarian Paula Lenington.  

“I really feel that our community is going to benefit from just having the opportunity to have books,” Lenington said.

Little Free Library sent the school a complete kit for their library, which was installed in the front driveway, so families could have easy after-hours access to select new books and drop off gently used ones. 

“The whole point is to be able to make it a community thing,” Lenington said. “So if you get tired of books, you can put them in there and someone else can enjoy them instead of throwing them away or instead of letting them lay around your house.”

In a short ceremony this morning with Principal Deborah Esparza, Lenington cut the ribbon on the Little Library before a class of excited students got to place the first inventory inside. 

“It’s wonderful,” Esparza said. “Lenington did all the paperwork; she did all the hard work. I’ve been in the district 29 years — she’s one of the best librarians.”

The school will now be listed among the 125,000 Little Libraries that are in all 50 states and 11 countries around the world.

Highland Hills debuta Little Free Library

El 2 de marzo fue el Día de Lectura en EE. UU., y los estudiantes de segundo grado de Highland Hills Elementary tuvieron el privilegio de llenar la nueva Little Free Library (Pequeña Biblioteca Gratis) de la escuela. Paula Lenington, bibliotecaria/maestra digital, lleva meses trabajando en este proyecto.  

“Realmente siento que nuestra comunidad se beneficiará gracias a la oportunidad de tener libros”, dijo Lenington.

Little Free Library le envió un kit completo a la escuela para su biblioteca, la cual se instaló en la parte delantera del edificio, para que las familias pudieran tener acceso después de clases a libros nuevos y para dejar libros usados. 

“La idea es poder lograr que sea un esfuerzo comunitario”, dijo Lenington. “Así que, si se cansan de los libros, pueden llevarlos allí y alguien más los puede disfrutar en lugar de tirarlos o dejar que se queden en la casa sin usar”.

En una breve ceremonia esta mañana con la Directora Deborah Esparza, Lenington cortó el listón en la Little Library antes de que una clase de estudiantes entusiasmados pudieran colocar el inventario inaugural adentro. 

“Es maravilloso”, dijo Esparza. “Lenington llenó todos los formularios; ella hizo todo el trabajo difícil. He estado en el distrito por 29 años — ella es una de las mejores bibliotecarias”.

La escuela ahora estará entre las 125,000 Little Libraries que se encuentran en los 50 estados y 11 países de todo el mundo.
