The special education department at Schenck Elementary is giving back to the community through a new recycling project.
Special Education teachers Ugonna Onyekwere, Kelsey Calhoun, and Theresa Graham spearheaded the project, inspired by T-TESS Domain 4.4, School Community Involvement. They reached out to facilities to get recycling bins for the campus.
“I am always excited when a campus reaches out and wants to partner with us,” Aaron Stein, director of energy and sustainability in facility services, said. “Our role in facilities is to help set the campuses up for success.”
Facilities worked with the district partners at Waste Management to arrange the delivery of the bins to the campus, along with informational posters and handouts about what can and cannot be recycled in the single-stream recycling program. Now, classrooms individually set aside their clean paper, plastic, cardboard, and aluminum in the recycle bins throughout the week, and at the end of each week, student leaders in the project empty the individual bins and transport to a centralized recycling bin.
On a recent Friday, students in the Alternative Curriculum Environment (ACE) class were collecting the weekly recyclables.
“It's great to see the students take ownership of their role to help the school,” Calhoun and Graham explained. “When we go into the classrooms to pick up the other students are excited for us to be there, saying ‘hi’ and ‘thank you.’ Since it might be difficult for our students to participate in other clubs, they love getting to feel that appreciation and be a part of the community.”
Part of the program at Schenck includes monthly lessons on recycling.
“I think it is very important that we are conscientious about our environment,” principal Susan Del Toro said. “It starts in elementary school with our students. It is something we talk about and educate our kids through science and through Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) to make sure that we are creating environmentally conscious citizens.”
Stein said he hopes the recycling programs can expand as more schools become interested.
“My hope is that other campuses will want to learn about this and perhaps also approach recycling as a community service project,” Stein said. “We can support them with bins, with handouts, and other resources as needed to help make them successful. We are really excited to be involved.”

Schenck comienza nuevo programa de reciclaje

El Departamento de Instalaciones trabajó con los socios del distrito en Waste Management para planificar la entrega de recipientes a la escuela, junto con carteles informativos y volantes sobre lo que se puede y lo que no se puede reciclar en el programa de reciclaje de flujo único. Ahora, los salones apartan individualmente su papel, plástico, cartón y aluminio limpio en los recipientes de reciclaje durante la semana, y al final de cada semana, los estudiantes líderes del proyecto vacían los recipientes individuales y transportan el material a un recipiente de reciclaje centralizado.
En un viernes reciente, los estudiantes en la clase de Entorno con Plan de Estudios Alternativo (ACE) recolectó el reciclaje de la semana.
“Es genial ver a los estudiantes hacerse responsables de ayudar a la escuela”, explicaron Calhoun y Graham. “Cuando entramos a los salones para recoger, los demás estudiantes están felices de vernos y dicen ‘hola’ y ‘gracias’. Ya que puede ser difícil para nuestros estudiantes participar en otros clubs, les encanta sentirse apreciados y ser parte de la comunidad”.
Parte del programa en Schenck incluye lecciones mensuales sobre el reciclaje.
“Siento que es muy importante que estemos conscientes de nuestro medio ambiente”, dijo la directora Susan Del Toro. “Comienza en la escuela primaria con nuestros estudiantes. Es algo sobre lo que hablamos y les enseñamos a nuestros niños por medio de las ciencias y a través de los Apoyos e Intervenciones de Comportamiento Positivo (PBIS) para asegurar que estamos creando a ciudadanos con conciencia ecológica”.
Stein dice que espera que los programas de reciclaje se amplíen a medida que más escuelas muestran interés.
“Espero que otras escuelas quieran aprender sobre esto y tal vez también aborden el reciclaje como un proyecto de servicio comunitario”, dijo Stein. “Los podemos ayudar con recipientes, volantes y otros recursos según sea necesario para ayudarles a lograr el éxito. Nos sentimos entusiasmados de poder estar involucrados”.
