YMLA prepares to graduate first senior class
04/06/2022

Senior at YMLAIt's not a typical year for the Young Men's Leadership Academy. Opening in August 2015, the single-gender campus has served elementary, middle and high school students. But this year is its very first graduating class of seniors.

"It's a beautiful thing to see them blossom from pre-teens to soon-to-be-graduates," assistant principal Daniel Luna said. "We can't believe how much they've grown. It's special. I'm excited to see what the future has in store for them."

The 29 seniors will soon be off to different schools across the country to hone their education to their preferred area of study. But for now they are relishing their moment in time at YMLA, where they have all grown together and learned to become a brotherhood.

Senior Jonathan Rodriguez, who was a 2022 QuestBridge scholar finalist, credits YMLA for helping him come out of his shell. It's a defining moment for him as he looks at the possibility of studying at MIT in the fall.

"This environment has impacted me because we have a strong sense of brotherhood," he said. "It really is an experience. We all know what we are capable of. We work together well. We're never truly alone."

Science teacher Jose Maldonado calls it a "building community" where his boys build each other up instead of competing in a negative way against one another. Maldonado has been in education for 12 years and YMLA is his longest tenure at a school, simply because of the rich environment that has been created by school leader Derrick Brown, the teachers and of course, the all-male roster of students.

Maldonado says that in this single-gender environment, the boys don't compete against each other in destructive ways, and distractions are limited.

"You feel the bond among them and I've been a part of that to help build it from the beginning," he said.

Maldonado decided to write his seniors a personalized letter telling them what he thought they needed to hear.

"There was one student I wrote to about using his voice," Maldonado said. "He's very bright, very passionate about what he does. But a lot of times he listens to his friends or society over his own voice.”

This kind of practice and personalization creates high energy and high expectations, said college bound advisor Jocelyn More.

"Being around boys, it's a lot of 'high' everything. From energy to enthusiasm, there is a lot of pride here. And this year, there's class rings, yearbooks, everything that has to do with graduation," More said. "They are polished and mannered. They are leaders."

That important character trait will remain strong at YMLA, mostly because, according to Luna, they are setting the groundwork for the underclassmen at the school.

"They are role models to the younger classes through and through, " he said, "from athletics to tutoring."

The legacy of leadership and excellence will always have a place at YMLA as it forges a path forward, teaching young men lessons in the classroom, but also in life.
