Students at Herff and Arnold elementaries have been tackling some big problems this year, and they’re ready to share some solutions.

Over the past year, students at the two dual language campuses have been collaborating via Zoom with students at the Instituto Interactivo Alfred Binet in Puebla, Mexico, to come up with innovative building materials and methods of recycling to reduce global warming and climate change. They are set to present their results during a Global Warming Awareness program April 27.

“These kids’ voices need to be heard,” Herff fifth-grade dual language teacher Ninette Ligarde said. “That’s what I am trying to do with this project. They want to be part of the change and we need to listen to them.”

Ligarde worked with first- and fourth-grade teachers at Herff and Arnold fifth-grade dual language teacher Alejandra Espinoza to create the concept for the presentation.

Grounded in the response to the 2017 7.1 magnitude earthquake, which had its epicenter in Puebla, the students examined sustainable building materials that would be both economical and environmentally friendly. They were inspired by the robust recycling program at Arnold, and the methods being used to rebuild in Puebla.

As part of their project, Ligarde’s students studied the physical properties of matter, which materials are better conductors of heat, and the costs of various building materials. Both Instituto Interactivo Alfred Binet and Herff are making prototypes of eco-friendly houses made of recycled materials — plastic bottle “bricks” stuffed with grocery bags. The Herff community also built an ecological bench April 16 using this method.

At the presentation next week, which will be both in person and via Zoom to allow the students from all three schools to participate, mariachis from Poe Middle School will perform, before the students from the project’s three schools present their findings in several parts: an overview of global warming, sustainable building materials, alternative energy sources, and recycling. The program will conclude with songs and dances focusing on unity and celebration.

“We’ve turned it into something that embraces culture,” Ligarde said. “We are going to teach you something, make you aware that all of us united can make a difference. Our students want to be part of the change.”

Los estudiantes en las escuelas primarias de Herff y Arnold han estado abordando problemas bastante grandes, y están listos para compartir algunas soluciones.

 
A lo largo del año pasado, los estudiantes en las dos escuelas de lenguaje dual han estado colaborando por Zoom con estudiantes del Instituto Interactivo Alfred Binet en Puebla, México, para encontrar materiales innovadores de construcción y métodos de reciclaje para reducir el calentamiento global y cambio climático. Están listos para presentar sus resultados durante un programa de Concientización del Calentamiento Global el 27 de abril.

 
“Deben escucharse las voces de estos estudiantes”, dijo Ninette Ligarde, maestra de lenguaje dual de quinto grado. “Es lo que estoy tratando de hacer con este proyecto. Quieren ser parte del cambio y necesitamos escucharlos”.

 
Ligarde trabajó con estudiantes de primero y cuarto grado y con Alejandra Espinoza, maestra de lenguaje dual de quinto grado, para crear un concepto para la presentación.

 
En base a la respuesta al terremoto de magnitud 7.1 en 2017, cuyo epicentro fue en Puebla, los estudiantes examinaron materiales de construcción sostenibles que fueran económicos y ecológicos. Fueron inspirados por el robusto programa de reciclaje en Arnold y los métodos que se utilizaron para volver a construir en Puebla.

 
Como parte del proyecto, los estudiantes de Ligarde estudiaron las propiedades físicas de la materia, cuáles materiales conducen mejor el calor y los costos de varios materiales de construcción. Tanto el Instituto Interactivo Alfred Binet como Herff están creando prototipos de casas ecológicas hechas de materiales reciclados, “ladrillos” de botellas de plástico llenos de bolsas de plástico. La comunidad de Herff también construyó una banca ecológica el 16 de abril usando este método.

 
En la presentación la semana que entra, que se llevará a cabo en persona y por Zoom para permitirles a los estudiantes de las tres escuelas que participen, se presentarán los mariachis de Poe Middle School, antes de que los estudiantes de las tres escuelas presenten sus hallazgos en varias partes: un resumen del calentamiento global, materiales sostenibles de construcción, fuentes de energía alternativa y reciclaje. El programa terminará con canciones y bailes que se enfocarán en unidad y celebración.

 
“Lo hemos convertido en algo que destaca la cultura”, dijo Ligarde. “Vamos a enseñarles algo y a demostrar que todos unidos podemos marcar una diferencia. Nuestros estudiantes quieren ser parte del cambio”.
