Several Fox Tech High School students didn’t let the south Texas humidity hamper their excitement as they put the finishing touches on a colorful mural they've worked on for two days (April 9 and April 29) and about 10 hours in a parking garage for doctors at the Baptist Medical Center downtown. 

What started out as a blank wall has transformed into a labor of love and masterpiece that is brightening up what is usually a lackluster parking garage for the hospital’s physicians. Gabriel Morales, visual arts instructor and the students’ teacher at Fox Tech High School, said the mural the students named “Physicians are our Heroes” is a gift to the doctors and nurses of the hospital. It recognizes the work these healthcare heroes accomplish every day helping to care for the community they serve.

Morales also said it helps to connect students to a hospital where they may work someday as many of the student muralists are studying in the high school’s health and law magnet program.

“We saw this as a great opportunity because many of these students are interested in pursuing careers in the medical field after they graduate,” Morales said. “With Baptist Medical Center being just right across the street from our school, it is a great way to come here and connect with the doctors and staff that the students look up to,” he said.

Fox Tech junior and one of the muralists Maricruz Peña said she was inspired to be a nurse when she was 10 years old.

“My brother was born right at this very hospital Baptist Medical Center,” Peña said. “I saw the great care the nurses here gave him and my mom. They were all really nice and so I want to be that kind of a nurse after I graduate.” 

Peña along with her muralist classmates said they enjoy giving back to the healthcare heroes who have made an impact on them throughout the years.

Natalie Obregon Ramirez, junior at Fox Tech and one of the muralists, said she wants to be an obstetrician.

“During the pandemic, the doctors and nurses went through a lot of struggles and so this is our way to say thank you for everything they do for all of us and our families,” she said.

The mural was completed Friday, April 29, and is already being admired and enjoyed by the doctors and nurses who come and go throughout their shifts. 

Luis Velez, a nephrologist who practices with Baptist Medical Center, stopped to commend the students on their work and admire the mural.

“It’s great to see these students using their talents and doing something so positive,” Dr. Velez said.

Estudiantes obsequian mural de superhéroe a hospital

Varios estudiantes de Fox Tech High School no permitieron que la humedad del sur de Texas arruinara su emoción a medida que le dieron los toques finales a un mural colorido en el que han trabajado por dos días (9 y 29 de abril) y alrededor de 10 horas en un estacionamiento para doctores en el Baptist Medical Center. 

Lo que comenzó con una pared en blanco se ha transformado en una obra maestra de amor que está embelleciendo lo que normalmente es un estacionamiento común y corriente para los médicos del hospital. Gabriel Morales, maestro de artes visuales en Fox Tech High School, dijo que el mural al que los estudiantes titularon “Los médicos son nuestros héroes” es un regalo para los doctores y enfermeros del hospital. Reconoce la labor que estos héroes de atención médica realizan todos los días al ayudar a cuidar a la comunidad a la que prestan servicio.

 
Morales dijo que también ayuda a conectar a los estudiantes con un hospital en el que tal vez trabajen algún día, ya que muchos de los estudiantes muralistas están estudiando en el programa magnet de salud y de profesiones jurídicas de la preparatoria.

“Consideramos que esta sería una gran oportunidad porque muchos de estos estudiantes están interesados en profesiones en el ámbito médico después de graduarse”, dijo Morales. “Ya que el Baptist Medical Center está al cruzar la calle de nuestra escuela, es una gran forma de venir y conectar con los doctores y el personal a quienes los estudiantes admiran”, dijo.

Una de las muralistas y estudiante de tercer año de preparatoria, Maricruz Peña, dijo que ella se sintió inspirada a ser enfermera cuando tenía 10 años.

 
“Mi hermano nació en este mismo hospital, Baptist Medical Center”, dijo Peña. “Vi el gran cuidado que recibieron él y mi mamá por parte de los enfermeros. Todos fueron tan amables, y yo quiero ser ese tipo de enfermera después de graduarme”. 

Peña y sus compañeros muralistas disfrutaron poder hacer algo por los héroes de atención médica que han marcado una diferencia para ellos a lo largo de los años.

Natalie Obregon Ramirez, estudiante de tercer año de preparatoria y una de las muralistas, dijo que ella quiere ser obstetra.

“Durante la pandemia, los doctores y las enfermeras pasaron por muchas dificultades y esta es nuestra forma de agradecerles por todo lo que hacen por nosotros y nuestras familias”, dijo ella.
El mural se completó el viernes 29 de abril y ya lo pueden admirar y disfrutar los doctores y enfermeros que vienen y van a lo largo de sus turnos. 

 
Luis Velez, un nefrólogo que trabaja con el Baptist Medical Center, se tomó un momento para encomiar a los estudiantes por su trabajo y para admirar el mural.

“Es genial ver a estos estudiantes usando sus talentos y haciendo algo tan positivo”, dijo el Dr. Velez.
