As seniors throughout the district prepare to cross the stage in June, 19 students in their final year at Burbank High School are doing so having amassed more than $1 million in scholarship offers.
Dubbed the Million Dollar Scholars Club, it’s a deliberate effort at Burbank to help students make the best choice for the next step in their academic endeavors.
“I found out about the program freshman year,” Brianna Sanchez said. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to reach that goal, but it was easy. The college bound advisors helped me a lot.”
Headed to Texas A&M University College Station to study forensic and investigative sciences, Sanchez has seen her efforts pay off already.
“I was offered a full ride so it’s nice not to worry about money,” Sanchez said.
Arturo Martinez and Sheryl Lew, the school’s two college bound advisors, created the program in spring 2019 to recognize the hard work of seniors trying to leverage the best scholarship offers.
In the program’s first year, they had six Million Dollar Scholars. The program grew, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, to eight seniors in 2020, and 10 in 2021, and reached 19 this year.
To reach $1 million in scholarship offers, the students are using fee waivers to apply to multiple universities and are also applying for private scholarships such as those offered through the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation.
“We have a strong college-going culture on campus and this recognition has helped our students apply for more colleges,” Martinez said. “Our students have so many options to see what they can get in Texas or out of state. As an International Baccalaureate campus, we want to encourage all our students to look at their ‘likely,’ ‘target,’ or ‘reach’ colleges.”
Of this year's 19 Million Dollar Scholars, 16 are first-generation college students. Without the ability to rely on the experience of family members, they have found the guidance of the college bound advisors essential through the application, comparison, and negotiation process.
“I was by myself a lot,” Amberlin Casiano said. “I’ve had to do everything, with the help of Mr. Martinez and Ms. Lew. My mom inspired me to get to this point, but she didn’t know how ApplyTexas worked or how the application process went at UT.”
Headed to the University of Texas at Austin to study nursing, Casiano says she has her first year completely paid for, and then some, with scholarships renewable up to four years.
That’s a cause for celebration. The students in this elite club will participate in a special recognition ceremony and receive a gift bag from Whataburger and a large commemorative poster with their college information.
“It is important for our students to have choices and know that their hard work and dedication in investing in themselves do not go unnoticed,” Principal Irene Talamantes said. “I believe this builds confidence in our students, and it gives them the leverage they need to achieve their goals beyond high school.”

Sanchez, quien se dirige a Texas A&M University College Station para estudiar ciencias forenses y de investigación, ya ha visto que sus esfuerzos han rendido frutos.
“Me ofrecieron una beca completa así que es bueno no tener que preocuparme por dinero”, dijo Sanchez.
Arturo Martinez y Sheryl Lew, los dos consejeros universitarios de la escuela crearon el programa en la primavera de 2019 para reconocer la ardua labor de los estudiantes de último año de preparatoria al seleccionar las mejores ofertas de becas.
En el primer año del programa, tuvieron a seis Estudiantes con Un Millón de Dólares en ofertas. El programa creció, incluso durante la pandemia de COVID-19, a ocho estudiantes en 2020, 10 en 2021, y este año tuvieron 19.
Para lograr $1 millón de dólares en ofertas, los estudiantes están usando exenciones de tarifas para solicitar ingreso a varias universidades y también están solicitando a becas privadas como las que se ofrecen a través de la fundación de Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation.
“Tenemos una cultura que incentiva la educación universitaria y este reconocimiento ha ayudado a nuestros estudiantes a solicitar ingreso a más universidades”, dijo Martinez. “Nuestros estudiantes tienen muchas opciones en cuanto a lo que pueden conseguir en Texas y fuera del estado. Como una escuela del Bachillerato Internacional, queremos animar a todos nuestros estudiantes a que consideren sus universidades ‘probables’, ‘meta’ o ‘de preferencia’”.
De los 19 Estudiantes con Un Millón de Dólares en ofertas, 16 son parte de la primera generación de sus familias en ir a la universidad. Sin poder depender de las experiencias de los miembros de sus familias, la guía de los consejeros universitarios ha sido fundamental para el proceso de solicitud, comparación y negociación.
“He tenido que hacer mucho yo sola”, dijo Amberlin Casiano. “El Sr. Martinez y la Srta. Lew me han ayudado con todo. Mi mamá me inspiró a llegar hasta este punto, pero ella no sabía cómo funciona ApplyTexas o el proceso de solicitud de ingreso para UT”.
Casiano se dirige a la University of Texas at Austin para estudiar enfermería y tiene más de suficiente en becas para pagar su primer año completamente y se pueden renovar por hasta cuatro años.
Eso se debe celebrar. Los estudiantes en este grupo selecto participarán en una ceremonia especial de reconocimiento y recibirán una bolsa de regalo de Whataburger junto con un póster conmemorativo grande con la información de su universidad.
“Es importante que nuestros estudiantes tengan opciones y que sepan que su ardua labor y dedicación que están invirtiendo en sí mismos no pasan desapercibidos”, dijo la Directora Irene Talamantes. “Siento que esto genera confianza en nuestros estudiantes y les da las ventajas que necesitan para lograr sus metas más allá de la preparatoria”.
