This week is National Substitute Appreciation Week, and San Antonio ISD has some of the best substitute teachers.

 

We traveled around the district to talk to some of our subs to find out what brought them to pursue substitute teaching and what they love about the job. Here are some of their stories. 

 

Los maestros sustitutos apoyan el éxito de los estudiantes

 

 Esta semana es la Semana Nacional de Reconocimiento para Maestros Sustitutos, y San Antonio ISD tiene algunos de los mejores maestros sustitutos.

 

Hablamos con algunos de nuestros maestros sustitutos para averiguar qué los atrajo a este llamado y qué les encanta sobre el trabajo. Aquí están algunas de sus historias.

Barbra Figueroa is a long-term sub for a first-grade class at Cotton Academy. She retired in May 2020 from Ball Academy after 31 years in Special Education in the district and began subbing in October 2020. 

 

“It was an easy decision because I missed teaching and being around the kids,” Figueroa said. “I pride myself on making an effort to be a positive influence on those in my class. We have to be intentional and genuine when we show up to work, when we listen to the stories the kids share, and when we reassure parents that their babies are safe.” 

 

Though her previous work was with elementary students, she formed a bond with the seventh graders she taught last year. 

 

“It was a learning curve for all of us but we grew on each other,” Figueroa said. “I felt like we had come such a long way that year and those 7th graders just left a huge imprint on my heart. I have seen all of them this year. They have filtered in a few at a time to say hello and visit.”

Figueroa se jubiló en mayo de 2020 de Ball Academy después de ser maestra de Educación Especial por 31 años en el distrito, y comenzó a trabajar como maestra sustituta en octubre de 2020.

 

“Fue una decisión fácil porque extrañaba enseñar y estar con los niños”, dijo Figueroa. “Procuro esforzarme por ser una influencia positiva para los alumnos en mi clase. Tenemos que ser intencionales y auténticos cuando venimos a trabajar, cuando escuchamos las historias que comparten los niños y cuando les aseguramos a los padres que sus hijos están seguros”.

 

A pesar de que antes trabajaba con estudiantes de primaria, formó una conexión especial con algunos estudiantes de séptimo grado a quienes enseñó el año pasado.

 

“Fue un proceso de aprendizaje para todos, pero cultivamos una buena conexión”, dijo Figueroa. “Siento que crecimos mucho ese año y esos estudiantes de 7.º grado dejaron su huella en mi corazón. Los he visto a todos este año. Han venido a saludarme y a platicar”.

After retiring from Baskin Elementary, Sandra Vargas has continued to serve schools in the area the last two years. 

 

"I wanted to help support the teachers during this time of COVID,” Vargas said. “As a former teacher, I know substitutes play an important role, and it was always wonderful when you could schedule someone that was familiar with your students and campus.” 

 

Vargas has enjoyed serving in the school where she formerly worked, running into her former colleagues and students. 

 

"I’m a Pre-K teacher at heart, so I enjoy the primary grades,” she said. “They always have a great story to tell! I have subbed in upper grades too. It is great to run into my former students and see how much they have grown and progressed.”

 

Después de jubilarse de Baskin Elementary, Sandra Vargas ha continuado prestando servicio a las escuelas en el área por los últimos dos años.

 

“Quería apoyar a los maestros durante este momento de COVID”, dijo Vargas. “Como exmaestra, sé que los maestros sustitutos tienen una función importante, y era genial cuando podía programar a alguien que estaba familiarizado con los estudiantes y con la escuela”.

 

Vargas ha disfrutado prestar servicio en la escuela en la que trabajaba y poder volver a ver a sus compañeros y estudiantes.

 

“En el fondo siempre seré maestra de prekínder, así que disfruto los grados de la primaria”, dijo. “Es genial volver a ver a mis estudiantes y ver cuánto han crecido y progresado”.

There are many paths that take our substitutes to the classroom. Barbara Rodriguez came to be a substitute teacher after spending 36 years as a data clerk in the district, at campuses including Hirsch and Ruiz elementaries, Tafolla and Davis middle schools, and Fox Tech High School. 

 

“As a data clerk I was always busy,” Rodriguez said. “I really enjoyed working with the students and parents.”

 

Now in her retirement, Rodriguez has been subbing for the past year. Her husband also subs for the district. Mrs. Rodriguez frequently subs at Travis Early College High School.

 

“I still love working with the kids,” she said. “I like working with 11th and 12th graders. We want them to graduate and go to college. That’s what we’re here for.”

 

Hay muchos caminos que conducen a nuestros sustitutos al salón. Barbara Rodriguez se hizo maestra sustituta después de pasar 36 años como secretaria de datos en el distrito y en las escuelas primarias de Hirsch y Ruiz, las escuelas secundarias de Tafolla y Davis, y Fox Tech High School.

 

“Como secretaria de datos siempre estaba ocupada”, dijo Rodriguez. “Realmente disfrutaba trabajar con los estudiantes y los padres”.

 

Ahora que sea ha jubilado, Rodriguez ha estado trabajando como maestra sustituta por un año. Su esposo también es maestro sustituto con el distrito. La Sra. Rodriguez a menudo trabaja en Travis Early College High School.

 

“Aún me encanta trabajar con los niños”, dijo ella. “Me gusta trabajar con los estudiantes de los grados 11 y 12. Queremos que se gradúen y vayan a la universidad. Para eso estamos aquí”.

Richard Beltran continues to substitute teach for San Antonio ISD because of his sheer love of teaching. After working for the district for 25 years at Madison, Huppertz, and Baskin elementary schools, Beltran retired and has now been subbing for Maverick and Baskin. 

 

“My entire career was working with special needs students,” Beltran said. “I feel that I give students the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

 

For the last 18 months, Beltran has subbed as a GEC teacher for both Maverick, his current placement, and Baskin, allowing him to continue to work in the neighborhoods he has served for decades.

 

“The people here are awesome,” Beltran said. “They’ve accepted me and appreciate my experience.”

 

Richard Beltran continúa trabajando como maestro sustituto para San Antonio ISD debido a su amor por la enseñanza. Después de trabajar para el distrito por 25 años en las escuelas primarias de Madison, Huppertz y Baskin, Beltran se ha jubilado y ahora sirve como maestro sustituto en Maverick y Baskin.

 

“Durante toda mi carrera trabajé con estudiantes de necesidades especiales”, dijo Beltran. “Siento que les ofrezco la oportunidad a los estudiantes de lograr su potencial completo”.

 

Por los últimos 18 meses, Beltran ha sido el maestro sustituto de GEC para Maverick, que es donde se encuentra ahora, y Baskin, lo cual le permite seguir trabajando en los vecindarios a los que ha prestado servicio por décadas.

 

“Las personas aquí son geniales”, dijo Beltran. “Me han aceptado y aprecian mi experiencia”.

Susan Hale taught for the district for 12 years back in the 1990s. 

 

“I was familiar with SAISD and felt very comfortable here,” Hale said. “The best part about being a substitute is the joy in helping students learn. And I have found they do appreciate help.”

 

One of Hale’s favorite stops is Baskin Elementary, where her daughter works.

 

“Baskin is a happy school and has wonderful teachers and staff,” Hale said. “They are very welcoming to kids, parents, visitors, and subs.”

“Estaba familiarizada con SAISD y me sentía muy cómoda aquí”, dijo Hale. “La mejor parte de ser una sustituta es el gozo de ayudar a los estudiantes a aprender. Y me he visto que ellos aprecian la ayuda”.

 

A Hale le encanta trabajar en Baskin Elementary, porque es donde trabaja su hija.

 

“Baskin es una escuela feliz y tiene maestros y personal maravillosos”, dijo Hale. “Les dan la bienvenida a los niños, padres, visitantes y maestros sustitutos”.
