Oct. 2 is National Custodian Appreciation Day, and we could not be more thankful for our custodial staff. They are on the front lines of student safety, making sure campuses are secure and clean to allow our teachers to teach and our students to learn. 

We visited with a few of our campus custodians to learn about their work and what they love about their jobs.

El 2 de oct. es el Día Nacional de Reconocimiento de Conserjes, y no podríamos estar más agradecidos por nuestro personal de mantenimiento. Ellos están en las primeras líneas de la seguridad estudiantil ya que se encargan de que las escuelas estén seguras y limpias para permitir que nuestros maestros enseñen y nuestros estudiantes aprendan. 

Platicamos con algunos de nuestros conserjes para aprender sobre sus tareas de todos los días y qué les gusta más sobre su trabajo.

Art Godines has seen a lot of changes at Fenwick Academy. In his 30 years on the campus, the head custodian has seen a transition from elementary to academy with middle school grades. He’s seen the instruction move from 16 portables to brand new buildings. He watched the construction of Building C from the ground up.

“It feels good to know that when people from the outside come in to repair something or to look for something, they always look for me because I know where everything’s at,” Godines said. “It’s like I don’t need a blueprint.”

He’s met a lot of teachers, students, and parents. He’s seen those students come back around with their own children, parents themselves. 

“The years have gone by quick,” he said. “I come across some of the kids that were here in the past, and they already have their own families."

He got his first computer 10 years into the job. Before that, all the work orders were on paper. Day to day, Mr. Godines says he likes the structure of the job, knowing what’s coming next, and being able to start a task and see it through working alongside his team.

“I take pride in doing the work that I do — having a team and working together,” Godines said. “To me, the most important thing is just knowing that what I was doing here was not only for me, but for the kids, and for the parents, and everybody else.”

Art Godines ha presenciado muchos cambios en Fenwick Academy. En los 30 años que lleva trabajando en la escuela, el conserje encargado ha visto una transición de primaria a academia con grados de secundaria. Ha visto el cambio de 16 salones portátiles a edificios nuevos. Presenció la construcción del Edificio C desde un principio.

“Se siente bien saber que cuando las personas vienen para reparar o buscar algo, siempre me buscan a mí porque yo sé dónde está todo”, dijo Godines. “No necesito un plano”.

Ha conocido a muchos maestros, estudiantes y padres. Ha visto a esos estudiantes regresar con sus propios hijos cuando llegan a ser padres. 

“Los años han pasado rápido”, dijo. “A veces me encuentro con estudiantes que asistieron a esta escuela y ya tienen sus propias familias".

Recibió su primera computadora 10 años después de que empezó a trabajar aquí. Antes de eso, todas las órdenes de trabajo se hacían a mano. El Sr. Godines indica que le gusta la estructura del trabajo, siempre sabe qué sigue y puede comenzar una tarea y terminarla con la ayuda de su equipo.

“Es un orgullo poder hacer este trabajo, el tener un equipo y poder trabajar juntos”, dijo Godines. “Para mí lo más importante es saber que lo que hago aquí no es solo para mí, sino para los niños, para los padres y para todos los demás”.

Nora Mercado is the Head Custodian at Lanier High School. She has been with San Antonio ISD for over 15 years, the last four of which have been at Lanier. 

What keeps her going is just the dedication she has and passion for the district, the students, and the community. 

“I love SAISD,” Mercado said. “Just being around students — serving them and our community and working with our awesome staff and teachers. That is my passion.”

When she looks around the campus, she admires the work of her team.

“I feel very proud to have the team that I have right now,” Mercado said. “They are very hard working and have the same passion to do everything for our students and the community here.”

Nora Mercado es la Conserje Encargada en Lanier High School. Ella ha trabajado con San Antonio ISD por más de 15 años y los últimos cuatro ha estado en Lanier.

Lo que la motiva es la dedicación y la pasión que tiene por el distrito, los estudiantes y la comunidad.

“Amo a SAISD”, dijo Mercado. “El estar entre los estudiantes — el poder prestarles servicio a ellos y nuestra comunidad y poder trabajar con nuestro personal y nuestros maestros increíbles. Esa es mi pasión”.

Cuando ve la escuela, admira el trabajo de su equipo.

“Estoy muy orgullosa de tener el equipo que tengo ahora”, dijo Mercado. “Trabajan arduamente y tienen la misma pasión por nuestros estudiantes y nuestra comunidad aquí”.

As a floating head custodian, Jason Ramos gets to see a lot of the district. 

Helping out during vacancies or leave, he could be at a campus for a few days, weeks, or months, making sure the campus is supported. He’s served seven campuses so far in the two years he’s had the position.

“It’s always something different,” Ramos said. “I know a lot of people. I see teachers that were other campuses before. It’s something different every day. I come and do what I’m supposed to do and then I’m on to my next journey.”

Ramos is in his 28th year with the district, serving at Burbank High School, Highland Hills Elementary, and Schenck Elementary, before taking the floating position. When he gets to a campus, he takes an inventory of everything, submitting any work orders he can see are needed.

“Since I’ve been doing this so long, I just walk around, and if I see something, I make a work order,” Ramos said. “My goal is to find the problem before the principal does.”

His time at his current assignment at Collins Garden Elementary is coming to a close, and he’s been showered with appreciation from students and staff alike, receiving cards and a special banner.

“You have to love what you do to do this, just like a teacher,” Ramos said. “We’re going to have our bad days, but when that little kid comes up to you and says, ‘Thank you, Mr. Ramos for cleaning our school,’ that’s what you do it for.”

Como un conserje encargado de varias escuelas, Jason Ramos ve gran parte del distrito. 

Ya que ayuda cuando hay vacantes o ausencias laborales, puede estar en una escuela por algunos días, algunas semanas o hasta mesas, y se asegura de que la escuela reciba apoyo. Ha prestado servicio en siete escuelas en los dos años que lleva en este puesto.

“Siempre es algo diferente”, dijo Ramos. “Conozco a muchas personas. Veo a maestros o maestras que antes estaban en otras escuelas. Es algo diferente todos los días. Llego, hago lo que tengo que hacer y luego estoy listo para mi siguiente asignación”.

Ramos lleva 28 años trabajando con el distrito y ha trabajado en Burbank High School, Highland Hills Elementary y Schenck Elementary antes de comenzar su puesto actual. Cuando llega a una escuela, él toma un inventario de todo y genera órdenes de trabajo que considera necesarias.

“Como llevo tanto tiempo haciendo esto, solo hago una inspección y si veo algo, genero una orden de trabajo”, dijo Ramos. “Mi meta es encontrar el problema antes que el director o la directora lo haga”.

Su asignación actual en Collins Garden Elementary está por terminar, y tanto los estudiantes como los maestros le han mostrado su aprecio al darle tarjetas y una pancarta especial.

“Se necesita tener un amor por lo que uno hace, igual que los maestros”, dijo Ramos. “Habrá días difíciles, pero cuando un niño se acerca y dice: ‘Gracias por limpiar nuestra escuela, Sr. Ramos’, esa es la razón por la que lo hacemos”.

Gina Barraza is a custodian at Quincy Central Office building. She’s been with the district for five years, moving to Quincy when the staff made the move from Lavaca. 

She’s worked for other school districts, but she said she was immediately struck by how kind the staff was in San Antonio ISD.

“You feel very welcome here,” Barraza said. “Since they interviewed me the first time, the managers made me feel very welcome. They trained me for the whole week. I started working and everybody says hi, they are very cheerful. I had never worked in a place where I feel welcome like here in Central Office."

Gina Barraza es conserje en las Oficinas Centrales ubicadas en Quincy. Ella lleva cinco años con el distrito y vino a las oficinas de Quincy cuando el personal se mudó de Lavaca. 

Ella ha trabajado para otros distritos escolares, pero dice que inmediatamente notó lo amable que era el personal en San Antonio ISD.

“Uno se siente muy acogido aquí”, dijo Barraza. “Desde que me entrevistaron la primera vez, los gerentes me hicieron sentir muy acogida. Me capacitaron por toda la semana. Desde que comencé a trabajar, todos me saludan. Nunca había trabajado en un lugar en el que me sienta tan acogida como en la Oficina Central".

Adam Casanova has been on the night shift at Hot Wells Middle School for the last five years.

The retired city employee said he loves his coworkers and being part of the team. 

“We get along real good,” Casanova said. “Communication is real good with us. And we have a great head custodian. She stays and goes out of her way. A lot of this stuff she doesn’t have to. She does a lot for us, she really does.”

Working 2:30-11 p.m., Casanova cleans the second floor, 18 classroom spaces. He listens to music to keep his pace. His favorite part: buffing the floors.

“I love getting on that machine and buffing my floors,” Casanova said. “At the end you can see your results. I like that. And that’s the first thing people see when they walk in.”

Adam Casanova ha tenido el turno vespertino en Hot Wells Middle School por cinco años.

Él es un empleado jubilado de la ciudad e indica que quiere mucho a sus compañeros y le encanta ser parte del equipo. 

“Nos llevamos muy bien”, dijo Casanova. “Tenemos muy buena comunicación. Y tenemos una excelente conserje encargada. Ella se queda y va más allá de sus deberes. Hace muchas cosas que no tiene que hacer. Y realmente hace mucho por nosotros”.

Casanova trabaja de 2:30 a 11 p.m. y limpia 18 salones en el segundo piso. Escucha música para mantener un buen ritmo. Su parte preferida es pulir los pisos.

“Me encanta usar esa máquina y pulir los pisos”, dijo Casanova. “Al final se pueden ver los resultados. Eso me gusta. Y es lo primero que ven las personas cuando llegan”.

Alejandro Arias likes being the eyes and ears of his campus.

The 19-year San Antonio ISD veteran has spent the last two years at Lamar Elementary as head custodian, where he prides himself in being prepared. He starts his day with his daily rounds outside for security purposes, before checking in with his porter to make sure the morning started smoothly and the administration about any events for the day. It’s a collaborative aspect that he really enjoys about the job.

“Being a head custodian is something I had wanted for many years,” Arias said. “And now I’m here and it’s great. It's a privilege to just be there for a lot of people, communicate and collaborate with a lot of different maintenance and contract workers that come in.”

Working with his team of three custodians, Arias makes sure that the school is clean and safe for teachers to teach and students to learn. 

“We just come to work to serve,” Arias said. “We’re here to serve the children.  We’re here to serve the teachers and administration team. We’re here to serve the community. We come to serve and we leave here knowing we did a job well done.”

Él lleva 19 años trabajando con San Antonio ISD, ha estado en Lamar Elementary los últimos dos como conserje encargado y se enorgullece de estar preparado. Comienza su día con las rondas diarias afuera por motivos de seguridad, antes de platicar con su portero para asegurarse de que la mañana haya estado bien y con la administración sobre cualquier evento para ese día. Es un aspecto colaborativo del trabajo que realmente disfruta.

“He querido ser un conserje encargado por muchos años”, dijo Arias. “Lo he logrado y es genial. Es un privilegio poder ayudar a muchas personas, y poder comunicarme y colaborar con muchos empleados distintos de mantenimiento y contratistas que vienen aquí”.

Junto con su equipo de tres conserjes, Arias se encarga de que la escuela esté limpia y segura para que los maestros enseñen y los estudiantes aprendan. 

“Venimos al trabajo para prestar servicio”, dijo Arias. “Estamos aquí para prestar servicio a los niños.  Estamos aquí para prestar servicio a los maestros y al equipo administrativo. Estamos aquí para prestar servicio a la comunidad. Venimos a prestar servicio y regresamos a casa sabiendo que hicimos un buen trabajo”.
