A group of students in the Burbank High School agriculture program are now set to show pigs at the Bexar County Livestock Show after their dual credit professor Steve Chumbley at Palo Alto College arranged for some sponsors for show animals for the students.
Chumbley said he asked the students if they had ever shown animals, but the rising costs of livestock, feed and medicine prevented them from participating in competition.
“I asked the kids, ‘If I could get someone to help, would you do it?’ and three of them said yes,” Chumbley said.
So Chumbley said he got some donors together and on Oct. 13, he and his son Ty Chumbley, the Agriculture Coordinator at Palo Alto, rolled up to the Burbank Agriculture Barn with four young pigs.
The students’ faces lit up with joy as the pigs walked down the trailer ramp.
“It means a lot,” junior Tristan Ortega said. “We’re extremely grateful that they can help us and help this dream come true for us.”

Un grupo de estudiantes en el programa de agricultura de Burbank High School presentarán cerdos en el Show de Ganadería del Condado de Bexar ya que su profesor de doble créditoen palo Alto College, Steve Chumbley, hizo los arreglos de encontrar patrocinadores para conseguir los animales que presentarán los estudiantes.
Chumbley dijo que les preguntó a los estudiantes si antes habían presentado animales, pero los costos crecientes del ganado, del pienso y de la medicina impidieron que participaran en el concurso.
“Les pregunté a los niños: ‘Si puedo conseguir a alguien que ayude, ¿lo harían?’, y tres dijeron que sí”, dijo Chumbley.
Así que Chumbley consiguió algunos donantes y el 13 de oct. él y su hijo Ty Chumbley, el Coordinador de Agricultura en Palo Alto, llegaron al Establo de Agricultura de Burbank con cuatro cerdos jóvenes.
Los rostros de los estudiantes se iluminaron de felicidad cuando vieron a los cerdos salir del camión.
“Significa mucho”, dijo el estudiante de tercer año de preparatoria Tristan Ortega. “Estamos muy agradecidos de que nos pueden ayudar a que este sueño se haga realidad para nosotros”.
