Hawthorne fifth grade teacher Rachel Diaz-Pacheco hosted a book tasting for her students. 

"I noticed my students were always reading books within the same genre and often written by the same authors,” Diaz Pacheco said. “Book tastings provide an opportunity for them to sample a variety of books which they otherwise may not have considered reading. In addition to exposing them to different genres and authors, this experience allows them to practice choosing ‘just right books’ that will help grow them as readers.”

Librarian Bonnye Cavazos helped gather books with strong character development, including a variety of fiction genres at varying reading levels.  

For the big day, Diaz-Pacheco turned her classroom into a cafe with green tablecloths, place mats, centerpieces and printed menus to record book choices. Each table displayed an anchor chart with guidelines for finding "good fit" books and a stack of books to taste.  

She even provided some delicious mini conchas and juices for the kids to enjoy.

"The following day, I had students tell me they had already read several chapters, and that they couldn't put their book down,” Diaz-Pacheco said.

“Noté que mis estudiantes siempre leían libros del mismo género y a menudo del mismo autor”, dijo Diaz-Pacheco. “Las degustaciones de libros proporcionan una oportunidad para que ellos prueben una variedad de libros que tal vez no hubieran considerado leer. Además de exponerlos a diferentes géneros y autores, esta experiencia les permite practicar elegir los ‘libros indicados’ que los ayudarán a crecer como lectores”.

La bibliotecaria Bonnye Cavazos ayudó a recopilar libros con un fuerte desarrollo de personajes, incluso una variedad de géneros de ficción, en distintos niveles de lectura. 

Para el gran día, Diaz-Pacheco convirtió su salón en un café con manteles verdes, manteles individuales, centros de mesa y menús para registrar las elecciones de libros. Cada mesa contaba con una tabla de anclaje con directrices para encontrar libros de “buen ajuste” y una selección de libros para probar.

Incluso ofreció miniconchas deliciosas y jugo para que los niños disfrutaran.

“Al siguiente día, los estudiantes me contaron que ya habían leído varios capítulos y que no podían dejar de leer su libro”, dijo Diaz-Pacheco.
