This election day, adults weren't the only ones making important decisions.
Students of all grade levels across San Antonio ISD took to their own polls Nov. 8 — in a district-wide mock voting project via Google form — to settle some big issues.
It was the culmination of a two-and-a-half-week optional social studies unit which taught students about the election process while giving them a chance to learn more about some important historic figures.
"We wanted to give students the opportunity to experience the process of voting while learning about and analyzing the contributions of some significant historical figures that have influenced our nation and community,” Patrick Pyle, director of social studies, said.
The unit kicked off with information about elections and how to register to vote.
“The students really enjoyed the voting lessons,” Villanka Stroud, social studies department chair at Poe Middle School, said. “The students learned about the process of getting registered to vote, and we looked at a great video of how the new Texas voting machines work. Many students were excited and look forward to getting registered once they are eligible.”
For the election, elementary grade level researched different historical figures that are included in the TEKS:
• K-2: Ruby Bridges, Irma Rangel, Thurgood Marshall, Amelia Earhart and Martin Luther King, Jr.
• 3-5: César Chávez, Susan B. Anthony, Héctor P. Garcia, Barbara Jordan and Neil Armstrong
The students then spent time “campaigning,” completing projects and assignments before the big vote, when they had to decide “Who is the most interesting person?”
“The other fifth grade teacher and I used the elections lessons with our students,” Huppertz fifth grade teacher Sherryl Lopez said. “I do believe they enjoyed it, as they were able to learn about important figures that have had a major impact on our society and government.”
Secondary grade levels learned about presidents that are in the TEKS for their grade levels and voted on which one they thought was the most historically significant:
• 6-8: George Washington, James Madison, Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson
• 9-12: Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama
Nearly 1200 students took part in the election process across the district, and when the results were tallied, the big winners were: Martin Luther King, Jr., Neil Armstrong, Abraham Lincoln, and Barack Obama.
“So far, some of the students were surprised at the results, but most believed that Abraham Lincoln would take the win,” Stroud said.

Fue la culminación de una unidad opcional de dos semanas y media para estudios sociales que les enseñó a los estudiantes sobre el proceso de las elecciones y les dio la oportunidad de aprender más sobre algunas figuras históricas importantes.
"Queríamos darles a los estudiantes la oportunidad de experimentar el proceso de votar mientras aprenden y analizan las aportaciones de algunas figuras históricas importantes que han influenciado nuestra nación y nuestra comunidad”, dijo Patrick Pyle, director de estudios sociales.
La unidad comenzó con información sobre las elecciones y cómo inscribirse para votar.
“Los estudiantes realmente disfrutaron las lecciones sobre la votación”, dijo Villanka Stroud, directora del departamento de estudios sociales en Poe Middle School. “Los estudiantes aprendieron sobre el proceso de inscribirse para votar y vimos un gran video sobre cómo funcionan las nuevas máquinas para votar de Texas. Los estudiantes pasaron tiempo “haciendo campaña”, completado proyectos y tareas antes del voto mediante el cual elegirían “¿Quién es la persona más interesante?”.
“La otra maestra de quinto grado y yo usamos las lecciones de elecciones con nuestros estudiantes”, dijo Sherryl Lopez, maestra de quinto grado de Huppertz. “Siento que lo disfrutaron y pudieron aprender sobre personas importantes que han tenido un impacto significativo en nuestra sociedad y nuestro gobierno”.
Los niveles de secundaria y preparatoria aprendieron sobre los presidentes que están en los TEKS para sus niveles de grado y votaron por cuál pensaron que era el más importante en la historia:

Casi 1200 estudiantes participaron en el proceso de las elecciones del distrito, y cuando los resultaros se calcularon, los ganadores fueron los siguientes: Martin Luther King, Jr., Neil Armstrong, Abraham Lincoln y Barack Obama.
“Algunos de los estudiantes se sorprendieron con los resultados, pero la mayoría creía que Abraham Lincoln ganaría”, dijo Stroud.
