November is Family Engagement Month, and a grant from Frito-Lay and the LULAC National Education Service Center in San Antonio (LNESC) has been helping both San Antonio ISD schools connect with parents and helping those parents connect with their children.
The programming funded by the grant was designed to empower parents by giving them the technical tools and knowledge they need to support their students, said Orlando Blancas, Director of the San Antonio branch of the LNESC.
“The grant pays for teachers at our schools to lead cohorts of parents in learning the computer skills needed to follow their children’s progress, keep track of lessons and homework, take care of needed registration and enrollment paperwork and correspond with teachers and administrators,” said Blancas. “Many of the parents will also receive computers.”
In October, Harris Middle School and Woodlawn Academy began welcoming cohorts of 10 parents at a time to participate in the training.
“But they weren’t just given web addresses,” said Cynthia Luna, counselor at Harris Middle School. “They have had someone on-hand to walk with them through the password-protected, multiple-clicking pathways to their children’s educational information and school contacts.”
The sessions empowered families as they worked through the Frontline interface.
“The information sharing was great, and our parents have found new confidence and connections to their children, but we’ve seen more than that,” said Luis De La Garza, Head of School at Woodlawn Academy.
Most of the parents have been able to bring their spouses and children and they have all had time to sit and eat dinner together and get to know each other, he said.
“Bringing our families together and giving them the opportunity to share experiences and recognize the things they have in common helps families build connections to each other and the campus,” said De La Garza. “It strengthens the campus community.”
Belinda Hinojosa, a parent from Woodlawn Academy, was excited about all the useful information she received at the sessions.
“They showed us that there actually are a lot of resources out there,” said Hinojosa.
The hands-on experience was also a help to parents who may not have experience with technology.
“It made me feel more comfortable,” Hinojosa said. “This was a great community to be a part of.”
Harris Middle School and Woodlawn Academy are both accredited International Baccalaureate World Schools with Harris offering the International Baccalaureate’s Middle Years Programme and Woodlawn Academy offering the Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes. These frameworks of learning encourage all make learning a lifelong pursuit.
“Our parents have set a great example here for our students, showing them how open they are to learning new technology and meeting new people,” De La Garza said.

Noviembre es el Mes de Participación Familiar, y una subvención por parte de Frito-Lay y el LULAC National Education Service Center en San Antonio (LNESC) ha estado ayudando a las escuelas de San Antonio ISD a conectar con los padres y a esos padres a conectar con sus hijos.
La programación fundada por la subvención fue diseñada para facultar a los padres al darles las herramientas técnicas y el conocimiento que necesitan para apoyar a sus estudiantes, dijo Orlando Blancas, director de la división de LNESC en San Antonio.
“La subvención paga para que los maestros en nuestras escuelas dirijan a grupos de padres en su aprendizaje de las habilidades de computación que necesitan para llevar un seguimiento del progreso de sus hijos, para llevar un control de las lecciones y tarea, para que completen el papeleo de inscripción y matriculación, y para que se comuniquen con los maestros y administradores”, dijo Blancas. “Muchos de los padres también recibirán computadoras”.
En octubre, Harris Middle School y Woodlawn Academy comenzó a recibir a grupos de 10 padres a la vez para participar en la capacitación.
“Pero no solo recibieron los sitios web”, dijo Cynthia Luna, consejera de Harris Middle School. “Han tenido a alguien a la mano que los ayuda con las contraseñas y la navegación para llegar a la información de educación de sus hijos y los contactos escolares”.
Las sesiones facultaron a las familias a medida que navegaron la interfaz de Frontline.
“La divulgación de información fue genial, y nuestros padres han desarrollado un nuevo nivel de confianza y conexiones con sus hijos, pero hemos presenciado más que eso”, dijo Luis De La Garza, Director de la Escuela en Woodlawn Academy.
Él indica que la mayoría de los padres han podido traer a sus cónyuges e hijos y han podido sentarse y cenar juntos y llegar a conocerse.
“El unir a nuestras familias y darles la oportunidad de compartir experiencias y reconocer las cosas que tienen en común les ayuda a desarrollar conexiones entre sí y con la escuela”, dijo De La Garza. “Fortalece a la comunidad escolar”.
Belinda Hinojosa, una madre de familia de Woodlawn Academy, estaba emocionada por toda la información útil que recibió en las sesiones.
“Nos mostraron que de hecho hay muchos recursos disponibles”, dijo Hinojosa.
La práctica también ayudó a los padres que tal vez no tienen experiencia con la tecnología.
“Me hizo sentir más cómoda”, dijo Hinojosa. “Esta fue una gran comunidad de la cual pude formar parte”.
Tanto Harris Middle School como Woodlawn Academy son Colegios del Mundo del Bachillerato Internacional autorizados; Harris ofrece el Programa de los Años Intermedios del Bachillerato Internacional y Woodlawn Academy ofrece los Programas de la Escuela Primaria y de los Años Intermedios. Estos marcos de aprendizaje animan a todos a que hagan del aprendizaje una meta de por vida.
“Nuestros padres han establecido un excelente ejemplo para nuestros estudiantes al mostrarles lo dispuestos que están a aprender nueva tecnología y a conocer a nuevas personas”, dijo De La Garza.
