This week for Hour of Code, students in San Antonio ISD schools joined millions around the world celebrating Computer Science Education Week, which takes place every year in December.
This year, SAISD K-5 STEM challenged its campuses to have every student participate in at least one hour of code.
On the district’s Hour of Code website, educators could choose from different computer science activities and log their involvement throughout the week. Campuses could use the digital materials on the web site, work with Ed Tech Instructional Specialists to design activities for their students, or come up with their own activities. In addition to the digital learning activities the district provided, Ed Tech also shared ideas for unplugged coding activities in the classroom.
At Graebner Elementary, they used the digital activities on the Hour of Code website. Favorites were Code Monkey Jr., Dance Party, and Minecraft.
“The kids are really loving it,” digital teacher librarian Amanda Vasquez said. “They are using the activities in the classrooms too.”
Vasquez said she connected coding to the interests of the video game enthusiasts at the school.
“If you ever want to build your own video games, you need to know how to code,” she told them.
At Woodlawn Academy on Wednesday, students rotated through three stations — DASH & DOT Robots, Binary Coding (unplugged activity), and the coding websites that the district provided.
“Coding is a 21st century digital skill that will be beneficial for our students in the future in the business sector,” Nyree Cavazos, the school’s digital teacher librarian, said. “So, I'm excited that students get to create technology instead of just being a user and have fun while doing it.”
On Friday at Mission Academy, kindergarten and first-grade students used mats to build commands and had fun with Code Monkey Jr.
When the week was over, more than 4,600 SAISD students logged 12,931 hours on the Hour of Code website. The SAISD Foundation generously awarded campuses with the most participation relative to their enrollment with $500 STEM grants. The winners were: Douglass Elementary, Elementary Category, with 562 hours; Hawthorne Academy, Middle Schools and Academies Category, with 1,404 hours; and Jefferson High School, High School Category, with 392 hours.
