It doesn’t take much time at Maverick Elementary School to meet the puppets. Nicole is the mischievous one. Dolly is the shy one, who takes care of Roberto, a rooster. Pedro needs help with self-esteem. They go on field trips. The students spot them weekly in counseling guidance lessons. 

They are part of the fabric of Maverick, and so is the voice behind them.

Jeanette Zuniga has been the counselor at Maverick for the last 17 years, and the puppets have been with her every step of the way. 

“I am who I am because of them,” Zuniga said. “The kids love it. They feel like they’re alive. I bring them to life and they talk to them.”

Zuniga, who is known around campus for her boisterous voice, her love of music and dancing, and crazy hats, was just honored as one of 12 SA Lights, at a gala sponsored by the San Antonio Express-News Nov. 16.

The Express-News has created the SA Lights program in 2021 to shine a light on amazing people, recognize their efforts, and inspire more people to greatness. This year they were seeking “individuals that build foundations, motivate others, and put forth time and energy to keep San Antonio strong.”

When speech pathologist April Duvall heard what the Express-News was looking for, Zuniga was one of the first people who came to mind. 

“I haven’t seen a counselor put so much into building a community and do so many things for the kids,” Duvall said. “The way that the kids walk in in the morning, you just notice. It’s just so welcoming, like it’s a special event just coming in.”

Zuniga likes to station herself at the door with music playing. The school plays music as the students enter the building each day and again to send them home for the weekend. 

“On Fridays when they go home, we put music on, and on the announcements, we always say ‘thank you so much for coming to school this week and we want to wish you a great weekend,’” Zuniga said. “We send them off dancing as well. I love it.”

After the disruption caused by COVID-19, Zuniga says she is fortunate to be able to spend the majority of time in guidance. With the support of campus leadership, she is able to meet with all classes at Maverick for 30 minutes per week. 

"Elementary counselors are vital to the climate and operation of the campus,” principal Leila Garza said. “They are educators, skill-builders, and confidants, there for students to interact with and thrive. Our students need various forms of direct support and having a guidance class weekly provides this resource regularly.”

That’s where the puppets come in. Zuniga uses them to create scenarios that illustrate the pillars of character in the district’s guidance curriculum. She uses role play to help students see what the pillars look and sound like, and thanks to the priorities of the Maverick administration, she gets to reinforce these concepts weekly.

“My main thing is seeing the kids every single week,” Zuniga. “That is so important, and I love it because my time is where it needs to be, with the kids. I’m very lucky. I try to do a lot in those 30 minutes, but I want them, when they leave my class, to make sure that they learned something, that I touched their hearts somehow."

As part of the SA Lights award, in May, the Express-News sent a reporter and photographer to Maverick to follow Zuniga for a day to create a story about her. 

Zuniga thought that was it. The gala, she said, was a complete surprise. It was there she learned she received one of only 12 awards of more than 275 nominations, and she was the only SA Light honoree in the education field. The event, she said, was so inspirational, with a catered meal, guest speakers, and even fireworks. 

“How they made us all feel, it was beautiful,” Zuniga said. “That makes me want to do much more, because that was awesome.”

No se toma mucho tiempo conocer a los muñecos de Maverick Elementary School. Nicole es la traviesa. Dolly es tímida y cuida a Roberto, un gallo. Pedro necesita ayuda con la autoestima. Ellos van a las excursiones. Los estudiantes los ven cada semana en las lecciones de orientación escolar.

Ellos son parte de Maverick, al igual que la voz detrás del escenario.

Jeanette Zuniga ha sido la consejera en Maverick por los últimos 17 años, y los muñecos han estado con ella durante cada paso.

“Yo soy quien soy gracias a ellos”, dijo Zuniga. “A los niños les encanta. Sienten como si estuvieran vivos. Logro que cobren vida y hablan con ellos”.

Zuniga, quien es conocida en la escuela por su gran voz, su amor por la música y el baile, y sus sombreros divertidos, acaba de ser honrada con uno de 12 premios de SA Lights, una gala patrocinada por San Antonio Express-News el 16 de nov.

Express-News creó el programa de SA Lights en 2021 para destacar a personas increíbles, reconocer su esfuerzo e inspirar a más personas a la excelencia. Este año buscaban a “personas que edifican cimientos, motivan a los demás y dan de su tiempo y energía para mantener a San Antonio fuerte”.

Cuando April Duvall, patóloga de lenguaje, se enteró de lo que buscaba Express-News, Zuniga fue una de las primeras personas en las que pensó.

“No he visto a una consejera o consejero esforzarse tanto para edificar a una comunidad y hacer tanto por los niños”, dijo Duvall. “La forma en la que los niños llegan en la mañana, uno se da cuenta. Es tan acogedor, como si venir a la escuela fuera un evento especial”.

A Zuniga le gusta pararse junto a la puerta con música. La escuela toca música a medida que los estudiantes entran al edificio cada día y de nuevo a la salida.

“Los viernes cuando van a casa, ponemos música y en los anuncios siempre decimos: ‘gracias por venir a la escuela esta semana, les deseamos un gran fin de semana’”, dijo Zuniga. “Todos se ponen a bailar. Me encanta”.

Después de la interrupción causado por COVID-19, Zuniga dice que es afortunada de poder pasar la mayoría del tiempo con la orientación. Con el apoyo del liderazgo escolar, ella puede reunirse con todas las clases de Maverick por 30 minutos a la semana.

"Los consejeros de primaria son esenciales para el ambiente y la operación de la escuela”, dijo la directora Leila Garza. “Son educadores, ayudan a desarrollar las habilidades y son confidentes con los que los estudiantes pueden interactuar y quienes los ayudan a prosperar. Nuestros estudiantes necesitan distintas formas de apoyo directo y el tener la clase de orientación semanal proporciona este recurso de forma regular”.

Allí es donde se emplean los muñecos. Zuniga los utiliza para crear situaciones que ilustran los pilares de carácter y el currículo de orientación del distrito. Ella utiliza la actuación para ayudar a los estudiantes a ver cómo lucen y suenan los pilares, y gracias a las prioridades de la administración de Maverick, ella puede reforzar estos conceptos cada semana.

“Lo más importante es ver a los niños cada semana”, Zuniga. “Es tan importante y me encanta porque mi tiempo se utiliza de forma indicada, con los niños. Soy muy afortunada. Procuro hacer mucho durante esos 30 minutos, pero quiero que cuando salgan de mi clase hayan aprendido algo, quiero haber alcanzado su corazón de alguna forma".

Como parte del premio SA Lights, Express-News envió a un reportero y un fotógrafo a Maverick en mayo para acompañar a Zuniga por un día para crear una historia sobre ella.

Zuniga pensó que eso era todo. Indicó que la gala fue una sorpresa total. Fue allí donde se enteró que había recibido uno de solo 12 premios entre más de 275 nominaciones, y fue la única persona reconocida por SA Lights en el campo de la educación. Dijo que el evento fue inspirador e incluyó una cena, oradores invitados y hasta fuegos artificiales.

“La forma en la que nos hicieron sentir a todos, fue hermoso”, dijo Zuniga. “Me inspira a hacer mucho más, porque fue maravilloso”.
