Just in time for the holiday season, the SAISD Foundation has been making some big gifts to schools to help principals with campus projects.
Launched during National Principals Month in October, San Antonio ISD principals had a chance to make a video pitch for grant funding to benefit programming that could improve their entire campuses.
“We know that there are needs that are campus wide and we wanted to be able to address that,” SAISD Foundation Executive Director Judy Geelhoed said.
Right before Thanksgiving, the Foundation prize patrol made its first stop at J.T. Brackenridge Elementary, where principal Marco Morales had pitched building a STEAM Lab to house a campus newsroom.
“We’d like to allow our scholars the opportunity to practice their reading and get familiar with technology,” Morales said in his pitch.
The Foundation surprised him with an $8,000 grant on the day before Thanksgiving to fund the news station.
“We are excited about this opportunity,” Morales said. “We will be using the funds to create a ‘News Station’ that our scholars will participate in—The Eagle Express News. It will initially start as morning announcements type work and build from there.”
At Wilson Elementary, the week after Thanksgiving, the Foundation surprised Dr. Jennifer Zavala with a check for $20,000 to fund the robots and STEAM lab needed to support the school’s Cyber Time. The grant includes Sphero and BeeBot robots, LEGO Spike Essentials Sets and a Tello Drone that allow them to expand their programming.
“Our hope is to inspire our young Wilson Bears to love computer science and give them access to career paths of their choosing in cybersecurity and computer programming,” Zavala said. “It is important for us to provide the space of exploration and problem solving as early as Pre-K. We will make sure they are ready to explore and further develop their skillset in the SAISD secondary campuses who specialize in computer science pathways.”
Roxana Montes at Lamar Elementary heard about the opportunity to apply for the grant and contacted the school’s student council right away. In the course of one student council meeting, they brainstormed how they could invest in the school’s clubs, which are back for the first time this year after the strictest COVID restrictions were lifted.
Student council scripted and filmed the video pitch, and then helped come up with a budget for the supplies that would help the school’s clubs — including dance clubs, science club, garden club, and fashion club — and programs to increase morale during testing season.
At their regular meeting on Tuesday, Geelhoed, Montes and student council sponsor Cecilia Contreras had a celebration planned. They invited the students’ parents to come and watch as they surprised the students with a big check — $6,300 to fund their vision for the school.
"I was flabbergasted,” sixth grader Brandon Garces said. “It’s awesome that we got that much money, and I think it will really help.”
The Foundation received many inspiring principal grant applications, and will continue to fund them, as possible, throughout the year.
“We want to be able fund school-wide programming,” Geelhoed said. “We’re going to continue to award as many as we can.”
The SAISD Foundation is also continuing to fund classroom-based teacher grants this fall through projects posted in DonorsChoose. From eSports to classroom libraries, to date, they have supported 156 grants on 60 campuses.
Fundación sorprende a escuelas con subvenciones escolares
La Fundación de SAISD ha estado dando grandes obsequios a las escuelas para ayudar a los directores con los proyectos escolares justo a tiempo para la temporada de fiestas.

Justo antes de Acción de Gracias, la patrulla de premios de la Fundación realizó su primera parada en J.T. Brackenridge Elementary, donde el director Marco Morales había presentado una solicitud para la creación de un Laboratorio STEAM para alojar una sala de prensa escolar.
“Nos gustaría permitirles a nuestros estudiantes la oportunidad de practicar su lectura y de familiarizarse con la tecnología”, dijo Morales en su solicitud.

El consejo estudiantil creo un guion y grabó la solicitud por video, y luego ayudó a generar un presupuesto para los útiles que ayudarían a los clubs de la escuela —entre ellos los clubs de baile, ciencia, jardinería y de moda— y a los programas a aumentar la moral durante la temporada de exámenes.
Geelhoed, Montes y la patrocinadora del consejo estudiantil Cecilia Contreras, planificaron una celebración durante su reunión regular. Invitaron a los padres de los estudiantes para ayudar a sorprender a los estudiantes con un cheque — $6,300 para financiar su visión para la escuela.
"Quedé atónito”, dijo Brandon Garces, estudiante de sexto grado. “Es genial que hayamos recibido tanto dinero, creo que realmente ayudará”.
La Fundación recibió muchas solicitudes inspiradoras para las subvenciones por parte de los directores, y continuará proporcionando financiamiento según sea posible a lo largo del año.
“Queremos poder financiar la programación a nivel escolar”, dijo Geelhoed. “Vamos a continuar otorgando tantas subvenciones como podamos”.
La Fundación de SAISD también continuará financiando subvenciones para maestros este otoño a través de los proyectos publicados en DonorsChoose. Desde eSports a bibliotecas para el salón, hasta la fecha han proporcionado 156 subvenciones en 60 escuelas.
