If you ask Frances Santos for a letter of recommendation, be ready.
Be ready to submit the usual — résumé, transcript, extracurricular activities.
But there will be more. Be ready to open your heart on paper, in a mini-admission essay of sorts, to talk about the experiences you’ve had so far that made you who you are today.
Because if you ask Ms. Santos for a letter of recommendation, she’s going to do it well, and take you along on the ride.
It’s an urgent mission for Santos, the ELAR Chair at Travis Early College High School, to advocate for her students, and advocate for them well.
“As we see these students grow into the incredible adults that they will become, that they already are, we are some of the catalysts that are non-negotiables for getting them there,” Santos said. “If we don’t advocate in the form of language and really explain to these institutions that our kids can make it, and will make it, and will do great things at their campus, I don’t know who will.”
Her passion for student advocacy recently earned her a University of Chicago Outstanding Educator Award. Recipients are nominated by incoming members of the freshman class at the University, who were asked to choose an educator who played a significant role in their education, made a positive impact in their lives, and whose influence has brought them to where they are today.
Jason Gonzalez, a 2022 graduate of Travis and a Questbridge Match Scholar, in part due to one of Santos’ letters, knew just who to nominate.
"Ms. Santos is a teacher who can see a student's potential, but she knows that she cannot just guide them the entire way,” Gonzalez said. “She challenged me to work harder and reach for higher goals through my own effort. I sought her help when applying to college, and she gave me invaluable advice."
Gonzalez is one success story. His brother, Gabriel, a senior at Travis this year who just matched with Middlebury Dec. 1, is another. But there are many. Santos said she has written most of the Questbridge recommendations for the last five years, and countless others for other college admissions and scholarships.
“I’m always thrilled with this incredible joy that a person can only have when it’s excitement for someone else,” Santos said. “It’s always like that every year. It’s a wonderful feeling to be a part of the journey.”
Santos, a San Antonio native who attended St. Mary’s University, is in her 29th year with San Antonio ISD. She started at Wheatley Middle School, worked 15 years at Jefferson High School, and now the last 11 at Travis. In that time, she learned a lot about what it takes to help propel the district’s graduates to top universities.
“It's definitely an art form,” Santos said. “You have to be able to really know and understand where your students are coming from and what’s important to them so we can get the full picture of who they are and how we can help them.”
Some of that help comes in the form of letter writing, other parts in the form of essay coaching, and even school selection. In the case of Jason Gonzalez, she encouraged him to consider the University of Chicago.
“When you have a student for three years, you can kind of get a sense of what campus works for them,” Santos said. “I recommended that for him and I’m very happy he put it on his list.”
Because of that recommendation, and so much more mentorship advocacy, Santos is now cemented as one of University of Chicago’s Outstanding Educators, a distinction that goes back three decades. She received a commemorative award and certificate from the University, but the greater award to her is the light that it shines on the talent within the district.
“I was very happy that Jason was able to put that out there,” Santos said. “When something like this happens, it’s not just me, or the student. I think it really is also a way that the San Antonio [Independent] School District can continue to show the many talented voices that we have here.”

Santos dice que ha escrito la mayoría de las recomendaciones para Questbridge por los últimos cinco años, y un sinfín de recomendaciones adicionales para otras admisiones y becas universitarias.
“Siempre siento una emoción y alegría que solo es posible cuando se trata del logro de alguien más”, dijo Santos. “Es así cada año. Es un hermoso sentimiento ser parte de ese logro”.
Santos, quien nació en San Antonio y asistió a St. Mary´s University, ha trabajado con San Antonio ISD por 29 años. “Cuando se tiene a un estudiante por tres años, uno tiene un sentido de qué tipo de escuela sería un buena ajuste”, dijo Santos. “Se la recomendé y me alegra que la haya puesto en su lista”.
Gracias a esa recomendación y orientación y abogacía adicional, Santos ahora ha sido seleccionada como una Educadora Excepcional por parte de la University of Chicago, un reconocimiento que se remonta a hace tres décadas. Ella recibió un premio conmemorativo y un certificado de la Universidad, pero para ella el premio más importante es la atención que esto le da al talento dentro del distrito.
“Me alegra que Jason pudo haber destacado esto”, dijo Santos. “Cuando algo así sucede no se trata solo de mí o del estudiante. Creo que también es una forma en la que el Distrito Escolar [Independiente] de San Antonio puede continuar mostrando las muchas voces talentosas que tenemos aquí”.
