Three San Antonio ISD students were matched to the top-tier university of their choice through the 2022 QuestBridge National College Match program. Known as Match Scholarship Recipients, these three high school seniors will receive full four-year scholarships to some of the nation’s top colleges. 

 The students and their match universities are: 
* Travis Early College High School’s Gabriel Gonzalez, who matched with Middlebury College
* Young Women’s Leadership Academy’s Giselle Alcoser, who matched with Washington University in St. Louis
* Brackenridge High School’s Lizette Hanson, who matched with The University of Notre Dame

The Match Scholarship is offered as part of a generous financial aid package provided by the college that covers the full cost of attendance, including tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and travel expenses. 

“The QuestBridge National College Match is a once-in-a-lifetime admissions and scholarship opportunity for students to gain educational equity and cultivate their academic success,” said Myra Fuentes, a college bound advisor at Travis Early College High School. “Ultimately, it allows QuestBridge Scholars to enrich their generation's cultural value and indisputably changes the trajectory of their family legacy.” 

For Travis senior Gabriel Gonzalez, the opportunity struck twice in his family. His older brother, Jason Gonzalez, matched with the University of Chicago last year and was able to help him with the process.

“I listened to him. He was making sure I was on top of things. I’m grateful for him helping me with this scholarship,” Gabriel said.

Gabriel, who wants to study entrepreneurship, said he is excited about experiencing an unfamiliar environment at Middlebury. 

“It’s going to allow me to grow more as a person because I’m going to see completely different things that I’m not used to here,” he said. “When you’re in a new environment like that, there’s a lot more challenges and more responsibility, and I want that responsibility because there is a lot more meaning in that.”

For Giselle Alcoser, getting matched with Washington University validated her as a scholar and made her dream education possible. She plans to study biomedical engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering.

“This means a lot for my family,” Giselle said. “There was a point in time where I didn’t know if I would be able to attend college due to financial situations and growing up in a single-parent household. My dad had to work really hard to allow me this opportunity. This is everything to them and to me because this is a strong indicator that I am ready for this, and I will eventually do something I’m very proud of.”

The QuestBridge National College Match is a national program that elevates high-achieving high school seniors from low-income backgrounds. Out of over 17,900 applicants this year, more than 1,755 students across the country were named as Match Scholarship Recipients with one of QuestBridge’s 48 college partners. 

The application is a months-long process with multiple essays, letters of recommendations, and other documentation. Finalists were notified in October. There were nine in San Antonio ISD. They had a quick turnaround to apply early decision and send additional documentation to up to 15 of the QuestBridge college partners by Nov. 1.

Then, on Dec. 1, the notifications came. For the finalists, Match Day is a day of huge stress and anticipation, waiting for the email to come. 

Giselle, who is on the dance team at Young Women’s Leadership Academy, said it was an extra crazy day, because it was also the SAISD Dance Showcase at Sam Houston. She was watching one of the dances during the dress rehearsal when the email came. 

“I opened the email and my face was just complete shock,” Giselle said. “My heart dropped in the best way possible. I couldn’t believe it. Just tears. I went to the bathroom and cleaned myself up. I went back to the auditorium and told my dance team friends and teacher. Then I called my family.”

Three district seniors who matched can now see their futures more clearly.

For Lizette at Brackenridge, studying biology at the University of Notre Dame is the first step in her dream to become a plastic surgeon. Growing up watching medical shows with her mom, she had an early interest in the medical field. 

“I like the idea of being able to help people, and to me plastic surgery was the way to go,” Lizette said. “I want people to be able to feel comfortable with themselves, with their bodies.”

Lizette had been sold on Notre Dame since the school visited last year. 

“I really love the sense of community they have,” Lizette said. “They talked about the connections you make there and how it’s like a family when you go there.”

Though the process was arduous, Hanson said she recommends all seniors apply. 

“I 100 percent wasn’t expecting to actually get it,” Lizette said. “My advice is just apply. Put yourself out there because you’re not going to know if you don’t try it.”

Tres estudiantes reciben Becas de QuestBridge Match

Tres estudiantes de San Antonio ISD fueron aceptados a la universidad superior de su elección a través del programa QuestBridge National Match Program de 2022. Estos tres estudiantes de último año de preparatoria, conocidos como Receptores de la Beca Match, recibirán becas de cuatro años a algunas de las mejores universidades del país. 

 Los estudiantes y las universidades a las que se dirigen se encuentran a continuación:
* Lizette Hanson de Brackenridge High School se dirige a The University of Notre Dame 
* Gabriel Gonzalez de Travis Early College High School se dirige a Middlebury College
* Giselle Alcoser Young Women de Leadership Academy se dirige a Washington University en St. Louis

La beca Match Scholarship se ofrece como parte de un paquete generoso de ayuda financiera proporcionado por la universidad que cubre el costo completo de la asistencia incluso la matrícula, el alojamiento y las comidas, los libros y útiles, y los costos del viaje.

La familia del estudiante de último año de preparatoria en Travis Gabriel Gonzalez, ha tenido dos receptores de la beca. Su hermano mayor, Jason Gonzalez, se dirigió a la University of Chicago el año pasado y pudo ayudarle con el proceso.

“Le hice caso. Él se aseguró de que cumpliera con todos los plazos. Le agradezco por ayudarme con esta beca”, dijo Gabriel.

Gabriel, que quiere estudiar emprendimiento, dijo que está entusiasmado por la oportunidad de experimentar un entorno desconocido en Middlebury. 

“Me permitirá crecer más como persona porque veré cosas completamente diferentes a lo que estoy acostumbrado”, dijo él. “Cuando uno entra a un nuevo entorno, hay muchos desafíos y más responsabilidad, y yo quiero esa responsabilidad porque es muy significativa”.

Para Giselle Alcoser, el ser aceptada a Washington University validó su trabajo como estudiante e hizo posible que la educación que tanto soñó se haga realidad. Ella tiene pensado estudiar ingeniería biomédica en la Facultad McKelvey de Ingeniería.

“Esto significa mucho para mi familia”, dijo Giselle. “Hubo cierto punto en el que no sabía si podría asistir a la universidad debido a situaciones financieras y al haber crecido en un hogar con un solo padre de familia. Mi papá tuvo que trabajar arduamente para permitirme esta oportunidad. Esto es muy significativo para ellos y para mí porque es un fuerte indicador de que estoy preparada para esto, y voy a lograr algo de lo que estaré muy orgullosa”.

El QuestBridge National College Match es un programa nacional que eleva a los estudiantes de último año de preparatoria de alto rendimiento y bajos recursos. Entre más de 17,900 solicitantes este año, más de 1,755 estudiantes de todo el país fueron nombrados beneficiarios de la beca Match Scholarship con uno de los 48 socios universitarios de QuestBridge.

Entonces, el primero de dic. llegaron las notificaciones. Para los finalistas, el Día de Decisiones es un día estresante y lleno de anticipación a medida que esperan que llegue el correo electrónico. 

Giselle, quien está en el equipo de baile en Young Women’s Leadership Academy, dijo que fue un día muy ajetreado, porque también fue el día de la Exhibición de Baile de SAISD en Sam Houston. Ella estaba observando a una de las bailarinas durante un ensayo cuando llegó el correo. 

“Abrí el correo electrónico y mi cara quedó totalmente perpleja”, dijo Giselle. “Mi corazón se aceleró de la mejor manera posible. No lo podía creer. Salieron las lágrimas. Fui al baño y me arreglé. Regresé al auditorio y les dije a mis amigas del equipo de baile y a mi maestra. Luego le hablé a mi familia”.

Los tres estudiantes que recibieron la beca ahora pueden ver sus futuros de forma más clara.

Para Hanson en Brackenridge, el estudiar biología en la University of Notre Dame es el primer paso en su sueño para llegar a ser cirujana plástica. Ella sintió un interés en el campo médico desde pequeña ya que creció viendo programas médicos con su mamá. 

“Me encanta la idea de ayudar a las personas, y para mí la cirugía plástica es la forma en la que me gustaría hacerlo”, dijo Lizette. “Quiero que las personas se sientan cómodas consigo mismas, con sus cuerpos”.

Hanson ha querido ir a Notre Dame desde que visitó la escuela el año pasado. 

“Me encanta el sentido comunitario que tienen”, dijo Lizette. “Hablaron sobre las conexiones que haremos allí y que son como una familia”.

A pesar de que el proceso fue riguroso, Hanson dice que recomienda que todos los estudiantes de último año de preparatoria soliciten. 

“100 por ciento no esperaba recibir la beca”, dijo Lizette. “Mi consejo es solicitar. Inténtalo porque uno nunca sabe si no lo intenta”.
