The Office of Postsecondary Initiatives and the SAISD Foundation have again partnered to remove barriers between district students and their college goals.
Offering a slate of tours to colleges and universities throughout the state, the partnership gives students in grades 9-12 not only a free ride to the school, but also the chance to meet the people and see the places that will help them persist in their academic journeys.
“There is an intentionality to these tours,” Dustin Nieto, coordinator of postsecondary initiatives, said. “We ask for input in the structure of the tours, to connect our students with student organizations and academic offices they will need to be successful.”
Depending on the campus and the students on the tour, those offices and organizations could include centers for first-generation college students, cultural organizations, or Greek organizations, in addition to financial aid offices and writing centers.
On Saturday, Feb. 4, 41 students and three chaperones from across the district boarded a Foundation-sponsored bus and traveled to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. On the tour, students met with academic departments and dined with college students.
“I decided to go on this trip to finalize my decision on attending Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi,” Nancy Garcia, a senior at Lanier High School, said. “This college tour served as a wake-up call for me because it becomes more real being on campus and learning about the campus climate.”
The tours are an essential part of the district’s strategy to connect students with their best match, best fit institutions that will allow them to thrive in their postsecondary careers.
“I believe that students should visit as many colleges and universities as possible while in high school,” Lanier College Bound Advisor Manuel Maldonado said. “This gives the students an opportunity to see which post-secondary institution fits them and their choice in major field of study.”
The district is still offering seven more college trips this spring, in addition to four that already took place in the fall and winter:
• Feb. 18 – University of Texas at San Antonio
• March 4 – University of Houston – Victoria
• March 5 – Austin College (Admitted students only)
• March 25 – Prairie View A&M University
• March 25 – Texas A&M University – Kingsville
• March 25 – Texas Lutheran University (Admitted students only)
• April 15 – Texas State University

Viajes universitarios informan y empoderan decisiones estudiantiles
La Oficina de Iniciativas de Educación Superior y la Fundación de SAISD se han asociado una vez más para eliminar las barreras entre los estudiantes del distrito y sus metas universitarias.
La asociación ofrece una variedad de recorridos a universidades en todo el estado y les proporciona a los estudiantes en los grados de 9-12 no solo transporte gratuito a la escuela, sino que también les da la oportunidad de conocer a las personas y ver los lugares que los ayudarán a continuar con sus trayectos académicos.
“Estos recorridos son intencionales”, dijo Dustin Nieto, coordinador de iniciativas de educación superior. “Pedimos aportes en cuanto a la estructura de los recorridos a fin de conectar a nuestros estudiantes con las organizaciones estudiantiles y oficinas académicas que necesitarán para ser exitosos”.
Dependiendo de la escuela y los estudiantes que estén en el recorrido, esas oficinas y organizaciones podían incluir centros para estudiantes universitarios de primera generación, organizaciones culturales u organizaciones griegas, además de oficinas financieras y centros de escritura.
El sábado, 4 de feb. 41 estudiantes y tres chaperones del distrito abordaron un autobús patrocinado por la Fundación y viajaron a Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Durante el recorrido los estudiantes se reunieron con departamentos académicos y comieron con los estudiantes universitarios.
“Decidí venir en este recorrido para cementar mi decisión de asistir a Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi”, dijo Nancy Garcia, estudiante de último año en Lanier High School. “Este recorrido me mostró cómo sería estar en el campus y puede aprender sobre el ambiente en la escuela”.
Los recorridos son una parte fundamental de la estrategia del distrito de conectar a los estudiantes con las instituciones de mejor ajuste que les permitirán prosperar en sus carreras de educación superior.
“Siento que los estudiantes deben visitar la mayor cantidad de universidades que puedan mientras están en la preparatoria”, dijo Manuel Maldonado, Consejero Universitario de Lanier. “Esto les da a los estudiantes una oportunidad de ver cuál institución de educación superior se ajusta mejor a ellos y al campo de estudio que elijan”.
El distrito aún está ofreciendo más recorridos universitarios esta primavera, además de los cuatro que se llevaron a cabo en otoño e invierno:
• 18 de feb. – University of Texas at San Antonio
• 4 de marzo – University of Houston – Victoria
• 5 de marzo – Austin College (Solo para estudiantes que han sido aceptados)
• 25 de marzo – Prairie View A&M University
• 25 de marzo – Texas A&M University – Kingsville
• 25 de marzo – Texas Lutheran University (Solo para estudiantes que han sido aceptados)
• 15 de marzo – Texas State University
