It was a true Enchilada Wednesday Feb. 8 as more than 200 members of the San Antonio Familia attended a Gathering of Community Voices at the Alamo Convocation Center, to share both a nostalgic enchilada dinner with chocolate cake and their thoughts on the Always Learning five-year strategic management plan.

The Gathering brought together alumni, parents, staff, grandparents, students, and engaged community members, all curious to see where the Always Learning plan was heading. 

Rene Cervantes, an alumnus of Pershing Elementary, Emerson Middle School, and Fox Tech High School, came to the event partially because of the positive experiences his granddaughter is having at Tynan Early Childhood Education Center.

“She started at three and her development is phenomenal,” Cervantes said. "What I’d like to see is what’s going to be the growth of the district — what direction the district is going in.”

District Chief Strategy Officer John Norman gave a general overview of the Always Learning plan’s four main sections — Our Students: Our Future; Our Employees: Our Strength; Our Organization: Our Heartbeat; and Our Community: Our Familia — before allowing guests to visit with district employees at stations representing the 12 components that comprise those four sections. It was there that guests could hear for themselves how the plans would be implemented.

“From 2010 when I first joined Fox Tech High School as a student, fast forward five years to right after my graduation and we started seeing the really big shifts in the district, starting with the renovation of a lot of the schools,” Geremy Landín, an alumnus and brother of a current SAISD student, said. “Now, it feels like what we are seeing is the internal infrastructure, the actual inner workings of our schools. There’s something really special about being intentional about sharing how our district is working towards the betterment of our schools.”

After learning about the plan and visiting the stations, families were encouraged to complete a survey to include their feedback on the plan. 

“I thought it was a really good opportunity to let our voices be heard,” parent Erica Olguin said. “I take it as a signal we’re including everyone and our voices matter— what parents want matters.”

The event was the second major event gathering feedback, with families now adding their voices to thousands of surveys already received by district employees and focus groups. The impact, said Superintendent Jaime Aquino, is significant.

“Thank you for sharing your dreams and your concerns,” he told the families Wednesday. “Our plan will be better because you are here, and your voices will be reflected.”

Do you have some more feedback? You can still fill out a survey. All members of the community are invited to contribute to this roadmap through Feb. 13. The final draft will be submitted to the board of trustees Feb. 27.

Cena comunitaria promueve conversación sobre el futuro

Exalumnos, padres, personal, abuelos, estudiantes y los miembros de la comunidad participaron en la reunión para ver a dónde se dirige el plan de Siempre Aprendiendo.

“Ella empezó a los tres años y su desarrollo es fenomenal”, dijo Cervantes. "Me gustaría ver cómo va a crecer el distrito y en qué dirección se dirige”.

John Norman, el Director Ejecutivo de Estrategia, dio un panorama general de las cuatro secciones principales del plan de Siempre Aprendiendo —Nuestros estudiantes: nuestro futuro; Nuestros empleados: nuestra fortaleza; Nuestra organización: nuestro motor; y Nuestra comunidad: nuestra familia— antes de permitir que los invitados se reunieran con empleados del distrito en las estaciones que representaban los 12 componentes dentro de esas cuatro secciones. Fue allí donde los invitados pudieron escuchar por sí mismos cómo se implementaría el plan.

“Desde 2010 cuando entré a Fox Tech High School como estudiante, a cinco años más tarde, justo después de mi graduación, empezamos a ver cambios muy grandes en el distrito, comenzando con la renovación de muchas escuelas”, dijo Geremy Landín, graduado de SAISD y hermano de un estudiante actual. “Ahora siento que estamos viendo la infraestructura interna, el funcionamiento interno de nuestras escuelas. Es muy especial el que se comparta deliberadamente que nuestro distrito está trabajando para mejorar nuestras escuelas”.

Después de aprender sobre el plan y visitar las estaciones, se les pidió a las familias que completaran una encuesta para compartir su retroalimentación sobre el plan.

“Me pareció una muy buena oportunidad para que se escucharan nuestras voces”, dijo Erica Olguin, madre de familia. “Es una señal de que estamos incluyendo a todos y que nuestras voces son importantes— que los deseos de los padres son importantes”.

Este fue el segundo evento principal para recopilar retroalimentación y ahora las familias han podido agregar sus voces a miles de encuestas que se han recibido por parte de los empleados del distrito y grupos focales. El Superintendente Jaime Aquino indica que el impacto es significativo.

“Gracias por compartir sus sueños y sus preocupaciones”, les dijo a las familias el miércoles. “Nuestro plan va a ser un mejor plan porque ustedes están aquí y sus voces van a estar reflejadas”.

¿Aún tiene más comentarios? Todavía puede completar una encuesta. Todos los miembros de la comunidad están invitados a aportar a este mapa hasta el 13 de feb. El borrador final se presentará ante la junta directiva el 27 de feb.
