It is perfectly acceptable to use the cliché “Art is Life” with Twain Dual Language Academy Art teacher Elisabeth Diaz. Because for Diaz it rings true.

“Art IS life. Art is all around you,” said Diaz. “The chair you’re sitting on, the table you’re using, the buildings we are in, everything around us is art. Somebody had to think of it and create it.”
Diaz built her career at San Antonio ISD. She has been a member of the SAISD Familia for 21 years, with the last 15 working at the place she says feels like home, Twain.

“I am in heaven. I love it here at Twain! The parent support that I get is outstanding,” said Diaz. “Kids at such a young age are so open, and they have this great imagination. What I love is that I start off with them in kinder, and I get to be with them all the way through eighth grade. And I get to keep that creativity and imagination going.”

What Diaz and her students are doing in her Art classroom is working. The veteran teacher was just named the campus-level “Teacher of the Year” for the first time in her career.

“I was really humbled and honored. I do my job because I love it. Everything I do is for my students to succeed. That is my passion in life,” Diaz said. “My biggest thing is to tell them just to try, and to never say ‘I can’t.’ That is the drive and passion I want to instill in my students: that no matter what, keep going and keep believing in your dreams.”

Diaz jokes she has been teaching long enough that she now has the children of former students in her class. Those relationships built over time are priceless.

“I just think there is something special about the community, and that spirit is what keeps me here,” Diaz said.

Es totalmente aceptable usar el cliché “el arte es vida” con la maestra de arte de Twain Dual Language Academy, Elisabeth Diaz. Porque para Diaz es cierto.

“El arte ES vida. El arte nos rodea,” dijo Diaz. “La silla donde estás sentado, la mesa que estás usando, los edificios que habitamos, todo lo que nos rodea es arte. Alguien tuvo que concebirlo y crearlo.”

Diaz forjó su carrera en San Antonio ISD. Ella ha sido miembro de la Familia de SAISD por 21 años, y los últimos 15 ha trabajado en el lugar que para ella es su hogar, Twain.

“Es un sueño. ¡Me encanta estar en Twain! El apoyo que recibo por parte de los padres es excepcional,” dijo Diaz. “Los niños a esta edad son tan abiertos y tienen una gran imaginación. Me encanta conocerlos desde kínder y poder estar con ellos hasta octavo grado. Y puedo promover esa creatividad e imaginación.”

El proceso de Diaz y sus estudiantes en su salón de arte está rindiendo frutos. La maestra veterana acaba de ser nombrada “Maestra del Año” al nivel de la escuela por primera vez en su carrera.

“Me sentí muy conmovida y honrada. Hago mi trabajo porque me encanta. Todo lo que hago es para que mis estudiantes logren el éxito. Esta es mi pasión en la vida,” dijo Diaz. “Algo muy importante para mí es recordarles que lo intenten y que nunca digan ‘No puedo’. Esa es la determinación y la pasión que quiero inculcar en mis estudiantes: a pesar de todo, sigan adelante y sigan creyendo en sus sueños.”

Diaz bromea que ha estado enseñando por tanto tiempo que ahora tiene a los hijos de sus antiguos alumnos en su clase. Las relaciones que se desarrollan a lo largo del tiempo no tienen precio.

“Esta comunidad tiene algo especial, y ese espíritu es lo que me mantiene aquí,” dijo Diaz.
