April is National Volunteer month, and a group of parents and grandparents at Smith Elementary exemplify what it means to give back. 

In fact, Smith Elementary is a second home for the Garzes family.  

"If I'm not home or at my dad's, I'm here," parent Denise Garzes said.  

But often, her dad is there, too. 

The two branches of the family combined so far have enrolled eight children at Smith, with another one set to register next fall. They've also given countless hours of volunteer work back to the school.  

Volunteering daily with her dad, Jose, his wife, Dorothy, and Denise’s fiancé, Philip Fey, the four are currently reading tutors through a Family Service program to first, second and third graders.  

But they'll do whatever else is needed: setting up for family engagement nights, or cutting laminating, something they gladly did even during the COVID shutdown. 

"We would come and pick it up, cut the laminations at home, and bring it back to the school," Denise said. 

Denise has been volunteering at the school for 13 years; Dorothy for 10, Jose for about five, and Philip for a year. It’s part of how they give back to the school that has poured so much into their family of diverse learners – a group which, including Denise’s siblings, children, and niece, includes students who receive services for dyslexia, gifted and talented education, learning disabilities, and a dual language learner. She credits the school with the personal attention the children receive toward making their academic goals, and for speaking up when they have an idea that might help. 

“The teachers here pay so much attention to the students that a lot of things can be brought up that a parent would never otherwise notice,” Denise said. “Since we have been here, everyone here — even those who are new — have always gone above and beyond.” 

Though they moved last year away from the school’s boundaries, they were able to request a transfer through the Office of Enrollment and Access and stay at the campus they love. 

“Though the ups and downs of my older children, the school has been there, helping, supporting, both academically and personal growth,” Denise said. “There are many reasons why I love Smith Elementary.” 

But she was quick to add that they’ve loved all the campuses their children attend as they age – including Poe Middle School, and Brackenridge, Highlands, and Sam Houston High Schools. 

“It’s not just Smith; with us it’s SAISD,” Denise said. “We are keeping our kids here, no matter what.”

Familia Garzes – Smith Elementary

Abril es el Mes Nacional de Voluntarios, y un grupo de padres y abuelos en Smith Elementary ejemplifican lo que significa servir a la comunidad. 

De hecho, Smith Elementary es como un segundo hogar para la familia Garzes.  

"Si no estoy en casa o en casa de mi papá, estoy aquí", dijo Denise Garzes, madre de familia.  

Pero a menudo, su padre también está aquí. 

Entre las dos ramas de la familia han tenido a ocho niños inscritos en Smith, y uno más se inscribirá el otoño que entra. También han donado un sinfín de horas de trabajo voluntario a la escuela.  

Ella, junto con su papá, Jose, la esposa de su papá, Dorothy, y el comprometido de Denise, Philip Fey, actualmente ofrecen trabajo voluntario como tutores de lectura para estudiantes de primero, segundo y tercer grado a través un programa de Servicio para Familias.  

Pero hacen cualquier otra tarea que sea necesaria: hacer los arreglos para las noches de participación familiar, o cortar y laminar, algo que hicieron con gusto incluso durante el cierre de COVID. 

"Veníamos para recoger los materiales, cortábamos las laminaciones en casa y las traíamos de regreso a la escuela", dijo Denise. 

Denise lleva 13 años ayudando como voluntaria en la escuela; Dorothy por 10, Jose alrededor de cinco y Philip un año. En parte es su forma de prestar servicio a la escuela que ha ayudado tanto a su familia de aprendices diversos – un grupo que incluye a los hermanos, hijos y sobrina de Denise y que cuenta con estudiantes que reciben servicios de dislexia, educación para dotados y talentosos, discapacidades de aprendizaje y un estudiante de lenguaje dual. Ella le da crédito a la escuela por la atención personal que reciben los niños para lograr sus metas académicas, y por decir algo cuando tienen una idea que podría ser útil. 

“Los maestros aquí prestan mucha atención a los estudiantes por lo que pueden identificar muchas cosas que un padre tal vez no notaría”, dijo Denise. “Desde que estamos aquí, todos —incluso las personas que son nuevas—siempre han ido más allá de su deber”. 

A pesar de que se mudaron fuera de los límites de la escuela el año pasado, pudieron solicitar una transferencia a través de la Oficina de Acceso e Inscripción y permanecer en la escuela que tanto quieren. 

“La escuela ha estado allí a través de los altibajos de mis hijos mayores para ayudar y apoyar, tanto de forma académica como para el crecimiento personal”, dijo Denise. “Hay muchas razones por las que quiero a Smith Elementary”. 

Pero pronto agregó que les han encantado todas las escuelas a las que han asistido sus hijos a medida que crecen – incluso Poe Middle School, y las escuelas preparatorias de Brackenridge, Highlands y Sam Houston. 

“No solo es Smith; para nosotros es todo SAISD”, dijo Denise. “Vamos a mantener a nuestros niños aquí, pase lo que pase”.
