Oscar García-Roman, a dual language math teacher at CAST Med High School, has been awarded a 2023 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

García-Roman and 14 other distinguished educators nominated by area school districts received the prize during a ceremony on May 5 at the Trinity University campus. 

“Receiving this recognition represents a great honor,” García-Roman said. “I receive it with much love, respect and gratitude, knowing that there are many educators out there giving their best every day from their trenches. I bow my head in honor of their hard work and the love with which they carry it out every day. Congratulations to all, together we can continue to make a difference in the lives of our students.”

According to the Trinity University website, the Trinity Prize is greater San Antonio area’s oldest and most prestigious teaching award, and it was launched in 1982 to honor public school teachers who distinguish their teaching practice through outstanding classroom performance, leadership in the school and school district, contributions to the education profession, and stellar community service.

Now in its 41st year, the prize comes with a Tiffany Crystal Apple as a gift from the University and a City of San Antonio commendation from Mayor Ron Nirenberg. From sponsor Whataburger, awardees receive a $500 cash prize, a $250 Amazon gift card for a student organization or effort of their selection at their school or in the community that supports diversity and inclusion in education, and a Whataburger gift basket, including Whataburger for a year. The University’s Department of Education and Center for Educational Leadership awarded an additional $150 Amazon gift card for classroom supplies.

Born and raised in Mexico, García-Roman said his mother helped instill in him the importance of education. He also gave credit to the many teachers in those early years who shaped him. 

“I was fortunate to have great teachers throughout my academic life, whose dedication and love for what they did was noticeable,” García-Roman said. “From them I received not only the technical aspects of education, but also the value of perseverance and effort. I always wanted to be a little more like them.”

Now in his 20th year of teaching and his fourth in his current role at CAST Med, García-Roman is teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Precalculus, Statistics and AP Calculus both as monolingual and dual language classes. He has also helped initiate a partnership between CAST Med and a prestigious educational system in Mexico —Tecnológico de Monterrey.

“I want my students to connect with real life applications and carry out projects where they can demonstrate their progress and their mastery,” García-Roman said. “My lessons are more student-centered based on the foundations of inquiry-based learning throughout experiential learning. I have been witnessing the students’ growth in their self-esteem and responsibility as a natural consequence in learning. It is very rewarding when a student leaves a classroom with confidence about what they now know and what they can do.”

A National Board Certified teacher candidate and San Antonio ISD’s 2022 High School Distinguished Teacher of the Year, García-Roman is quick to credit the team with whom he serves. 

“I have the honor to work in an environment where everybody supports each other, where teamwork and mutual help are promoted, where a teacher receives the resources and support that is needed, and moreover, the trust and confidence needed to continue working and developing ideas into projects for students’ success,” he said. “That I am successful as teacher is in great part because I have been part of effective teams and a supportive school system.”

“The teaching career is a vocation and I feel very proud to have listened to and accepted the call, because in this way everything I do every day has a firm purpose: to be there for my students. So, today I feel fulfilled.”

Maestro de matemáticas recibe premio Trinity

Oscar García-Roman, maestro de matemáticas de lenguaje dual en CAST Med High School, recibió el Premio Trinity 2023 por la Excelencia en la Enseñanza.
 
García-Roman y otros 14 educadores distinguidos nominados por los distritos escolares del área recibieron el premio durante una ceremonia el 5 de mayo en el campus de Trinity University. 
 
“El recibir este reconocimiento representa un gran honor”, dijo García-Roman. “Lo recibo con mucho amor, respeto y gratitud, sabiendo que hay muchos educadores allá afuera dando lo mejor de sí todos los días desde sus trincheras. Reconozco su arduo trabajo y al amor con el que lo llevan a cabo todos los días. Felicidades a todos, juntos podemos seguir marcando la diferencia en la vida de nuestros estudiantes”.
 
De acuerdo al sitio web de Trinity University, el Trinity Prize es el premio más antiguo y más prestigioso de enseñanza en todo San Antonio, y fue fundado en 1982 para distinguir a maestros de escuelas públicas quienes destacan su práctica de la enseñanza por medio de excelente rendimiento en el salón de clases, liderazgo en la escuela y en el distrito escolar, contribuciones a la profesión de educación y servicio comunitario espectacular.
 
Ahora en su año 41, el premio viene con una manzana de cristal de Tiffany como regalo de la Universidad y un reconocimiento de la ciudad de San Antonio por parte del alcalde Ron Nirenberg. Los premiados reciben un premio en efectivo de $500, una tarjeta de regalo de Amazon de $250 para una organización estudiantil o esfuerzo de su selección en su escuela o en la comunidad que apoya la diversidad y la inclusión en la educación, y una canasta de regalo de Whataburger, que incluye Whataburger por un año por parte del patrocinador, Whataburger. El Departamento de Educación y el Centro para el Liderazgo Educativo de la Universidad otorgaron una tarjeta de regalo adicional de $150 de Amazon para útiles escolares.
 
Nacido y criado en México, García-Roman dijo que su madre lo ayudó a inculcarle la importancia de la educación. También dio crédito a los muchos maestros en esos primeros años que lo moldearon. 
 
“Tuve la suerte de tener grandes maestros a lo largo de mi vida académica, cuya dedicación y amor por lo que hacían se notaba”, dijo García-Roman. “De ellos recibí no solo los aspectos técnicos de la educación, sino también el valor de la constancia y el esfuerzo. Siempre quise ser un poco más como ellos”.
 
Ahora en su vigésimo año de enseñanza y el cuarto en su puesto actual en CAST Med, García-Roman está enseñando Álgebra 1, Álgebra 2, Geometría, Precálculo, Estadística y Cálculo AP en clases monolingües y bilingües. También ayudó a iniciar una asociación entre CAST Med y un prestigioso sistema educativo en México: el Tecnológico de Monterrey.
 
“Quiero que mis alumnos se conecten con aplicaciones de la vida real y realicen proyectos donde puedan demostrar su progreso y su dominio”, dijo García-Roman. “Mis lecciones están más centradas en el estudiante y se basan en los fundamentos del aprendizaje basado en la indagación a lo largo del aprendizaje experiencial. He sido testigo del crecimiento de los estudiantes en su autoestima y responsabilidad como una consecuencia natural del aprendizaje. Es muy gratificante cuando un estudiante sale de un salón de clases con confianza sobre lo que ahora sabe y lo que puede hacer”.
 
García-Roman, candidato a maestro certificado por la Junta Nacional y Maestro Distinguido del Año de la Escuela Preparatoria 2022 de San Antonio ISD, reconoce al equipo con el que trabaja. 
 
“Tengo el honor de trabajar en un ambiente donde todos se apoyan, donde se promueve el trabajo en equipo y la ayuda mutua, donde un docente recibe los recursos y el apoyo que necesita, y además, la confianza necesaria para seguir trabajando y desarrollando ideas en proyectos para el éxito de los estudiantes”, dijo. “El que tenga éxito como maestro se debe en gran parte a que he sido parte de equipos efectivos y de un sistema escolar de apoyo”.
 
“La carrera de maestro es una vocación y me siento muy orgulloso de haber escuchado y aceptado el llamado, porque de esta manera todo lo que hago todos los días tiene un propósito firme: estar ahí para mis alumnos. Por lo que hoy me siento realizado”.
