Highland Park Elementary third grader E’lontay Boston has wanted to be a boxer since he was three years old.
“It feels good when I’m in the ring. I just feel relaxed. I feel calm,” said E’Lontay. “When I’m in the ring, it’s all business. I become ‘Beast E’Lontay’.”
Movie night several years ago cemented E’Lontay’s desire to learn the sweet science of boxing.
“My dad turned on the ‘Rocky’ movies and ‘Creed’ movies. It made me want to learn how to fight,” said the nine-year old. “‘Rocky’ got me motivated. It gets me hyped.”
E’Lontay got so hyped that he followed the fictional Rocky Balboa’s championship path. In only his second year in the ring, E’Lontay won the gold medal at the Jr. Olympics Boxing Championships April 22 in Corpus Christi.
“I felt so good. Last year, I left with the silver medal. This time we came back home with the title,” E’Lontay said as he stared at his giant gold medal. “I learned that you always have to do your best and keep going when you get knocked down. Rocky fought hard the first time against Apollo Creed, but he lost. Then I saw ‘Rocky II’, and this time Rocky got the knockout in the last round. We both lost, and we both came back and went for it again. And we both won. That’s what we have in common.”
E’Lontay’s mom Eboney King is an instructional assistant at Highland Park Elementary.
“Boxing has changed his life for the better,” said King. “It brought discipline to his life.”
It is the discipline learned in the boxing ring that E’Lontay carries with him to his Highland Park classes.
“You’ve got to make good grades or I can’t fight. That’s the rule with my parents,” said E’Lontay. “Action, not attitude, gets the job done in and out of the ring.”
E’Lontay’s mom calls Highland Park Elementary “my second family.” E’Lontay is the last of her four kids to attend the “A” rated school.

“This whole school is really about kindness,” said E’Lontay. “You want to show that you’re a kind person. You want to show little kids that you can be kind. Then when they get older, they can be kind. And it’s because you helped start that as a role model. That’s a good feeling to have.”

E’Lontay sueña con ganar un campeonato mundial indiscutible algún día. Por ahora, él solo quiere retribuir a Highland Park lo que le ha dado a él.
E’lontay Boston, estudiante de tercer grado de Highland Park Elementary, ha querido ser boxeador desde que tenía tres años.
“Me siento bien cuando estoy en el cuadrilátero. Me siento relajado. Me siento tranquilo”, dijo E’lontay. “Cuando estoy en el cuadrilátero, es hora de trabajar. Me convierto en la ‘Bestia E’Lontay’”.
Una noche de película hace varios años ayudó a definir el deseo de E’Lontay de aprender la ciencia del boxeo.
“Mi papá puso las películas de ‘Rocky’ y ‘Creed’. Hizo que quisiera aprender a pelear”, dijo el niño de nueve años. “‘Rocky’ me motivó. Es algo que me anima”.
E’lontay se sintió tan inspirado que siguió el camino ficticio de Rocky Balboa al campeonato. En su segundo año en el cuadrilátero, E’Lontay ganó la medalla de oro en el Campeonato Juvenil de Boxeo el 22 de abril en Corpus Christi.
“Me sentí tan bien. El año pasado recibí la medalla de plata. Esta vez regresé a casa con el campeonato”, dijo E’lontay mientras miraba fijamente su medalla gigante de oro. “Aprendí que siempre tienes que dar tu mejor esfuerzo y seguir adelante después de caer. Rocky dio su mejor esfuerzo la primera vez contra Apollo Creed y perdió. Luego vi ‘Rocky II’, y esta vez Rocky logró el nocaut. Ambos perdimos, y ambos volvimos a intentarlo. Y ambos ganamos. Eso es lo que tenemos en común”.
La mamá de E’lontay, Eboney King, es una asistente de instrucción en Highland Park Elementary.
“El boxeo ha cambiado su vida para bien”, dijo King. “Trajo la disciplina a su vida”.
Una disciplina desarrollada en el cuadrilátero que E’Lontay lleva consigo a sus clases en Highland Park.
“Tengo que sacar buenas calificaciones o no puedo pelear. Esa es la regla con mis papás”, dijo E’lontay. “La acción, no la actitud, es lo que logra resultados dentro y fuera del cuadrilátero”.
La mamá de E’Lontay indica que Highland Park Elementary es “mi segunda familia”.
E’Lontay es el último de sus cuatro hijos que asiste a la escuela con clasificación superior. E’Lontay sueña con ganar un campeonato mundial indiscutible algún día. Por ahora, él solo quiere retribuir a Highland Park lo que le ha dado a él.
“La escuela completa demuestra bondad”, dijo E’Lontay. “Quieres mostrar que eres una persona bondadosa. Quieres enseñarles a los niños pequeños que puedes ser bondadoso. Luego, cuando ellos crezcan, pueden ser bondadosos. Y es porque tú fuiste un ejemplo a seguir. Ese es un buen sentimiento”.
