“I chose a school district because I wanted to work directly with kids.”
SAISD Police Officer Oscar DeLira didn’t just know he wanted to be a cop. He also knew exactly where he wanted to work.
“I chose a school district because I wanted to work directly with kids,” DeLira said. “That’s where most of my influence was growing up — at school.”
Six years into his career with the SAISD Police Department, DeLira is now at Lanier High School after working three years at Rhodes Middle School. Each morning begins with him walking through the main campus so he can greet the students and they know he is there.
“I like to put myself in main areas where there’s a lot of traffic,” he said. “The students know they can come talk to me about anything. And they often do.”
Even beyond his normal 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. schedule, DeLira picks up extra shifts and voluntarily attends athletic events, just to be there for the student athletes. He also makes goodie bags for the varsity athletes for each sport, to encourage and reward them for their grades and level of play achieved to compete at the varsity level.
During the Halloween season, you will find Officer DeLira donating candy to the SAISD Police Department Trunk or Treat and dressing up to entertain the students in the community. At the prom, he becomes a master at helping students get their tuxedo bowties properly tied. Whenever the students need him, Officer DeLira is there.
“He continues to encourage students to participate in school and in the community, to always give back,” Lieutenant Christina Houston said. “He models that with his actions.”
It’s all part of Officer DeLira’s goal of working with students to be part of the same team. He says it’s all about monitoring and mentoring.
“We’re trying to build a relationship with these kids,” DeLira said. “We’re here trying to get them to trust us. If we start getting involved with the kids, we can all work together to make the community a better place.”

“Escogí un distrito escolar porque quería trabajar directamente con niños”.
El Agente de Policía de SAISD Oscar DeLira no solo sabía que quería ser policía. También sabía exactamente dónde quería trabajar.
“Escogí un distrito escolar porque quería trabajar directamente con niños”, dijo DeLira. “Allí es donde sentí la mayor influencia al crecer — en la escuela”.
DeLira lleva seis años con el Departamento de Policía de SAISD. Ahora está en Lanier High School después de trabajar tres años en Rhodes Middle School. Comienza cada mañana con una caminata a través del plantel principal para poder saludar a los estudiantes y que sepan que él está allí.
“Me gusta estar en las áreas principales donde hay mucho tráfico”, dijo. “Los estudiantes saben que pueden venir y hablar conmigo sobre cualquier cosa. Y lo hacen a menudo”.
Aún después de su horario normal de 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., DeLira toma turnos extra y asiste a eventos atléticos de forma voluntaria, a fin de estar allí para los estudiantes atletas. También hace bolsitas de regalo para los atletas de varsity de cada deporte para animarlos y premiarlos por sus calificaciones y el nivel de juego que han logrado para competir al nivel de varsity.
Durante la temporada de Halloween, el Agente DeLira dona dulces al evento “Trunk or Treat” del Departamento de Policía de SAISD y se viste con disfraz para entretener a los estudiantes de la comunidad. En el baile de fin de año él se convierte en un maestro al ayudar a los estudiantes a amarrarse bien la corbata. Cuando los estudiantes lo necesitan, el Agente DeLira está allí.
“Él continúa animando a los estudiantes a participar en la escuela y en la comunidad, a siempre prestar servicio”, dijo la Teniente Christina Houston. “Él es un ejemplo de eso a través de sus acciones”.
Es parte de la meta del Agente DeLira de trabajar con los estudiantes y ser parte del mismo equipo. Él indica que se trata de vigilar y asesorar.
“Estamos tratando de desarrollar relaciones con estos niños”, dijo DeLira. “Queremos lograr que ellos confíen en nosotros. Si empezamos a involucrarnos con los niños, todos podemos trabajar juntos para hacer de la comunidad un mejor lugar”.
