Christopher Reese, theatre teacher at Sam Houston High School and San Antonio ISD Distinguished Teacher of the Year at the high school level, was named the Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Alamo Area Alliance of Black School Educators at a banquet May 20. 

“I was generally surprised that I’d won considering I was surrounded by so many examples of excellence,” Reese said. “That room was full of love and the conviction that we are doing the best we can for students.”

An alumnus of SAISD, Reese attended Pershing and Douglass Elementary Schools, Poe Middle School and graduated from Highlands High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Texas State and his Master of Arts in Theatre at the University of Texas at Austin. He has now been teaching theatre at Sam Houston for the last six years, during which time the program has experienced significant growth.

“Mr. Reese set a goal to build the program and he exceeded it,” Sam Houston principal Sharene Dixon said in his nomination materials. “He was able to build a program to what it is now — a program of over 180 students, with multiple performances as well as success in UIL.”

The program has expanded to a point where a second theatre teacher is needed, Dixon added. In the 2022-2023 year, under Reese’s guidance, and with funding from the SAISD Foundation, the school hosted its first musical, “The WIZ,” in more than 50 years.  

Heavily involved in the local theatre community, Reese will lead the Summer Theatre Intensive at The Carver Cultural Arts Center. Sam Houston theatre and choir students also had the opportunity to perform at the Carver’s Earth Day event at Confluence Park.

 
“Through the relationships he has established and fostered with organizations and members of the community, his students have had numerous opportunities to attend live performances and participate in master classes and discussions with local and nationally touring artists and other professionals,” Cassandra Parker-Nowicki, executive director of the Carver, said. “They have also had opportunities to showcase their own talents at various community events.” 

In his time at Sam Houston, Reese served his campus as Fine Arts Department Chair and as a new teacher mentor. At the district level, he has served on the Always Learning Coaching Team, the Teacher Advisory Council, and as part of the district curriculum writing team.

“Mr. Reese is a shining star in our district and city for his impact on the lives of all his students,” Elise Lopez, coordinator of Theatre Art, said.

While his list of accomplishments are lengthy, Dixon says Reese’s greatest achievements are the relationships he builds with his students. 

“It is the students that he has been able to motivate and the love that he exhibits and demonstrates for students through teaching,” she said. “He has students that were struggling and looking for a place to belong, students whose home life is unstable, and they find stability and motivation in theatre. Mr. Reese assists students in finding their true calling through love, grace, accountability, and fun.”

Reese said the award, which he received at the AAABSE 8th Annual Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards and Student Scholarships Gala at St. Philip’s College, further affirms his calling to the profession of teaching.

“Winning this award is an indication that someone has seen what I do with and for my students and validates the decision to become an educator even when education is not truly appreciated in this country,” Reese said. “Great educators brought me here, and it is truly my job to simply pay it forward. My teachers invested in me, and now it’s my turn to invest in my students.”

Maestro Distinguido del Año Honrado por AAABSE

Christopher Reese, maestro de teatro en la Escuela Sam Houston High School y Maestro Distinguido del Año del Distrito Escolar Independiente de San Antonio, fue nombrado Maestro del Año a nivel de preparatoria por la Alianza de Educadores de Escuelas Afroamericanas del Área del Álamo en un banquete el 20 de mayo. 
 
“En general, me sorprendió haber ganado considerando que estaba rodeado de tantos ejemplos de excelencia”, dijo Reese. “Ese salón estaba lleno de amor y la convicción de que estamos haciendo lo mejor que podemos por los estudiantes”.
 
Reese, como exalumno de SAISD, asistió a las Escuelas Pershing y Douglass Elementary Schools, a la Escuela Poe Middle School y se graduó de la Escuela Highlands High School. Obtuvo su licenciatura en Texas State y su Maestría en Teatro en la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Durante los últimos seis años ha estado enseñando teatro en Sam Houston, y durante ese tiempo el cual el programa ha experimentado un crecimiento significativo.
 
"El Sr. Reese estableció una meta de edificar el programa y la superó”, dijo la directora de Sam Houston, Sharene Dixon, en sus materiales de nominación. “Él pudo edificar el programa a lo que es ahora: un programa de más de 180 estudiantes, con múltiples actuaciones y éxito en UIL”.
 
El programa se ha expandido hasta el punto en que se necesita un segundo maestro de teatro, agregó Dixon. En el año 2022-2023, bajo la dirección de Reese y con fondos de la Fundación de SAISD, la escuela presentó su primer musical, "The WIZ", en más de 50 años.  
 
Reese está muy involucrado en la comunidad teatral local y dirigirá el Campamento Intensivo de Teatro de Verano en The Carver Cultural Arts Center. Los estudiantes de teatro y coro de Sam Houston también tuvieron la oportunidad de actuar en el evento del Día de la Tierra de Carver en Confluence Park.
 
“A través de las relaciones que ha establecido y fomentado con organizaciones y miembros de la comunidad, sus estudiantes han tenido numerosas oportunidades de asistir a presentaciones en vivo y participar en clases magistrales y debates con artistas de gira locales y nacionales y otros profesionales”, dijo Cassandra Parker-Nowicki, Directora Ejecutiva del Carver. “También han tenido la oportunidad de mostrar sus propios talentos en varios eventos comunitarios”. 
 
En su tiempo en Sam Houston, Reese se desempeñó en su escuela como Director del Departamento de Bellas Artes y como mentor para maestros nuevos. A nivel del distrito, se ha desempeñado en el Equipo de Entrenamiento de Siempre Aprendiendo,el Consejo Asesor de Maestros y como parte del equipo de redacción del plan de estudios del distrito.
 
"El Sr. Reese es una estrella brillante en nuestro distrito y ciudad por su impacto en la vida de todos sus estudiantes”, dijo Elise López, Coordinadora de Arte Teatral.
 
Si bien su lista de logros es larga, Dixon dice que los mayores logros de Reese son las relaciones que desarrolla con sus alumnos. 
 
“Son los estudiantes a quienes ha podido motivar y el amor que exhibe y demuestra por los estudiantes a través de la enseñanza”, dijo. “Tiene estudiantes que tenían dificultades y buscaban un lugar donde pertenecer, estudiantes cuya vida hogareña es inestable y encuentran estabilidad y motivación en el teatro. El Sr. Reese ayuda a los estudiantes a encontrar su verdadera vocación a través del amor, la gracia, la responsabilidad y la diversión”.
 
Reese dijo que el premio, que recibió en la 8ª Gala Anual de Becas para Estudiantes y Premios al Maestro Destacado del Año de la AAABSE en St. Philip's College, reafirma aún más su vocación a la profesión de la enseñanza.
 
“El ganar este premio es una indicación de que alguien ha visto lo que hago con y por mis estudiantes y valida la decisión de convertirme en educador, incluso cuando la educación no se aprecia realmente en este país”, dijo Reese. “Grandes educadores me trajeron aquí, y realmente es mi trabajo simplemente devolver el favor. Mis maestros invirtieron en mí y ahora me toca a mí invertir en mis alumnos”.
