Mirna Dubon believes in the transformative power of education. It allows you to grow professionally, to improve your future. That’s why she emphasizes that her daughters go to school every day. 

Little did she know that decision would make a huge difference in their family’s life at the present.

On June 10, Dubon traveled to the Frost Tower Garage with her daughter Sherly Gonzalez Dubon by bus, one of 10 finalist families in the SAISD Foundation’s Attend, Achieve, and Win Incentive program.

The program, a partnership between the SAISD Foundation, Frost Bank, and Cavender Auto, automatically entered SAISD Families for prizes throughout the school year, based on 90% or better attendance each quarter or improved attendance from the previous year. The higher the attendance rate or improvement, the more entries the family received. The grand prize – a 2023 Toyota RAV4.

When the Dubons, and other finalist families arrived, a ball randomizer determined which of 10 numbered keys they would receive. Sherly, a Tafolla student, drew number seven. 

As one by one, the students, assisted by Cavender staff, tested their keys, Mirna thought about her last two years since she had arrived from Honduras.

"I’ve been working every day, all of 2022 I worked and worked, 2023 as well, I’ve worked and worked, always saving a little here and there,” Mirna said. “But the savings were not growing, and I thought, ‘one day I will save to have a car, even if it’s a $4,000 used car.’” 

Sherly stepped up to the car with key number seven. She pulled the handle and it didn’t open. Cavender staff checked and told her to try it again. 

With a big pull, the door opened and confetti exploded around her. Sherly gasped. Mirna’s eyes filled with tears. Her bike, which she used to commute to work, had recently been stolen, leaving her to take the bus or walk to work. 

“Suddenly, I won a car after having to walk at night after work,” she said. “I´ve been telling everyone I know, my friends, my colleagues, my daughter´s friends from school, ‘see why it’s important to go to school and always put your best face forward?’”

The Dubon family wasn’t the only one that walked away with a prize that day. The other nine finalists, plus 10 other finalists from the fourth nine weeks, each received a $500 savings account from the Foundation in partnership with Frost and the Cavender Auto Family as part of the culminating event celebrating attendance.
“This event showcases the commitment that we and our partners have to empowering students to reach their full potential by attending school every day,” Judy Geelhoed, executive director of the SAISD Foundation, said. 

For Mirna Dubon, it was an answer to a need she had for a long time, and only affirms what she tells her daughters about the power of education. 

“It is very important because that is how you learn to develop in whatever area you are presented with, whether it´s communication, speaking in public, learning a new language, or learning to use technology, a computer,” Mirna said. “All of that is very important because it allows you to grow professionally, that is what I tell my daughters. Always go to school because it will allow you to grow professionally in all fields.”

Poco sabía ella que esa decisión marcaría una gran diferencia en la vida de su familia en el presente.
 
El 10 de junio, Dubon viajó al estacionamiento de la Frost Tower con su hija Sherly Gonzalez Dubon en autobús, una de las 10 familias finalistas en el concurso de la Fundación de SAISD. Attend, Achieve, and Win Incentive program.
 
El programa, una asociación entre la Fundación de SAISD, Frost Bank y Cavender Auto, cual ingresó automáticamente a las familias de SAISD para premios durante todo el año escolar, en función del 90 % o más de asistencia cada trimestre o una asistencia mejorada con respecto al año anterior. Cuanto mayor haya sido la tasa de asistencia o la mejora, más entradas recibió la familia. El gran premio: una camioneta Toyota RAV4 2023.
 
Cuando llegaron los Dubon y otras familias finalistas, un aleatorizador de números determinó cuál de las 10 llaves numeradas recibirían. Sherly, alumna de Tafolla, extrajo el número siete. 
 
Mientras que los estudiantes, asistidos por el personal de Cavender, uno por uno probaban sus llaves, Mirna pensó en los últimos dos años desde que había llegado de Honduras.
 
“He estado trabajando todos los días, todo el 2022 trabajé y trabajé, 2023 también, trabajé y trabajé, siempre ahorrando un poco aquí y allá”, dijo Mirna. “Pero los ahorros no crecían y pensé: ‘algún día ahorraré para tener un auto, aunque sea un auto usado de $4,000’”. 
 
Sherly se acercó al auto con la llave número siete. Tiró de la manija y no se abrió. El personal de Cavender revisó y le dijo que lo intentara de nuevo. 
 
Con un gran tirón, la puerta se abrió y el confeti explotó a su alrededor. Sherly se quedó sin aliento. Los ojos de Mirna se llenaron de lágrimas. Su bicicleta, que usaba para ir al trabajo, había sido robada recientemente, dejándola con la única alternativa de tomar el autobús o caminar al trabajo. 
 
“De repente, gané un automóvil después de tener que caminar por la noche después del trabajo”, dijo. "Le he estado diciendo a todos los que conozco, mis amigos, mis colegas, los amigos de la escuela de mi hija, '¿ves por qué es importante ir a la escuela y siempre mostrar tu mejor cara?'"
 
La familia Dubon no fue la única que se llevó un premio ese día. Los otros nueve finalistas, más otros 10 finalistas de las cuartas nueve semanas, recibieron cada uno una cuenta de ahorros de $500 de la Fundación en asociación con Frost y Cavender Auto Family como parte del evento culminante que celebra la asistencia.
“Este evento muestra el compromiso que tenemos nosotros y nuestros socios para empoderar a los estudiantes para que alcancen su máximo potencial al asistir a la escuela todos los días”, dijo Judy Geelhoed, Directora Ejecutiva de la Fundación SAISD. 
 
Para Mirna Dubon, fue una respuesta a una necesidad que tenía desde hace mucho tiempo, y solo afirma lo que les dice a sus hijas sobre el poder de la educación. 
 
“Es muy importante porque así aprendes a desarrollarte en cualquier área que se te presente, ya sea comunicación, hablar en público, aprender un nuevo idioma o aprender a usar la tecnología, una computadora”, dijo Mirna. “Todo eso es muy importante porque te permite crecer profesionalmente, eso le digo a mis hijas. Ve siempre a la escuela porque te permitirá crecer profesionalmente en todos los campos.”
