Catherine Osteguin of Burbank High School, and Joseph Gentile and Trinity Williams of CAST Tech High School all achieved the recognition, earning an invitation to participate in the Cyber Foundations Academy this summer, a multi-week online program based on the nationally-recognized SANS Foundations training course and certification – valued at more than $3,000.

They earned eligibility to apply for the scholarship program by their participation in CyberStart America, an online program that provides a gateway for high school students to explore their cybersecurity skills and learn about the cyber industry and careers. 

Osteguin, a rising 10th grader at Burbank in the International Baccalaureate program, did the CyberStart program as an extracurricular activity, along with student council, Esports, soccer, and the school’s Best Buddies mentorship program.

“I was really excited for this because I wasn’t too sure how to get into tech,” Osteguin said. “I’m interested in anything that’s computer or tech because I think it’s fascinating to me how we can create something that can do so much. I’m really excited for this scholarship to just learn more.”

The Academy offers skills in computers and data, operating systems, networking and cloud, programming and security concepts. 

Gentile, a rising senior at CAST Tech, got into the CyberStart program through his AP Computer Science class. 

“I have a big fascination for programming,” he said. 

Looking to attend either UTSA for cybersecurity or the United States Air Force Academy, Gentile hopes to go into it or networking. 

“I want to use the knowledge and skills taught to me to give back,” he said.

Williams, also a rising senior, has been doing CyberStart since her ninth grade year, and says she highly recommends the program.

“Even if they aren’t interested in doing cybersecurity, it’s really important to know the basics,” Williams said.

All three students credit their teachers for introducing them to this opportunity. Osteguin said she only had days of a computer class this year before a schedule conflict forced her to change classes, but Career and Technical Education teacher Pete Barcenez encouraged her to keep going with CyberStart on her own time. 

Williams and Gentile said their instructors were key to getting them to this point, as well. 

“A bunch of opportunities I had I would have never had if I hadn’t gone to CAST Tech,” Williams said. “The teachers are amazing. They go above and beyond for students and to get kids interested.”

Tres estudiantes del distrito son nombrados Cyber Scholars

Tres estudiantes de San Antonio ISD han sido nombrados Cyber Scholars por la National Cyber Scholarship Foundation. 
 
Catherine Osteguin de Burbank High School, y Joseph Gentile y Trinity Williams de CAST Tech High School lograron el reconocimiento y obtuvieron una invitación para participar en la academia Cyber Foundations Academy este verano, un programa en línea de varias semanas basado en el curso de capacitación y certificación SANS Foundations el cual es reconocido a nivel nacional, con un valor de más de $3,000.
 
Obtuvieron la elegibilidad para solicitar el programa de becas por su participación en CyberStart America, un programa en línea que proporciona una oportunidad para que los estudiantes de preparatoria exploren sus habilidades de seguridad cibernética y aprendan sobre la industria y las carreras cibernéticas. 
 
Osteguin, una estudiante que entrará a décimo grado en Burbank en el programa de Bachillerato Internacional, hizo el programa CyberStart como una actividad extracurricular, junto con el consejo estudiantil, Esports, fútbol soccer y el programa de mentores Best Buddies de la escuela.
 
“Me sentí muy emocionada porque no estaba muy segura de cómo empezar en la tecnología”, dijo Osteguin. “Estoy interesada en todo lo relacionado a informática o tecnología porque creo que es fascinante para mí cómo podemos crear algo que pueda contribuir tanto. Estoy muy emocionada por esta beca para poder aprender más”.
 
La Academia ofrece capacitación en computadoras y datos, sistemas operativos, redes y nube, programación y conceptos de seguridad. 
 
Gentile, un estudiante que entrará al último año en CAST Tech, ingresó al programa CyberStart a través de su clase de Ciencias de la Computación AP. 
 
“Tengo una gran fascinación por la programación”, dijo. 
 
Está interesado en asistir a UTSA para estudiar Ciberseguridad o asistir a la Academia de la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos, Gentile espera emprender en Ciberseguridad o establecer conexiones. 
 
“Quiero aplicar el conocimiento y las habilidades que me enseñaron para retribuir a los demás”, dijo.
 
Williams, también una estudiante de último año ha estado involucrada en CyberStart desde noveno grado y dice que recomienda mucho el programa.
 
“Incluso si no están interesados en ejercer ciberseguridad, es muy importante conocer los conceptos básicos”, dijo Williams.
 
Los tres estudiantes dan crédito a sus maestros por presentarles esta oportunidad. Osteguin dijo que solo tuvo unos cuantos días de clase de computación este año antes de que un conflicto de horarios la obligara a cambiar de clase, pero el maestro de Educación Técnica y Profesional Pete Barcenez la alentó a seguir con CyberStart en su tiempo libre. 
 
Williams y Gentile dijeron que sus instructores también fueron clave para llevarlos a este punto. 
 
“Un montón de oportunidades que tuve, nunca las hubiera tenido si no hubiera asistido a CAST Tech”, dijo Williams. “Los maestros son increíbles. Ellos van más allá de sus responsabilidades por sus estudiantes y en motivar a los demás".
