The first day of school for most San Antonio ISD campuses is on Aug. 15. As we get close to the start of school, a group of committed staff at Douglass Elementary made sure their students and families were prepared by visiting the homes of all their students – more than 150 families – last week.

The visits, an annual occurrence for the last eight years, were the vision of principal Dr. Stephanie Ratliff when she came to the campus.

“I started the home visits as a way for families, students included, to see and know I am there for them. I am going to always be there, judgement-free, for them and our kids,” Ratliff said. “I really just wanted the families to get to know me and I wanted to get to know them where they are the most comfortable. I didn't want families to feel like the only place they would see me was at school.”

The team of four — Ratliff, assistant principal and parent Laura Servin, instructional coach Laura Estrada, and instructional assistant and parent Stella Tijerina — traversed the area over four days, from the school’s neighborhood to Lytle, Converse, and the south and west sides of town – delivering books, markers, crayons, folders, paper and information on meet the teacher and after school care. 

“The interactions were amazing,” Tijerina said. “The students hugged us all and were excited to start school in a couple of weeks, and a lot of the kids wanted to tell us what they had been doing over the summer.”

The visits have become tradition at Douglass, with families even reaching out to the school to find out when the group would be coming by so as not to miss them.

“Last week the best part was families messaging us asking when we are coming, some even offering to make us food,” Ratliff said. “To my knowledge, when we started welcome back visits at Douglass, it was the first-time families were visited when it wasn't about attendance, discipline, or registration - it was just to say ‘Hi!’ and ‘We missed you.’”

For Tijerina, the visits were bittersweet – after 15 years, it was her first year not to be a parent of any students at Douglass. 

“I remember the first time I saw Dr. Ratliff and the team at the time show up to my front door,” she said. “At first, I thought why they are here, and it took a few years to get used to. Seeing Dr. Ratliff and the team made me feel like my kids mattered to the school and we felt welcomed and connected to Douglass. I think that the visits are important because they help create trusting relationships and connections.”

Las visitas, un hecho anual durante los últimos ocho años, fueron la visión de la directora, la Dra. Stephanie Ratliff, cuando llegó a la escuela.

“Comencé las visitas domiciliarias como una forma para que las familias, incluyendo los estudiantes, vieran y supieran que estoy ahí para ellos. Siempre estaré ahí, sin juzgar, para ellos y nuestros estudiantes”, dijo Ratliff. “Realmente solo quería que las familias me conocieran y quería conocerlos donde se sienten más cómodos. No quería que las familias sintieran que el único lugar donde me verían sería en la escuela”.

El equipo de cuatro — Ratliff, la subdirectora y madre Laura Servin, la entrenadora de instrucción Laura Estrada y la asistente de instrucción y madre Stella Tijerina — atravesó el área durante cuatro días, desde el vecindario de la escuela hasta Lytle, Converse y los lados sur y oeste de ciudad: entregaron libros, marcadores, crayones, carpetas, papel e información sobre conocer al maestro y cuidado después de la escuela. 

““Las interacciones fueron asombrosas”, dijo Tijerina. “Los estudiantes nos abrazaron a todos y estaban emocionados de comenzar la escuela en un par de semanas, y muchos de los niños querían contarnos qué habían estado haciendo durante el verano”.

Las visitas se han convertido en una tradición en Douglass, y las familias incluso se comunican con la escuela para saber cuándo vendría el grupo para no perdérselos.

“La semana pasada, la mejor parte fue que las familias nos enviaron mensajes preguntándonos cuándo vendríamos, algunos incluso se ofrecieron a prepararnos comida”, dijo Ratliff. “A mi conocimiento, cuando comenzamos las visitas de bienvenida en Douglass, fue la primera vez que se visitó a las familias cuando no se trataba de asistencia, disciplina o inscripción: era solo para decir '¡Hola!' y 'Los extrañamos'".

Para Tijerina, las visitas fueron agridulces: después de 15 años, era el primer año que no era madre de ningún estudiante en Douglass. 

“Recuerdo la primera vez que vi a la Dr. Ratliff y al equipo en ese momento aparecer en la puerta de mi casa”, dijo. “Al principio, pensé por qué estaban aquí, y me tomó algunos años acostumbrarme. Ver a la Dr. Ratliff y al equipo me hizo sentir que mis hijos eran importantes para la escuela y nos sentimos bienvenidos y conectados con Douglass. Creo que las visitas son importantes porque ayudan a crear relaciones y conexiones de confianza”.
