When you walk into the Young Men’s Leadership Academy, the history of the campus is impossible to miss. The main entrance foyer comes alive as images of legendary alumni of the historic Wheatley High School painted on the walls greet you. For YMLA students Jeremiah and Raishaun Conaway, that feeling hits close to home. Real close. Because they see family on those murals.
“We have a lot of family down the line that came to Wheatley, with names on plaques in the hallways from earlier generations, and I just hope that I can carry that on,” said senior Jeremiah Conaway.
“Seeing my aunts and great aunts, great grandpa, great grandmas on that wall, inspire me to do my best every day,” said junior Raishaun Conaway.
The Conaway brothers have been creating some history of their own this year. Both are members of the YMLA Lions football team. And both have been named the Jon Wayne High School Football Player of the Week, which is awarded to the top football player in the San Antonio area. Jeremiah won the honor in Week 2, while Raishaun was just named the winner for Week 4.
“They are a total package, the Conaways. They work off each other, they feed off each other’s energy,” said YMLA head football coach Tony Green. “They make a big impact for our YMLA Lions. We are off to our best start in our three years of football, and they are a big reason why.”
“A bunch of joy came all over me, just seeing that Raishaun got the ‘Player of the Week’,” said Jeremiah. “I am very proud of him because he is my little brother, and he is just doing bigger things.”
“I was very proud of him when he won. First one in YMLA history,” said Raishaun. “Jeremiah has been underrated his whole life, so there’s a lot more to come.”
Brotherly love does not mean there is no sibling rivalry. The Conaway brothers have been fiercely competitive with each other since their days of AAU Track.
“That’s when the competition took off because we pretty much ran in the same events,” Jeremiah said.
“We both were ranked #1 in Texas for the hurdles,” said Raishaun. “Going to Nationals every year, competing against each other, it’s still fun to this day.
Both Conaways are honor roll students. The big question is, who’s the better athlete?
“I say me, because I’m more versatile than he is,” Jeremiah said with a smile.
“No, I’m way better,” Raishaun chimed in laughing.
What the brothers agree on is that YMLA was the best choice they made a few years ago when deciding where they should attend middle school and high school.
“It was just one of the better schools that was coming up on the rise, and our parents felt that was the place for us to be. They were right,” said Jeremiah. “Since I’ve been here, we’ve always had good teachers who are very encouraging, and then they also connect to your personal life. They actually try to get to know you on a personal level to make you feel more comfortable with them.”
“The staff is incredible, and so is the community. They all love you and try their best to help us students in all that we do,” Raishaun said. “Love this family. So glad to be here. Everybody is in tune with each other.”
Who knows? Maybe one day when the Conaway brothers return to their historic campus in the future, they will see their names added to the list of illustrious graduates that decorate the YMLA walls.
“I hope that I do enough and contribute enough to the school where my legacy can be continued here,” said Jeremiah. “What makes me most proud is where I started. Allowing me to build the foundation as a student at Highland Hills Elementary, building me up to who I am today because of the growth that I’ve had during my time at SAISD.”

Al entrar en la Young Men's Leadership Academy, es imposible pasar por alto la historia de la escuela. El vestíbulo de la entrada principal cobra vida cuando las imágenes de antiguos estudiantes legendarios de la histórica escuela Wheatley High School pintadas en las paredes te dan la bienvenida. Para Jeremiah y Raishaun Conaway, estudiantes de YMLA, ese sentimiento es muy familiar. Muy cerca. Porque ven familia en esos murales.
"Tenemos mucha familia que vino a Wheatley, con nombres en las placas de los pasillos de generaciones anteriores, y espero poder continuar con eso", dijo Jeremiah Conaway.

Los hermanos Conaway han hecho historia este año. Ambos son miembros del equipo de fútbol americano YMLA Lions. Y ambos han sido nombrados Jugador de Fútbol de la Semana de la escuela Jon Wayne High School, que se concede al mejor jugador de fútbol de la zona de San Antonio. Jeremiah obtuvo el galardón en la 2ª semana, mientras que Raishaun acaba de ser nombrado ganador de la 4ª semana.
"Los Conaway son un paquete completo. Trabajan unos con otros, se alimentan mutuamente de su energía", dijo el entrenador de fútbol del YMLA, Tony Green. "Tienen un gran impacto para nuestros YMLA Lions. Hemos tenido el mejor comienzo en nuestros tres años de fútbol, y ellos son una de las principales razones".
"Me causo mucha alegría sólo de ver que Raishaun había conseguido ser nombrado el 'Jugador de la Semana'", dijo Jeremiah. "Estoy muy orgulloso de él porque es mi hermano menor, y está haciendo cosas más grandes".
"Me sentí muy orgulloso de él cuando ganó. El primero en la historia de YMLA", dijo Raishaun. "Jeremiah ha sido infravalorado toda su vida, así que hay mucho más por venir".
El amor fraternal no significa que no haya rivalidad entre hermanos. Los hermanos Conaway han sido ferozmente competitivos entre sí desde sus días de atletismo AAU.
"Fue entonces cuando la competición despegó, porque corríamos más o menos en los mismos eventos", dijo Jeremiah. "Los dos estábamos clasificados como número 1 de Texas en obstáculos", dijo Raishaun. "Ir a los Nacionales cada año, competir entre nosotros, sigue siendo divertido hasta el día de hoy.
Ambos Conaways son estudiantes de cuadro de honor. La gran pregunta es: ¿quién es mejor atleta?
"Digo yo, porque soy más versátil que él", dijo Jeremiah con una sonrisa.
“No, yo soy mucho mejor", dijo Raishaun riendo.
En lo que los hermanos están de acuerdo es en que YMLA fue la mejor elección que hicieron hace unos años cuando decidieron dónde cursar sus estudios de secundaria y preparatoria.
"Era una de las mejores escuelas que estaba en crecimiento, y nuestros padres pensaron que era el lugar donde debíamos estar. Tenían razón", dijo Jeremiah. "Desde que estoy aquí, siempre hemos tenido buenos profesores que te animan mucho, y luego también conectan con tu vida personal. De hecho, intentan conocerte a nivel personal para que te sientas más cómodo con ellos".
"El personal es increíble, y la comunidad también. Todos te quieren y se esfuerzan al máximo por ayudarnos a los estudiantes en todo lo que hacemos", dijo Raishaun. "Me encanta esta familia. Me alegro de estar aquí. Todo el mundo está en sintonía".
¿Quién sabe? Quizá algún día, cuando los hermanos Conaway regresen a su histórica escuela en el futuro, vean sus nombres añadidos a la lista de ilustres graduados que decoran las paredes del YMLA.
"Espero hacer lo suficiente y contribuir lo suficiente a la escuela para que mi legado pueda continuar aquí", dijo Jeremiah. "Lo que más me enorgullece es dónde empecé. Permitiéndome construir los cimientos como estudiante en Highland Hills Elementary, construyéndome a quien soy hoy debido al crecimiento que he tenido durante mi tiempo en SAISD."
