Thirteen-year-old Bryssa Sauz, who is an Honor Roll student at Irving Dual Language Academy, was recently recognized by the SAISD Information Technology department as the middle school 1st place winner in the district cybersecurity poster contest. October is National Cybersecurity Month, and the theme of this year’s contest is “Be the Shield.”
“These student-created images empower our students to take ownership of their own cyber safety and recognizes SAISD’s efforts to promote cybersecurity education,” said SAISD Chief Information Technology Officer Eva Mendoza.
Bryssa won a $50 gift card for her poster that depicted an army of computer viruses attacking a community of citizens and their computers.
“First, I imagined the shield. You know, to protect the computer and passwords,” Bryssa said. “Then I started working on the viruses. It reminded me of COVID because of how fast it spreads. Then the people were there fighting to protect against the viruses.”
Relating computer viruses to biological viruses may have come easy to this 8th grader.
Bryssa is interested in what is inside the human body (gory movies don’t scare her) and she says becoming a surgeon is on her list of what she may want to pursue as a future career.
“The best way to see the human body on the inside is in surgery,” Bryssa said. “I want to make the patients feel better.”
For now, she is happy to earn high grades in math and to discuss life in reading class.

Bryssa Sauz, de trece años, estudiante de la Lista de Honor en Irving Dual Language Academy, fue reconocida recientemente por el Departamento de Tecnología Informática de SAISD como la ganadora del primer lugar de la escuela secundaria en el concurso de carteles de ciberseguridad del distrito. Octubre es el Mes Nacional de la Ciberseguridad, y el tema del concurso de este año es "Sé el escudo".
"Estas imágenes creadas por los estudiantes les permiten responsabilizarse de su propia seguridad cibernética y reconocen los esfuerzos de SAISD para promover la educación en ciberseguridad", dijo Eva Mendoza, Directora del Departamento de Tecnología Informática de SAISD.
Bryssa ganó una tarjeta de 50 dólares por su cartel, que representaba un ejército de virus informáticos atacando a una comunidad de ciudadanos y sus computadoras.
"Primero, imaginé el escudo. Ya sabes, para proteger la computadora y las contraseñas", dijo Bryssa. "Entonces empecé a trabajar en los virus. Me recordó al COVID por lo rápido que se propaga. Entonces la gente estaba allí luchando para protegerse de los virus".
Relacionar los virus informáticos con los biológicos puede haber resultado fácil para esta estudiante de octavo grado.
A Bryssa le interesa lo que hay dentro del cuerpo humano (las películas sangrientas no le asustan) y dice que convertirse en cirujana está en su lista de carreras futuras.
"La mejor forma de ver el cuerpo humano por dentro es en cirugía", dice Bryssa. "Quiero que los pacientes se sientan mejor".
Por ahora, es feliz sacando buenas notas en matemáticas y discutiendo sobre la vida en clase de lectura.
"Irving es un lugar donde los maestros nos ayudan a ser creativos. Me hace feliz que cada día aprendamos cosas nuevas y seamos más listos", afirma Bryssa.
