Dr. John Davila, Spanish teacher at three International Baccalaureate elementary schools, has published a bilingual collection of poems. 

“De sol a rojo sol”/”From Sun to Red Sun,” Davila’s first published book, was released Sept. 15. 

The Burbank alumnus has been teaching Spanish to grades kinder through 5 in SAISD for four years. He splits his time between Briscoe, Huppertz, and Woodlawn Hills elementary schools, and loves watching students’ passion for Spanish grow.

“My favorite thing about teaching is to see a student's interest show the faintest hint of someday becoming a passion,” Davila said. 

For Davila, whose first language is Spanish, the collection of poems came about organically, reflecting “the varied sentiments that can be felt in the passing of the sun from East to West.” He wrote the poems in Spanish first, and then translated his own manuscript into English. 

The experience of writing a book, he said, informs one’s teaching. 

“It gives the teacher another point of contact with the text or subject, another angle to look at the book and the original author from,” he said.

Un maestro de español publica un libro de poesía bilingüe

El Dr. John Davila, profesor de español en tres centros de primaria del Bachillerato Internacional, ha publicado una colección bilingüe de poemas. 

"De sol a rojo sol", el primer libro publicado por Dávila, salió a la venta el 15 de septiembre. 

 El antiguo estudiante de Burbank lleva cuatro años enseñando español en los cursos de kinder a 5º de SAISD. Divide su tiempo entre las escuelas primarias de Briscoe, Huppertz y Woodlawn Hills, y le encanta ver cómo crece la pasión de los estudiantes por el español.

"Lo que más me gusta de la enseñanza es ver que el interés de un estudiante muestra el más leve indicio de convertirse algún día en una pasión", dice Dávila. 

Para Dávila, cuya primera lengua es el español, la colección de poemas surgió de forma orgánica, reflejando "los variados sentimientos que se pueden sentir en el paso del sol de Este a Oeste". Primero escribió los poemas en español y luego tradujo su propio manuscrito al inglés. 

La experiencia de escribir un libro dijo, informa sobre la propia enseñanza. 

"Ofrece al profesor otro punto de contacto con el texto o el tema, otro ángulo desde el que mirar el libro y al autor original", afirma.
