Spanish teacher publishes bilingual poetry book

Dr. Davila, author of poetry bookDr. John Davila, Spanish teacher at three International Baccalaureate elementary schools, has published a bilingual collection of poems.

“De sol a rojo sol”/”From Sun to Red Sun,” Davila’s first published book, was released Sept. 15.

The Burbank alumnus has been teaching Spanish to grades kinder through 5 in SAISD for four years. He splits his time between Briscoe, Huppertz, and Woodlawn Hills elementary schools, and loves watching students’ passion for Spanish grow.

“My favorite thing about teaching is to see a student's interest show the faintest hint of someday becoming a passion,” Davila said.

For Davila, whose first language is Spanish, the collection of poems came about organically, reflecting “the varied sentiments that can be felt in the passing of the sun from East to West.” He wrote the poems in Spanish first, and then translated his own manuscript into English.

The experience of writing a book, he said, informs one’s teaching.

“It gives the teacher another point of contact with the text or subject, another angle to look at the book and the original author from,” he said.

“De sol a rojo sol” is available on Amazon.
