Travis Early College High School senior Dakota Osife has spent most of her life proudly and publicly sharing her Native American heritage through dance and other cultural activities. An enrolled member of the Navajo/Diné Nation, she is also a committee member of the local organization United San Antonio Powwow.
Identifying as Navajo and Mexican, Dakota says exhibiting her Indigenous culture at local events makes her feel whole.
“I feel proud,” she said. “Here in San Antonio, there is predominantly Hispanic culture, so displaying my Indigenous roots and connecting my two worlds together, I feel is very important.”
Over the years she’s had a lot of support from her SAISD family. Anna Ramos, Dakota’s fourth grade teacher from Arnold Elementary, drove all the way to Laredo to support Dakota at her first Princess crowning ceremony, something that really impacted her entire family.
“As a mom, you love it when teachers love your kids as much as you do,” Dakota’s mom Jennifer Osife said. “It makes your heart happy.”
When Dakota was a student at Arnold she became the first Native American youth ambassador to the Briscoe Western Art Museum. Later, while a student at Whittier Middle School, sixth grade world cultures teacher Sarah Carrola also began attending Dakota’s powwows.
Last spring, Dakota and her parents returned to Whittier for the school’s cultural night, where she and her family displayed traditional dances used at powwows.
Other teachers in Dakota’s path at both Whittier and Travis have encouraged her academic excellence, as she prepares to take the next steps in her academic career.
Dakota, a College Board Class of 2023 National Indigenous Recognition Awardee, is also a member of the National Honor Society, the National Hispanic Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta at Travis, as well as the Honors Academy and Phi Theta Kappa at San Antonio College. Dakota plans to attend the University of Texas Austin and major in Mathematics and Finance.
“My ultimate goal is to be able to give back by teaching Financial Literacy in Native, Indigenous and Latino communities,” Dakota said.

Dakota Osife, estudiante de último curso del Travis Early College High School, ha pasado la mayor parte de su vida compartiendo orgullosa y públicamente su herencia nativa americana a través de la danza y otras actividades culturales. Como integrante de la Nación Navajo/Diné, también es integrante del comité de la organización local United San Antonio Powwow.
Dakota, que se identifica como navajo y mexicana, afirma que exhibir su cultura indígena en actos locales la hace sentirse completa.
"Me siento orgullosa", dijo. "Aquí en San Antonio predomina la cultura hispana, así que mostrar mis raíces indígenas y conectar mis dos mundos, me parece muy importante".
A lo largo de los años ha recibido mucho apoyo de su familia de SAISD. Anna Ramos, maestra de cuarto grado de Dakota en la escuela Arnold Elementary, condujo hasta Laredo para apoyar a Dakota en su primera ceremonia de coronación de princesa, algo que realmente impactó a toda su familia.

Cuando Dakota estudiaba en Arnold se convirtió en la primera joven nativa americana embajadora del Briscoe Western Art Museum. Más tarde, mientras estudiaba en la escuela Whittier Middle School, Sarah Carrola, maestra de culturas del mundo de sexto curso, también empezó a asistir a los powwows de Dakota.
La primavera pasada, Dakota y sus padres volvieron a Whittier para asistir a la noche cultural de la escuela, donde ella y su familia exhibieron danzas tradicionales utilizadas en los powwows.
Otros maestros en la trayectoria de Dakota, tanto en Whittier como en Travis, han alentado su excelencia académica, mientras se prepara para dar los siguientes pasos en su carrera académica.
Dakota, galardonada con el Premio Nacional de Reconocimiento Indígena de la Clase 2023 del College Board, también es integrante de la Sociedad Nacional de Honor, la Sociedad Nacional de Honor Hispana y Mu Alpha Theta en Travis, así como de la Academia de Honores y Phi Theta Kappa en San Antonio College. Dakota tiene previsto estudiar Matemáticas y Finanzas en la Universidad de Texas en Austin.
"Mi objetivo final es poder retribuir enseñando cultura financiera en comunidades nativas, indígenas y latinas", afirma Dakota.
