Third and fourth grade students at Huppertz Elementary School are showing off a new accessory and feeling a little better about going to a new campus next school year. This comes after their fellow International Baccalaureate students at Woodlawn Hills Elementary School created and delivered personalized keychains to them on Thursday, Dec. 14.
The keychains were meant as tokens of caring to ease the fears of the Huppertz students who will start at new schools next fall. The SAISD Board of Trustees approved the closure of the Huppertz facility in November as part of the district’s rightsizing effort. Next school year, Huppertz students have the opportunity to continue their IB education at Woodlawn Hills or Fenwick Academy.
The students loved the surprise, and the teachers were so touched by the heartfelt gifts that several cried, said Huppertz IB Coordinator Danielle Courchesne. By the following day, Huppertz students could be seen wearing the keychains on their lanyards and as bracelets.
“I think it was so nice of them and I do feel welcome,” said Huppertz student Abcde Cantu.
Making the keychains was absolutely a heartfelt effort, said Woodlawn Hills teacher Taryn Arevalos whose third and fourth grade students were busy earlier in the week with the project. With concern on their faces and filled with a depth of sincerity only children can reach, they thoughtfully strung colored and letter beads onto lacing.
“I really hope this makes them feel better about moving,” said Woodlawn Hills student Issac Hernandez.
The idea for the project came about when a group of Woodlawn Hills teachers wondered what they could do to make the Huppertz to Woodlawn Hills transition easier for students.
“I’m a Taylor Swift fan,” said Arevalos, “and there is this thing they (Taylor Swift fans) do at concerts. They exchange friendship bracelets. I thought we could do that.”
The idea eventually evolved into a plan to make keychains to eliminate the possibility that the bracelets would be either too big or small, and for the exchange to be between the schools’ third and fourth grades, Arevalos said.
To make the keychains extra special, they included the name of each student.
“The idea was to personalize them, to make them feel like each individual student is important to us,” Arevalos said.
For her students, it was this personalization, knowing that they were making something for a real person that they might call friend next year, that increased the importance and participation in the project.
As each name was handed out, each student said it aloud to the whole class and began imagining what a child with that name could be like in an effort to make the keychain “just right.”
“I got Maximillian,” said one student with a flare in his voice. “I got Vanellope! Like in Wreck It Ralph! I’m going to use all clear pinks for her,” said student Jude Palmer. Student Jelena Acevedo received the name Augustine and picked an ombré of blues. “I just feel like it would fit them,” she said.

Los alumnos de tercero y cuarto curso de Huppertz Elementary Schoollucen un nuevo accesorio y ya se sienten un poco mejor al ir a un nuevo campus el próximo curso escolar. Esto se produce después de que sus compañeros estudiantes del Bachillerato Internacional de Woodlawn Hills Elementary School crearan y les entregaran llaveros personalizados el jueves 14 de diciembre.
Los llaveros fueron pensados como muestras de cariño para calmar los temores de los alumnos de Huppertz que empezarán en nuevas escuelas el próximo otoño. La Junta Directiva de SAISD aprobó en noviembre el cierre de las instalaciones de Huppertz como parte del esfuerzo de la optimización de planteles del distrito. El próximo año escolar, los alumnos de Huppertz tendrán la oportunidad de continuar su educación IB en Woodlawn Hills o Fenwick Academy.
A los alumnos les encantó la sorpresa, y los profesores se sintieron tan conmovidos por los sinceros regalos que varios lloraron, dijo Danielle Courchesne, coordinadora de BI de Huppertz. Al día siguiente, se podía ver a los alumnos de Huppertz llevando los llaveros en sus cordones y como pulseras.
"Creo que han sido muy amables y me siento bienvenida", dijo la estudiante de Huppertz Abcde Cantu.
Hacer los llaveros fue un gran esfuerzo, dijo la maestra de Woodlawn Hills, Taryn Arévalos, cuyos estudiantes de tercer y cuarto grado estuvieron ocupados a principios de semana con el proyecto. Con preocupación en sus rostros y llenos de una profundidad de sinceridad que solo los niños pueden alcanzar, colocaron cuidadosamente cuentas de colores y letras en los cordones.
“Realmente espero que esto los haga sentir mejor al mudarse”, dijo Issac Hernandez, estudiante de Woodlawn Hills.
La idea del proyecto surgió cuando un grupo de maestros de Woodlawn Hills se preguntaron qué podían hacer para facilitar la transición de Huppertz a Woodlawn Hills para los estudiantes.
“Soy fan de Taylor Swift”, dijo Arévalos, “y hay algo que ellos (los fans de Taylor Swift) hacen en los conciertos. Ellos intercambian pulseras de amistad. Pensé que podríamos hacer lo mismo”.
La idea eventualmente evolucionó hacia un plan para hacer llaveros para eliminar la posibilidad de que las pulseras fueran demasiado grandes o pequeñas, y que el intercambio fuera entre el tercer y cuarto grado de las escuelas, dijo Arévalos.
Para que los llaveros fueran aún más especiales, incluían el nombre de cada estudiante.
“La idea era personalizarlos, hacerlos sentir que cada estudiante es importante para nosotros”, dijo Arévalos.
Para sus alumnos, fue esta personalización, sabiendo que estaban haciendo algo para una persona real a la que podrían llamar amigo el próximo año, lo que aumentó la importancia y la participación en el proyecto.
