With the coming closure of Huppertz Elementary School, new teacher Janelli Rodriguez is following her students' lead and choosing to be a risk-taker as she continues as an International Baccalaureate teacher.
Just out of college, Rodriguez started her teaching career in August 2022 as a first-grade teacher at Huppertz Elementary, an International Baccalaureate World School. Now, just months into her second year at the campus, she has learned that it will close with the end of the school year as part of the district’s efforts to consolidate schools to match enrollment.
Although she had wanted to remain at the same campus throughout her career, it was her own students who reminded her that fear may not be the best response to the move.
In comforting her students about the campus closure, Rodriguez had reminded them that as IB students they are called to be risk-takers and that many of their Huppertz friends may be moving to the same new IB campuses with them.
Rodriguez asked her class to consider, “What if you make all these new friends along with all the friends you still have?”
“I had my students telling me, ‘I’m going to be a risk-taker,’” Rodriguez said.
It occurred to her that she should do the same.
Her revelation was similar to the one she had at the end of her first year of teaching. At that time, fellow Huppertz teacher Brenda Sanchez had consoled Rodriguez who, as a new teacher, felt a sense of loss over her first cohort of students moving on to the next grade.
“I felt like, how am I going to make them (new students) fall in love with me and laugh at my jokes,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez remembered that Sanchez assured her that while each class and year would be different, she would bond with each new set of students.
Rodriguez said that Sanchez reminded her, “As cheesy as it sounds,” there are kids everywhere that need her attention.
Taking this to heart, Rodriguez accepted a teaching position with Fenwick Academy, another IB World School within SAISD, where she could continue to put her professional development to use. During her first year of teaching, Rodriguez had attended many IB professional development classes as well as the International Baccalaureate Global Conference.
“I love the IB,” she said. “I saw the connection between the way we teach in IB and the way the kids make connections. My mind was blown.”
“I’m very happy,” she said about her new role at Fenwick.

Con el próximo cierre de la Escuela Primaria Huppertz, la nueva maestra Janelli Rodríguez sigue el ejemplo de sus alumnos y elige tomar riesgos mientras continúa como maestra de Bachillerato Internacional.
Recién graduada de la universidad, Rodríguez comenzó su carrera como maestra de primer grado en Huppertz Elementary, una Escuela Mundial de Bachillerato Internacional (IB por sus siglas en inglés) en agosto de 2022. ?Ahora, a solo a meses de haber empezado su segundo año como profesora, se ha enterado de que la escuela cerrará con el fin del año escolar como parte de los esfuerzos del distrito para la optimización de planteles para que coincida con la matrícula.
Aunque había querido permanecer en el mismo campus durante toda su carrera, fueron sus propios estudiantes quienes le recordaron que el miedo puede no ser la mejor respuesta a la mudanza.
Al consolar a sus alumnos por el cierre del campus, Rodríguez les recordó que, como alumnos del IB están llamados a tomar riesgos y que muchos de sus amigos de Huppertz pueden mudarse a los mismos nuevos campus del IB con ellos.
Rodríguez le pidió a su clase que consideraran: "¿Qué pasaría si aunado a los amigos que ya tienen, hacen nuevos amigos?"
"Mis estudiantes me decían: 'Voy a ser una persona que toma riesgos'", dijo Rodríguez.
Se le ocurrió que ella debería hacer lo mismo.
Su revelación fue similar a la que tuvo al final de su primer año de enseñanza. ?En ese momento, su compañera Brenda Sánchez, maestra de Huppertz, había consolado a Rodríguez, quien, como nueva maestra, sintió una sensación de pérdida por su primera cohorte de estudiantes que pasaban al siguiente grado.
"Me sentí como, ¿cómo voy a hacer que ellos (los nuevos estudiantes) se enamoren de mí y se rían de mis chistes?", dijo Rodríguez.
Rodríguez recordó que Sánchez le aseguró que, si bien cada clase y año serían diferentes, ella se vincularía con cada nuevo grupo de estudiantes.
Rodríguez dijo que Sánchez le recordó: "Por cursi que suene", hay niños en todas partes que necesitan su atención.
Tomando esto en serio, Rodríguez aceptó un puesto de profesora en Fenwick Academy, otra Escuela Mundial de Bachillerato Internacional dentro de SAISD, donde pudo seguir poniendo en práctica su desarrollo profesional. Durante su primer año como docente, Rodríguez asistió a muchas clases de desarrollo profesional del IB, así como a la Conferencia Global del Bachillerato Internacional.
"Me encanta el IB", dijo. "Vi la conexión entre la forma en que enseñamos en el IB y la forma en que los niños establecen conexiones. Quedé alucinada".
"Estoy muy feliz", dijo sobre su nueva función en Fenwick.
