Let’s establish this from the start: some high school students DO think math is cool.
“Solving equations and getting to know more about how stuff works makes me feel cooler,” said Jefferson High School student Greko Bazana Enrique.
“I do enjoy doing math,” agrees Jefferson classmate Katarina Longoria. “When I am doing the work, I find myself loving the problem solving. It’s what I am best at.”
When Katarina and Greko earned phenomenal math scores on their SAT exams, the school’s academic dean of mathematics Bernadette Fulghum offered the two seniors paid tutor positions. Both started working as math tutors on campus in December. At first the pair, who are also members of the Jefferson High School Mariachi “Los Potrillos”, were unsure about the idea.
“I had never been a tutor. I do teach my peers in mariachi, but never officially as a tutor,” said Greko. “It was a little scary, but I wanted the experience.”
Both students have already seen personal growth since they began their math tutoring positions.
“The first day I was with algebra kids, and I was thinking ‘what do I do?’,” said Katarina. “I was nervous.”
But confidence set in after prepping the students for an upcoming test.
“We worked hard to get them prepared. And they all passed,” Katarina said.
“I feel good because I am getting better at teaching,” said Greko. “I notice that when I try new things, and they work, it boosts my confidence a lot.”
And the feeling when that first paycheck hit?
“I just opened my bank account and saw money there. That was a good feeling,” said Greko.
“This is my first job ever. So, I was very excited because this is the first time I made money,” said Katarina.
The best feeling of all: knowing they are lending a hand to their peers.
Just like family is supposed to.
“I do feel very proud with what I’m doing by helping my classmates,” said Greko.
“I love that students ask me questions,” said Katarina. “They are my friends, so that makes them my family. It feels great to know I am helping them.”

Establezcamos esto desde un principio: algunos estudiantes Sí piensan que las matemáticas son geniales.
“Resolver ecuaciones y conocer más sobre cómo funcionan las cosas me hace sentir más genial”, dijo Greko Bazana Enrique, estudiante de Jefferson High School.
“Disfruto mucho las matemáticas”, coincide Katarina Longoria, compañera de clase de Jefferson. “Cuando hago el trabajo, me encanta resolver problemas. Es lo que hago mejor”.
Cuando Katarina y Greko obtuvieron puntuaciones fenomenales en matemáticas en sus exámenes de SAT, la decana académica de matemáticas de la escuela, Bernadette Fulghum, les ofreció a los dos estudiantes del último año puestos de tutores remunerados. Ambos comenzaron a trabajar como tutores de matemáticas en el campus en diciembre. Al principio el dúo, los cuales también son miembros del Mariachi “Los Potrillos” de Jefferson High School, no estaban seguros de la idea.
"Nunca había sido tutor. Enseño mariachi a mis compañeros, pero nunca oficialmente como tutor”, dijo Greko. "Me dio un poco de miedo, pero quería vivir la experiencia".
Ambos estudiantes ya han visto un crecimiento personal desde que comenzaron sus puestos de tutoría de matemáticas.
“El primer día estaba con niños de álgebra y pensé: “¿Qué hago?”, dijo Katarina. "Estaba nerviosa."
Pero tuve la confianza suficiente después de preparar a los estudiantes para un examen.
“Trabajamos duro para prepararlos. Y todos pasaron”, dijo Katarina.
“Me siento bien porque estoy mejorando en la enseñanza”, dijo Greko. “Noto que cuando intento algo nuevo y funciona, mi confianza aumenta mucho”.
¿Y la sensación cuando llegó ese primer cheque de pago?
“Acabo de abrir mi cuenta bancaria y vi dinero allí. Fue una buena sensación”, dijo Greko.
“Este es mi primer trabajo. Entonces estaba muy emocionada porque es la primera vez que gano dinero”, dijo Katarina.
La mejor sensación de todas: saber que están ayudando a sus compañeros.
Como se supone que debe hacer la familia.
“Me siento muy orgulloso de lo que estoy haciendo al ayudar a mis compañeros de clase”, dijo Greko.
Me encanta que los estudiantes me hagan preguntas”, dijo Katarina. "Son mis amigos, así que eso los convierte en mi familia. Es fantástico saber que los estoy ayudando”.
