In keeping with its commitment to the San Antonio community and to ensure the continued positive impact of closed facilities, San Antonio ISD convened the inaugural meeting of the Facilities Repurposing Panel on Jan. 29, 2024, at SAISD Central Office. The panel comprises individuals across all single-member districts within the district’s boundaries, including SAISD parents, caregivers, and staff; community organizers; city employees; and others who were nominated or self-identified.
“I thank you for accepting the invitation to be part of this effort,” said Jaime Aquino, SAISD superintendent, as he welcomed the group. “SAISD Is responsible for 45,000 students, and I believe this should be a collective responsibility for the entire community. Therefore, we are so grateful you want to partner with us as we can continue to lift the lives of our children.”
The meeting was organized as a design incubator aimed at shaping the work the panel members will be implementing over the next few months. Participants also reviewed the panel’s charter and role.
“I am a product of SAISD, and traditionally, I have been involved in planning and reuse for more than 40 years in our community,” said panel member Renee Watson. “I wanted to be involved in this process based on the incredible amount of experience I have had in my profession and because I want to see that we have thriving communities and neighborhoods.”
SAISD's proactive approach aims to repurpose campuses affected by rightsizing, ensuring that the buildings remain valuable community assets. The district has made it clear that none of the facilities will be sold; instead, SAISD will partner with businesses, community members, and non-profits to ensure the buildings are repurposed in a way that will benefit the surrounding neighborhood. The organizations selected to lease the buildings will be responsible for their maintenance while providing essential services to the surrounding neighborhoods.
Several entities have already expressed interest in collaborating with SAISD to repurpose some of the buildings, showcasing a shared commitment to community well-being.
“I hope that this process serves what the district promised and that it serves students’ education needs, including teachers and their needs, while respecting the communities where these facilities are located,” said Melissa Stendahl, panel member and parent of a student affected by rightsizing. "This panel includes a variety of representation from different neighborhoods, skill sets, and backgrounds, which is key to have.”
The Facility Repurposing Panel will play a pivotal role in guiding the comprehensive facility repurposing process. One of the panel's responsibilities will be collaborating with the district to issue Requests for Proposals (RFP). This RFP process will invite proposals from external entities interested in presenting their repurposing concepts.
Additionally, as part of its community-oriented approach, the panel has been tasked with scheduling community engagement events, specifically around identified campuses. These meetings will provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss the proposals and ensure that the repurposing aligns with the needs and values of their individual communities.
The Facility Repurposing Panel is a subcommittee of the Always Learning Children’s Cabinet and includes members of the Superintendent’s Growth and Development Committee. The overarching goal of the panel is to honor the rich history of the schools, pay tribute to the legacy of historical figures for whom they are named, and preserve the memories of the students and families who have been an integral part of these educational institutions.
