“I love kids, you know? This is what I’m here for.”

W.C. Fields once famously said actors shouldn’t work with kids or animals because they always steal the spotlight. SAISD K-9 Police Officer Martin Rosa disagrees.
“I love kids, you know? This is what I’m here for,” said Rosa. “And as for working with Blue, I saw the opportunity pop up, and I told myself I couldn’t let it pass me by.”
“Blue” (which is an acronym for “Bonding, Listening, Understanding, Everyone”) is a therapy dog, and the newest member of the SAISD Police Department Care Team. Rosa calls his yellow labrador retriever a gentle giant that is perfect for the job.
“He’s huge. But he thinks he’s a chihuahua. He wants to jump on your lap,” said Rosa, who is proud of the district’s police department for bringing Blue’s superpowers to children.
Blue is especially good with kids, particularly when they need comfort or feel stressed.
“Sometimes they just need somebody to talk to. Having a therapy dog there, you’d be surprised how much they open up,” said Rosa. “He’s calm. He’s loving, and he’s perfect. Blue is here to help anyone going through hard times.”
Rosa acknowledges that encouragement can come from teachers, too. He attended SAISD as a student and credits Burbank High School Criminal Justice teacher Javier Moreno for encouraging him to become a police officer.
Rosa has worked eight years in the district – six years on the police force, and two years of working on the grounds crew before that. There was a brief period when Rosa left the district to join a city police force. That separation didn’t last long.
“I missed the kids. I wanted to come back,” Rosa said.
Rosa says the work is rewarding, and the connections he and Blue cultivate with students make a difference.
“I work with kids who live in the same neighborhood I did. They tell me, ‘You don’t know what we’re going through’. Actually, I do. Because I was here,” said Rosa. “This is what I wanted to do, and I got it. I reached my goal.”

W.C. Fields dijo una vez que los actores no deberían trabajar con niños o animales porque siempre se roban el centro de atención. El oficial de policía K-9 de SAISD, Martin Rosa, no está de acuerdo.
"Me encantan los niños, ¿sabes? Por eso estoy aquí", dijo Rosa. "Y en cuanto a trabajar con Blue, vi surgir la oportunidad y me dije a mí mismo que no podía dejarla pasar".
"Blue" (que es un acrónimo de "Bonding, Listening, Understanding, Everyone") es un perro de terapia y el miembro más nuevo del Equipo de Atención del Departamento de Policía de SAISD. Rosa llama a su labrador retriever amarillo un gigante amable que es perfecto para el trabajo.
"Es enorme. Pero él cree que es un chihuahua. Quiere saltar sobre tu regazo", dijo Rosa, quien está orgulloso del departamento de policía del distrito por llevar los superpoderes de Blue a los niños.
Blue es especialmente bueno con los niños, sobre todo cuando necesitan consuelo o se sienten estresados.
"A veces solo necesitan a alguien con quien hablar. Te sorprendería lo mucho que se abren, al tener allí un perro de terapia", dijo Rosa. "Es calmado. Es cariñoso y es perfecto. Blue está aquí para ayudar a cualquiera que esté pasando por momentos difíciles".
Rosa reconoce que el estímulo también puede venir de los maestros. Asistió a SAISD como estudiante y le da crédito al maestro de justicia penal de Burbank High School, Javier Moreno, por alentarlo a convertirse en un oficial de policía.
Rosa ha trabajado ocho años en el distrito: seis años en la fuerza policial y antes de eso dos años como encargado de jardinería. Hubo un breve período en el que Rosa abandonó el distrito para unirse a la fuerza policial de la ciudad. Esa separación no duró mucho.
"Extrañaba a los niños. Quería volver", dijo Rosa.
Rosa dice que el trabajo es gratificante y que las conexiones que él y Blue cultivan con los estudiantes hacen la diferencia.
"Trabajo con niños que viven en el mismo vecindario que yo. Me dicen: 'No sabes por lo que estamos pasando'. De hecho, sí lo sé. Porque yo estuve aquí", dijo Rosa. "Esto es lo que quería hacer, y lo conseguí. Alcancé mi objetivo".
