Hannah Esqueda can't oversell the importance of AVID. The first-year teacher at Fox Tech High School is a product of the program, having taken courses in the Advancement Via Individual Determination curriculum both at Whittier Middle School and Edison High School. 

“When I was in it, I was the one who would sit in the front,” Esqueda said. “I always had my binder. It was the most important thing to me besides my backpack. Because I was in AVID, I was better prepared with time management as well as being organized.”

Now she gets to teach those skills. The 2020 Edison alumna teaches AVID, Algebra II, and Algebraic Reasoning at Fox Tech. 

She fast-tracked her way through the University of the Incarnate Word, crediting the strategic planning exercises in the AVID curriculum with helping her to keep a laser-sharp focus on her goals. 

“Most students can’t picture for themselves where they want to be in the future,” Esqueda said. “The most important thing I can remember from AVID was that it gave me a plan for something. As you go through your years, you try to get organized, try to have a planner, and then towards the end figure out where you want to go when you graduate.”

Before she finished at UIW, she also spent a semester doing AVID tutoring at her former middle school, Whittier. It kept her fresh in the curriculum so she could hit the ground running with the students at Fox Tech. In working with her AVID students, she has been helping them assess their skills and, with the AVID team at Fox Tech, is supporting some specialized career-readiness training for students the first week of March. 

“We’re going to start working on resumes and do mock interviews,” she said. “I push them, and they are starting to see the connection of AVID and preparing for college and even after college preparing for real-world scenarios.”

AVID is only part of her job. It was math that originally drew her in, in high school. 

“Originally I had thought about being a teacher in high school,” she said. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do but I knew I liked math.”

A former basketball player, Esqueda said she was inspired by her own math teachers and her coaches to pursue the profession.

“They helped me a lot both academically and athletically and even just personally,” she said. “Seeing them and how they were changing my life, I wanted to be able to do that as well.”

She was thrilled to get to teach Algebra as well, because she loves following the steps of solving an equation. She has loved getting to know her students and being able to tailor her lessons and their learning styles.

So far, she said, it’s been a great first year. 

“All the teachers have welcomed me and made sure I have what I need,” Esqueda said. “I’m really happy I started my first year here.”

Hannah Esqueda no exagera la importancia de AVID. La maestra de primer año en Fox Tech High School es un producto del programa, después de tomar cursos en el plan de estudios de Avance Vía Determinación Individual tanto en Whittier Middle School como en Edison High School.  

“Cuando yo estaba allí, yo era la que se sentaba al frente”, dijo Esqueda. “Siempre tuve mi carpeta. Era lo más importante para mí además de mi mochila. Como estaba en AVID, estaba mejor preparada en cuanto a gestión del tiempo y la organización”. 
 
Ahora ella puede enseñar esas habilidades. La alumna graduada en 2020 de Edison High School enseña AVID, Álgebra II y Razonamiento Algebraico en Fox Tech.  

Avanzó rápidamente en University of the Incarnate Word y les dio crédito a los ejercicios de planificación estratégica del plan de estudios AVID por ayudarla a mantener un enfoque necesario en sus objetivos.  

“La mayoría de los estudiantes no pueden imaginarse dónde quieren estar en el futuro”, dijo Esqueda. “Lo más importante que recuerdo de AVID es que me dio un plan para hacer algo. A medida que pasan los años, intentas organizarte, intentas tener una agenda y luego, al final, descubres adónde quieres ir cuando te gradúes”. 

Antes de terminar en UIW, también pasó un semestre dando tutoría AVID en su antigua escuela secundaria, Whittier. Esto la mantuvo vigente en el plan de estudios para que pudiera comenzar a trabajar con los estudiantes de Fox Tech. Al trabajar con sus estudiantes de AVID, los ha ayudado a evaluar sus habilidades y, con el equipo de AVID en Fox Tech, está apoyando algunas capacitaciones especializadas de preparación profesional para los estudiantes durante la primera semana de marzo.  

"Vamos a empezar a trabajar en currículums y a hacer entrevistas simuladas", dijo. “Los presiono y están empezando a ver la conexión entre AVID y la preparación para la universidad e incluso después de la universidad para prepararse para situaciones reales”. 

AVID es sólo una parte de su trabajo. Fueron las matemáticas las que originalmente influyeron en la preparatoria.  

“Al principio había pensado en ser profesora en una escuela preparatoria”, dijo. "No sabía lo que quería hacer, pero sabía que me gustaban las matemáticas". 

Esqueda, ex jugadora de baloncesto, dijo que sus propios profesores de matemáticas y sus entrenadores la inspiraron para ejercer la profesión. 

“Me ayudaron mucho tanto académica como atléticamente e incluso personalmente”, dijo. “Al verlos y ver cómo estaban cambiando mi vida, quise poder hacerlo también”. 

Estaba encantada de poder enseñar álgebra también, porque le encanta seguir los pasos para resolver una ecuación. Le ha encantado conocer a sus alumnos y poder adaptar sus lecciones y sus estilos de aprendizaje.  
Hasta ahora, dijo, ha sido un gran primer año.  

“Todos los maestros me dieron la bienvenida y se aseguraron de que tuviera lo que necesito”, dijo Esqueda. "Estoy muy contenta de haber comenzado mi primer año aquí".
