San Antonio ISD's youngest students were celebrated during signing day events at Highland Hills Elementary and Hawthorne Academy, with additional signing days coming up for other campuses.
Pre-k to fifth grade students participated Saturday in signing day at Highland Hills Elementary, with most of the students coming to the campus from Forbes Elementary, which will close at the end of this school year as part of SAISD’s rightsizing effort.
The signing day offered all the fun and celebration once reserved for star athletes, including balloons, pictures, hugs and an actual signing. But the event was about more than the fun, said Highland Hills Principal Vanessa Cartwright. It was one of a series of Blending the Familia events designed to give transitioning students the opportunity to get to know the building and the teachers, easing any fears they might have about starting at a new school next year.
Along with creating crafts of the school’s eagle mascot, families attended tours of the school building, and parents had the opportunity to register their students.
At Hawthorne, families encountered a similar atmosphere on Tuesday for their signing day. Lamar Elementary will close at the end of this school year, with many of those students heading to Hawthorne in the fall.
Staff had set up tables in the gym, representing the various clubs and programs the school offers, such as Bear Garden Club, Girl Scouts, LEGO Club, theater arts and band. Mariachis performed, while a photographer took photos of students “signing” to their new school.
“Tonight’s event was an opportunity to start building trust between communities and give them the ability to see what Hawthorne has to offer in an informal setting,” said Marisa Mendez, who will serve as Hawthorne’s principal next school year.
Alexandria Byrod and her husband, Robert, brought their two daughters, Amelia and Isabella, who will attend Hawthorne in the fall. Amelia will enter fifth grade, while Isabella begins first grade.
“Getting the families and the kids to see their new surroundings makes that first day back not so scary, especially with how abruptly everything is changing,” Alexandria Byrod said. “It’s a nice welcoming space.”
Amelia said she is glad her younger sister will join her at their new school, along with many of her friends. The family registered their daughters during the event.
“It wasn’t what we were hoping for, but we are genuinely excited,” Byrod said. “Hawthorne has a lot to offer. I love that the kids can stay here until eighth grade, and they offer a lot of the same services that our last school did. We feel positive about it.”
Robert Mendez, whose daughter is in pre-k at Forbes, attended a holiday event at Highland Hills and the signing day. As a first-time parent with a child in her first year of school, Mendez said he had been “a little confused’” when he learned Forbes would close but that attending events at Highland Hills had helped both him and his daughter.
“We came to the event in December, and she liked it,” Mendez said. “Now, she is excited, so I’m excited.”
Martha Montelongo is the mother of five children at Forbes. Montelongo said she is happy and that she had been planning to move her children to Highland Hills prior to any announcements about campus closures. What excites her about Highland Hills is the opportunity for her children to participate in the Dual Language program.
One of Montelongo’s children, Natalie, is ready to jump in. The second grader said she is more anxious to learn new things than she is concerned about where that happens.
“I just want to learn new stuff and answer hard questions, like in math,” Natalie said.

Los estudiantes más jóvenes de San Antonio ISD fueron homenajeados durante los eventos del día de firmas en Highland Hills Elementary y Hawthorne Academy, y se avecinan días de firmas adicionales para otras escuelas.
Los estudiantes de preescolar a quinto grado participaron el sábado en el día de firmas en la Primaria Highland Hills, y la mayoría de los estudiantes empezaron en Forbes Elementary, que cerrará al final de este año escolar como parte de la optimización de planteles de SAISD.
El día de las firmas se ofreció toda la diversión y celebración que alguna vez estuvo reservada para los atletas estrella, incluidos globos, fotografías, abrazos y una firma real. Pero el evento fue más que diversión, dijo la directora de Highland Hills, Vanessa Cartwright. Amelia dijo que está contenta de que su hermana menor se una a ella en su nueva escuela, junto con muchos de sus amigos. La familia registró a sus hijas durante el evento.
“No era lo que esperábamos, pero estamos realmente emocionados”, dijo Byrod “Hawthorne tiene mucho que ofrecer. Me encanta que los niños puedan quedarse aquí hasta el octavo grado y que ofrezcan muchos de los mismos servicios que ofrecía nuestra última escuela. Nos sentimos positivos al respecto”.
Robert Méndez, cuya hija está en prekínder en Forbes, asistió a un evento festivo en Highland Hills y al día de la firma. Como padre primerizo de un hijo en su primer año de escuela, Méndez dijo que se sintió “un poco confundido” cuando se enteró que Forbes cerraría, pero que asistir a eventos en Highland Hills los había ayudado a él y a su hija.
“Vinimos al evento en diciembre y a ella le gustó”, dijo Méndez. "Ahora, ella está emocionada, así que estoy emocionada".
Martha Montelongo es madre de cinco hijos en Forbes. Montelongo dijo que está feliz y que había estado planeando trasladar a sus hijos a Highland Hills antes de cualquier anuncio sobre el cierre de la escuela. Lo que la entusiasma de Highland Hills es la oportunidad que tienen sus hijos de participar en el programa de Lenguaje Dual.
Uno de los hijos de Montelongo, Natalie, está lista para participar. La niña de segundo grado dijo que está más ansiosa por aprender cosas nuevas que preocupada por dónde sucederá.
