Douglass Elementary School fourth grader Dominik Sally loves to read. His favorite book is Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but it doesn't stop there. According to Douglass Principal Stephanie Ratliff, Dominik is the kind of kid who eats up books.
"I see him with books all the time!" said Ratliff. "We implemented social-emotional learning campus-wide about eight years ago and created calm spaces with books in each classroom. It really helps all kids, and especially students like Dominik who love to read."
When Dominik came to Douglass in the second grade, third-grade teacher Angelica Jordan recognized that he was an advanced reader. She made time in his schedule so he could spend time with her and third-grader readers to enhance his abilities. And that has continued through his next two years at Douglass, where, as a current fourth grader, he spends time with fifth graders, playing a leading group role in literature circles.
According to Ratliff, instructional coach Laura Estrada can always depend on Dominik to help lead and facilitate the group because, more often than not, he has already read the book that they are discussing.
"The literacy circles are very cool," said Dominik. "I really like interacting with the bigger kids; there are a lot of fun things to talk about with them. They are my friends."
Dominik was one of his school's representatives for the oral reading portion of the District-wide UIL competition. He was required to find a piece of poetry to read out loud, communicate a message to the audience, and perform movements to the text.
Douglass has a book vending machine that takes special tokens, which are given out to students who are "caught" reading at any part of the day. It's no surprise that Dominik has received several tokens.
"The books he is reading keep getting bigger and bigger," said teacher Stella Tijerina. "He wants to know what happens next – he stays in it. Whenever he can go back to the story, he is going to go back to the story."
In addition to reading, Dominik loves drawing, sketching, and playing video games with his brother. Though Douglass will close at the end of the school year due to the rightsizing process, Dominik and the majority of his classmates will continue their journey with SAISD at their new home campus Herff Elementary, where Dr. Ratliff will serve as principal.

A Dominik Sally, estudiante de cuarto grado de Douglas Elementary, le encanta leer. Su libro favorito es “El diario de un niño debilucho”, pero esto no termina ahí. Según la directora de Douglass, Stephanie Ratliff, Dominik es el tipo de niño que se devora los libros.
"¡Lo veo con libros todo el tiempo!" dijo Ratliff. "Hace unos ocho años, implementamos el aprendizaje socioemocional en todo el campus y creamos espacios tranquilos con libros en cada aula. "Realmente ayuda a todos los niños, y especialmente a los estudiantes como Dominik, a quienes les encanta leer".
Cuando Dominik llegó a Douglass en segundo grado, la maestra de tercer grado, Angelica Jordan, lo identificó como un lector avanzado. Ella hizo tiempo en su agenda para pasar tiempo con ella y con los lectores de tercer grado para mejorar sus habilidades. Y eso continuó durante los siguientes dos años en Douglass, donde, como estudiante de cuarto grado, pasa tiempo con estudiantes de quinto grado, desempeñando un papel de liderazgo en los círculos literarios.
Según Ratliff, la entrenadora de instrucción Laura Estrada siempre puede depender de Dominik para ayudar a liderar y facilitar el grupo porque, en la mayoría de los casos, él ya ha leído el libro que están discutiendo.
"Los círculos de alfabetización son muy interesantes", afirma Dominik. "Me gusta mucho interactuar con niños más mayores que yo; hay muchas cosas divertidas de qué hablar con ellos. Son mis amigos".
Dominik fue uno de los representantes de su escuela para la parte de lectura oral de la competencia UIL del distrito. Se le pidió que encontrara una pieza de poesía para leer en voz alta, comunicar un mensaje a la audiencia y hacer una representación del texto.
Douglass tiene una máquina expendedora de libros que acepta fichas especiales, que se entregan a los estudiantes que son "sorprendidos" leyendo en cualquier momento del día. No es sorprendente que Dominik haya recibido varias fichas.
"Los libros que lee son cada vez más extensos", dijo la profesora Stella Tijerina. "Él quiere saber qué pasa después, y sigue leyendo. Siempre que pueda volver al cuento, volverá al cuento".
Además de leer, a Dominik le encanta dibujar, hacer bocetos y jugar videojuegos con su hermano. Aunque Douglass cerrará sus puertas al final del año escolar debido al proceso de optimización de planteles, Dominik y la mayoría de sus compañeros de clase continuarán su viaje con SAISD en su nuevo campus local, Herff Elementary, donde el Dr. Ratliff se desempeñará como director.
