Maria Mengrone grew up with challenges. 

 
“We didn't have much. I shared clothes with my sisters. We borrowed school supplies since we couldn't purchase our own,” said Mengrone. “Our story was the story I hear even now from some of our students.” 

 
Today, the Math Academic Dean at Sam Houston High School helps students believe they can overcome the challenges they face because she is living proof.

The 14-year veteran at Sam Houston makes math engaging for her students by making lessons culturally relevant. She described a recent lesson on quadratics, where students were excited to see parabolas out in the real world, such as the iconic water fountains of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. Students set off looking for the parabolic shapes out in their community or on campus. They brought back pictures of the drinking water fountain and bouncing balls. The favorite example out in the community was the famous double arches of McDonald’s.

 
“I believe that there is so much culture in math, so many stories and ideas about the lives of our students that can and should be connected to the content we teach,” said Mengrone. “When we stay connected to what our students are doing and saying in our academic settings, then we ensure that the lightbulb will stay brightly lit.” 

 
Those connections now occur campuswide under Mengrone’s watch as a dean.  

 
“As a Math team we are constantly collaborating and sharing ideas, activities, strategies with each other – creating this collaborative environment is how we hold ourselves accountable to our students and each other,” Mengrone said. “When we continue to present content that connects to our students' lived experiences then they are all on board to want to learn the topic no matter the difficulty.”

 
Mengrone, too, remembers the challenges of learning math. 

 
“I struggled with it in high school. Told myself ‘I’m done struggling with this. I’m going to conquer it,’” Mengrone recalls. “And I did it. I earned my mathematics degree.”  

 
Mengrone is animated when talking about SAISD. About the culture. And what it feels like to work here. 

 
“Joining the SAISD Familia was the best decision I ever made,” said Mengrone. “Anyone considering working at SAISD needs to know you’re going to find a home. This is where you make a difference. These are the children that need us. I love the East side. I love the West side. I love SAISD.”

Maria Mengrone creció con retos. 

 
"No teníamos mucho. Compartía la ropa con mis hermanas. Pedimos prestado material escolar porque no podíamos comprarlo", explica Mengrone. "Nuestra historia era la historia que escucho incluso ahora de algunos de nuestros estudiantes". 

 
Hoy, la Decana Académica de Matemáticas de la escuela Sam Houston High School ayuda a los estudiantes a creer que pueden superar los retos a los que se enfrentan porque ella es una prueba viviente.  

 
"Debemos responder a las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes y a sus experiencias vividas". 

 
La veterana de 14 años en Sam Houston hace que las matemáticas sean atractivas para sus estudiantes haciendo que las lecciones sean culturalmente relevantes. Describió una lección reciente sobre cuadráticas, en la que los estudiantes se emocionaron al ver parábolas en el mundo real, como las icónicas fuentes de agua del Hotel Bellagio de Las Vegas. Los estudiantes salen a buscar las formas parabólicas en su comunidad o en el campus. Trajeron fotos de la fuente de agua potable y las pelotas saltarinas. El ejemplo favorito en la comunidad eran los famosos arcos dobles de McDonald's.

 
"Creo que hay mucha cultura en las matemáticas, muchas historias e ideas sobre la vida de nuestros estudiantes que pueden y deben conectarse con los contenidos que enseñamos", dijo Mengrone. "Cuando nos mantenemos conectados con lo que hacen y dicen nuestros estudiantes en nuestros entornos académicos, nos aseguramos de que la lamparita siga bien encendida". 

 
Esas conexiones se producen ahora en todo el campus bajo la supervisión de Mengrone como decana.  

 
"Como equipo de Matemáticas, colaboramos constantemente y compartimos ideas, actividades y estrategias entre nosotros; creando este entorno de colaboración es como nos hacemos responsables ante nuestros estudiantes y entre nosotros", dijo Mengrone. "Cuando seguimos presentando contenidos que conectan con las experiencias vividas por nuestros estudiantes, entonces todos se comprometen a querer aprender el tema sin importar la dificultad".

 
Mengrone también recuerda los retos de aprender matemáticas. 

 
“I struggled with it in high school. Me dije a mí mismo: "Ya no lucharé más contra esto". Voy a conquistarlo", recuerda Mengrone. "Y lo hice. Me licencié en matemáticas".  

 
Mengrone se muestra animado cuando habla de SAISD. Sobre la cultura. Y qué se siente al trabajar aquí. 

 
Unirme a la SAISD Familia fue la mejor decisión que he tomado", dijo Mengrone. "Cualquiera que se plantee trabajar en SAISD tiene que saber que va a encontrar un hogar. Aquí es donde usted marca la diferencia. Estos son los niños que nos necesitan. Amo la zona este. Amo la zona oeste. Amo SAISD".
