As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, San Antonio ISD recognized its outstanding first-year Rising Star teachers. Fifty-two teachers were honored May 7 at the Alamo Convocation Center.

The Rising Star award honors teachers who are still completing their first year of teaching. Principals nominate their finest first-year teachers who already demonstrate excellent practices.

"I want to thank my husband, my children, and, of course, my amazing principal, Ms. Mendez," said Tabatha Rodriguez, Rising Star winner at Nelson Early Childhood Education Center and recipient of the District's Early Childhood Rising Star Award. "I also want to thank my instructional coach Ms. Castillo, and all my Nelson staff. Without them, I definitely would not be here!"

Due to SAISD's rightsizing decision in Fall 2023, the 2023-2024 school year is Nelson's last year as an early childhood education center. Next school year, Nelson principal Marisa Mendez will be principal at Hawthorne Academy. Rodriguez will be joining Mendez at Hawthorne, where she will teach second grade.

"I am very excited to go to Hawthorne. I have been doing early childhood for seven years - my first six years I was an instructional assistant," she said. "This is my first year teaching, so I am very nervous about going into second grade, but with the guidance that Nelson has given me, I am ready."

Douglass Elementary School Rising Star recipient Amry Martinez was named District Rising Star in the elementary school category.

"I would like to thank my principal for being an amazing mentor, my mentor teacher Blanca, my assistant principal, and the entire Douglas staff. We have such amazing support at that school," she said. "Also, I want to thank my family and friends for being so supportive."

Douglass was also affected by the district's rightsizing decision, and Martinez will follow current Douglass principal Stephanie Ratliff to Herff Elementary for the 2024-2025 school year to co-teach physical education.

"I'm feeling optimistic about next year - I get to work with a co-coach," Martinez said. "I'm the only coach here at Douglass, and I'll have a partner at Herff next year. I'm so excited to collaborate with somebody. I'm feeling very excited for the future!"

District Rising Star recipient for the Middle School category D'Hannah Duran had a lot of people to thank. "I want to thank all my professors at St. Mary's, all my students (I love my students!), my department, all my friends at Whittier, and my family!" she exclaimed.

District Rising Star recipient for the High School category Clarissa Valdez wanted to thank all the staff at Burbank for making her first year "awesome." "And I also need to thank my students for sure," she said. "I love building relationships with them, and they make teaching just so much fun!"

Como parte de la Semana de Agradecimiento a los Maestros, San Antonio ISD reconoció a sus maestros destacados Rising Star de primer año. Cincuenta y dos maestros fueron homenajeados el 7 de mayo en el Alamo Convocation Center.

 
El premio de Rising Star reconoce a los maestros que aún están completando su primer año de enseñanza. Los directores nominan a sus mejores maestros de primer año quienes ya demuestran prácticas excelentes.

"Quiero agradecer a mi esposo, mis hijos y, por supuesto, a mi increíble directora, la Sra. Méndez", dijo Tabitha Rodríguez, ganadora de Rising Star en Nelson Early Childhood Education Center y ganadora del premio Early Childhood Rising Star del distrito. "También quiero agradecer a mi mentora de instrucción, la Sra. Castillo, y a todo el personal de Nelson. "¡Sin ellos, definitivamente no estaría aquí!"

Debido a la decisión por la optimización de planteles de SAISD en el otoño de 2023, el año escolar 2023-2024 es el último año de Nelson de Nelson Early Childhood Education Center. La ganadora de Rising Star de la Douglass Elementary School, Amry Martinez, fue nombrada District Rising Star en la categoría de escuela primaria.

Douglass también se vio afectado por la decisión de la optimización de planteles del distrito, y Martínez seguirá a la actual directora de Douglass, Stephanie Ratliff, a la escuela primaria Herff durante el año escolar 2024-2025 para enseñar conjuntamente educación física.

“Mrs. Rodriguez has built an inclusive loving learning environment that allows for access of learning materials to all students and she ensures that the youngest learners of SAISD with Special Education needs are provided the highest quality learning environment,” Nelson principal Marisa Mendez said. “She has supported ALL learners in their learning environment with the quality of a veteran teacher with ease, grace and self reflection.”

“Mrs. Rodriguez serves as a teacher leader. She helped unite staff and build morale throughout the rightsizing process. She is vocal and contributes to the advancement of PLC processes and instructional decision making. She goes above and beyond for her students. She is a SAISD alumna, parent and devoted teacher and I can only imagine the impact and trajectory she will make in her future as she has already made such a difference for the students of Nelson ECEC.”

"La Sra. Elementary Level: Amry Martinez, Douglass Elementary
“As a first-year teacher, Coach Martinez recognized she needed to learn more about not just her own content area, but also about grade level content areas like math and reading,” Dr. Stephanie Ratliff, Douglass Principal, said. “She reflected early on how to become more involved in other teachers' classrooms, so she could integrate PE and whatever other subject was relevant into her 45-minute block with students.” 

"Coach Martinez recognizes and uses student interests and prior knowledge to open every new unit. This also comes across in her spending time in their classrooms. It is clear she wants students to be actively engaged in her daily lessons, so she listens to them to tie in their life experiences and interests into their PE lessons. Coach Martinez wants students to experience success, so they set goals together for Fitness Gram and students are provided with opportunities to track their goals. When students do not hit a goal they've set, they review it together and set a new goal - taking everything as learning. 'The only failure comes when you don't try' is a poster she hung in the gym which then got replaced with positive affirmations students are able to give her for other students. Students are leaders in the gym and even when she is not present (and has a sub), students continue to lead.”

Middle School Level: D'Hannah Duran, Whittier Middle School 
“Ms. Duran consistently volunteers for and organizes extended learning opportunities,” Whittier principal Mandie Holtsford said. “She demonstrates a proactive approach to professional development. She attends workshops, PLCs, and conferences to stay updated on the latest educational practices and shares her newfound knowledge with colleagues during staff meetings, showcasing an eagerness to enhance personal and collective teaching practices. She contributes ideas during team meetings, collaborates on cross-curricular projects, and willingly shares resources and strategies with colleagues. This collaborative spirit enhances the overall effectiveness of the teaching team.”

“La Srta. Duran es una voluntaria constante y organiza oportunidades de aprendizaje continuo", dijo la directora de Whittier, Mandie Holtsford. "Demuestra un enfoque proactivo del desarrollo profesional. Asiste a talleres, PLC y conferencias para mantenerse al día sobre las últimas prácticas educativas y comparte sus nuevos conocimientos con sus colegas durante las reuniones de personal, mostrando un afán por mejorar las prácticas de enseñanza personales y colectivas. Aporta ideas en las reuniones de equipo, colabora en proyectos interdisciplinares y comparte de buen grado recursos y estrategias con sus colegas.  High School Level: Clarissa Valdez, Burbank High School
“Ms. Valdez is always smiling, pleasantly greets her peers and administrators in the hallways, and contributes to the department's PLC with valuable ideas for planning and lesson execution,” Burbank principal Irene Talamantes said. “Ms. Valdez reflects on her lessons frequently to provide students with the best presentation and delivery possible so that students are able to achieve academically, socially and emotionally.”

"La Srta. Valdez siempre está sonriendo, saluda agradablemente a sus compañeros y administradores en los pasillos, y contribuye al PLC del departamento con valiosas ideas para la planificación y ejecución de las lecciones", dijo la directora de Burbank, Irene Talamantes.
