Fraternal twins Emma and Sarah Vargas both want to be teachers, and they are especially drawn to becoming bilingual teachers. As students in San Antonio ISD, they are at the right place at the right time. 

Travis Early College High School this year has launched an Associate of Arts in Teaching in collaboration with San Antonio College, which is right across the street from the high school.

“The program only confirmed what I have known deep in my heart that teaching is exactly what I want to do,” said Sarah. “It just feels right doing it. When I’m doing my practicum, I know there is no other place I’d rather be.”

Sarah has wanted to be a teacher since she was 7 years old. Emma arrived at her career choice this year after joining her sister in the teaching program. Because of their enthusiasm, both sophomores have exceeded the 16 hours of required practicum this year. To date, Sarah has 48 hours in the classroom, while Emma has 40. 

“I get all my energy working with the children. It just feels super great,” Emma said.

The program at Travis places students in elementary classroom settings to practice the art of teaching. The future educators are earning their practicum at Advanced Learning Academy at Euclid and Bonham Academy, the latter of which has a dual language program.

“Working with bilingual students is the best,” said Sarah. “Some of the kids need help with English. Some need help with Spanish. They work together and it’s amazing to see.”

“Both girls being fluent, they stepped right into it,” said Clinton Roberson, Principles of Education teacher at Travis Early College High School. “They are 100% learning the practice and the heart it takes. They have the heart that pushes them into the career for the right reasons. When you care about kids, great things are going to occur.”

As they begin their pathway to a teaching career, their nurturing instincts already are at A+ status.

“I want to be someone who my students can come to at any time with anything that is troubling them. I want to be their Mom away from home,” said Emma. “I want to be a safe space for them.”

Dos hermanas mellizas se especializan en enseñanza bilingüe

Las mellizas Emma y Sarah Vargas quieren ser maestras, y les atrae especialmente ser maestras bilingües. Como estudiantes de San Antonio ISD, están en el lugar adecuado en el momento adecuado. 

Travis Early College High School ha puesto en marcha este año un Programa Asociado de Artes en Docencia en colaboración con San Antonio College, que está justo enfrente de la preparatoria.

"El programa confirmó lo que sabía en el fondo de mi corazón: que enseñar es exactamente lo que quiero hacer", dijo Sarah. "Me siento bien cuando lo práctico. Cuando estoy haciendo mis prácticas, sé que no hay otro lugar en el que preferiría estar".

Sarah ha querido ser maestra desde que tenía 7 años. Emma optó por esta carrera este año tras incorporarse con su hermana al programa de enseñanza. Gracias a su entusiasmo, ambas estudiantes de segundo año han superado este año las 16 horas de prácticas obligatorias. En la actualidad, Sarah lleva 48 horas en el salón de clases, mientras que Emma lleva 40. 

"Obtengo toda mi energía trabajando con los niños. Es una experiencia estupenda", afirma Emma.

El programa de Travis permite a los estudiantes trabajar en clases de primaria para practicar el arte de la enseñanza. Las futuras educadoras están realizando sus prácticas en Advanced Learning Academy en Euclid y  Bonham Academy, esta última con un programa de lenguaje dual.

Trabajar con estudiantes bilingües es lo mejor", dice Sarah. "Algunos de los niños necesitan ayuda con el inglés. Algunos necesitan ayuda con el español. Trabajan juntos y es asombroso verlos".

Las dos jóvenes, al hablar con fluidez, se metieron de lleno en el proyecto", afirma Clinton Roberson, profesor de Principios de la Educación en Travis Early College High School. "Están aprendiendo al 100% la práctica y el corazón que se necesita. Tienen el corazón que las empuja a la carrera por las razones correctas. Cuando te preocupas por los niños, ocurren grandes cosas".

Al iniciar su camino hacia la carrera de enseñanza, sus instintos pedagógicos ya son de primera categoría.

"Quiero ser alguien a quien mis estudiantes puedan acudir en cualquier momento con cualquier cosa que les preocupe. Quiero ser su madre cuando estén lejos de casa", dice Emma. "Quiero ser para ellos un "lugar seguro"".
