Kimberly Williams, a second grade teacher at M.L. King Academy and the school's 2025 Teacher of the Year, is San Antonio ISD's nominee for Alamo Area Alliance of Black School Educators Teacher of the Year program.

Williams, in her 18th year of teaching, has spent her last eight at MLK. She has taught Pre-K, fourth grade, and fourth to sixth grade science and social studies as well. 

“I love my students as my own and I am grateful to play a role in their educational journey,” Williams said. “It warms my heart when I am able to witness their growth and progress throughout the years. I am most proud of the moments when my students take ownership of their education and become leaders, driving conversations and discovering new ways to spark a love for learning.”

Williams serves on the Campus Advisory Committee, where she actively contributes to decision-making that impacts student learning and school improvement. She has also taken the lead in organizing programs for families, ensuring that parents and guardians are engaged in their children’s education.

"I love bringing fresh ideas and building relationships around my campus,” Williams said. “We must keep the environment of our campus a positive and inviting one for our students and families, and I enjoy trying to make sure that happens – even if that requires me to take on extra duties and responsibilities. I do my best to always look at the greater good of the work that I am doing or is being asked of me.”

Principal Kimberly Barg said that Williams’ efforts with colleagues and family really do make all the difference. 

“Ms. Williams is a leader within our school community,” Barg said. What truly sets her apart is her dedication to all students at MLK Academy, not just those in her own classroom,” Barg said. “She takes the initiative to check in on students who need additional social-emotional learning support, offering them encouragement and guidance. Her ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students helps create a positive and nurturing school culture.”

For Williams, the extra tasks she takes on are worth it since they support the students. 

"I always want what’s best for them even if it makes my job a little harder. Somedays are good days and others are more stressful, but in the end my job is to always do what best supports my students’ needs, even if that means I must put whatever I’m feeling or going through to the side and push through for them. It’s all about changing your mindset.”

Kimberly Williams, maestra de segundo grado en M.L. King Academy y Maestra del Año 2025 de la escuela, es la candidata de San Antonio ISD para el programa Alamo Area Alliance of Black School Educators Teacher. 

Williams, en su 18° año de enseñanza, ha pasado sus últimos ocho años en MLK. Ha enseñado Pre-K, cuarto grado, y también ciencias y estudios sociales de cuarto a sexto.  

“Quiero a mis estudiantes como si fueran míos y me siento agradecida por participar en su proceso educativo.”, dijo Williams. “Me enternece el corazón el poder ser testigo de su crecimiento y progreso a través de los años. Estoy muy orgullosa de los momentos en que mis estudiantes se apropian de su educación y se convierten en líderes, impulsando conversaciones y descubriendo nuevas formas de despertar el amor por el aprendizaje”. 

Williams forma parte del Comité Asesor del Campus, donde contribuye activamente a la toma de decisiones que impactan el aprendizaje de los estudiantes y el mejoramiento escolar. También ha tomado la iniciativa en la organización de programas para las familias, asegurando que los padres y tutores estén involucrados en la educación de sus hijos. 

"Me encanta aportar ideas frescas y establecer relaciones en mi campus", dijo Williams. “Debemos mantener en nuestro campus un ambiente positivo y acogedor para nuestros estudiantes y familias, y disfruto tratando de asegurarme de que eso suceda, incluso si eso requiere que asuma deberes y responsabilidades adicionales. Hago todo lo posible para ver siempre el bien común del trabajo que estoy haciendo o que se me está pidiendo”. 

La directora Kimberly Barg dijo que los esfuerzos de Williams con colegas y familiares realmente marcan la diferencia.  

“La Srta. Williams es una líder dentro de nuestra comunidad escolar”, dijo Barg. Lo que realmente la distingue es su dedicación a todos los estudiantes de MLK Academy, no solo a aquellos en su propio salón de clases”, dijo Barg. “Toma la iniciativa de atender a los estudiantes que necesitan apoyo adicional con el aprendizaje socioemocional, ofreciéndoles motivación y orientación. Su capacidad para construir relaciones sólidas y de confianza con los estudiantes ayuda a crear una cultura escolar positiva y enriquecedora”. 

Para Williams, las tareas adicionales que asume valen la pena, ya que apoyan a los estudiantes.  

"Siempre quiero lo mejor para ellos, incluso si hace que mi trabajo sea un poco más laborioso. Algunos días son buenos y otros son estresantes, pero al final mi trabajo es hacer siempre lo que mejor apoye las necesidades de mis estudiantes, incluso si eso significa que debo dejar a un lado lo que yo sienta o esté pasando y esforzarme por ellos. Se trata de cambiar tu mentalidad”.
