Last week, Shantell Colebrooke, a teacher at Lanier High School and Esmeralda Alday, Executive Director of Dual Language, ESL & Migrant were surprised with the good news that they were receiving awards at the San Antonio Area Association for Bilingual Education (SAAABE) Conference next week. 

 
Colebrooke, who was conferencing with her students at the time of the surprise, will receive the SAAABE ESL Teacher of the Year Award. This award recognizes exemplar bilingual educators who are deeply committed to servicing the linguistic and academic needs of students. 

 
“I was so focused on my students and their work that I didn’t immediately realize they were all there to surprise me,” Colebrooke said. “I was speechless and overwhelmed with emotions by the support being expressed from our SAISD community in the space. That moment reinforced for me how meaningful it is to serve my students, and how important recognition can be in affirming the work we do every day. It motivates me even more to continue advocating for their success and making sure they feel valued and celebrated every day in the classroom.”

 
Alday, an SAISD alumna, is receiving the SAAABE Bilingual Administrator of the Year Award. This award is given to an outstanding leader who is motivated by excellence, is a proven master of implementation and support, and continually advocates for student needs and the success of Bilingual/Dual Language or ESL programs.

 
“It was an honor to be nominated for this award among so many deserving bilingual administrators in the San Antonio region,” she said. “To receive the award alongside Ms. Colebrooke at Lanier, in the neighborhood where I grew up, was very significant for me. I share this award with the mujeres in the bilingual department and with the amazing maestras in SAISD.” 

 
The two will receive their awards during a ceremony at the SAAABE Conference on Friday, May 16. 
 

El personal de SAISD recibe dos premios de SAAABE

La semana pasada, Shantell Colebrooke, maestra de Lanier High School y Esmeralda Alday, directora ejecutiva de Lenguaje Dual, ESL y Migrantes, fueron sorprendidas con la buena noticia de que van a recibir premios en la conferencia de San Antonio Area Association for Bilingual Education (SAAABE) la próxima semana.  

  
Colebrooke, que estaba en clase con sus estudiantes en el momento de la sorpresa, recibirá el Premio SAAABE al Maestro ESL del Año. Este premio reconoce a los educadores bilingües ejemplares que están profundamente comprometidos con el servicio de las necesidades lingüísticas y académicas de los estudiantes.  

  
“Estaba tan concentrada en mis estudiantes y en su trabajo que tardé en darme cuenta de que estaban todos allí para sorprenderme”, dijo Colebrooke. “Me quedé sin palabras y colmada de emociones por el apoyo expresado por nuestra comunidad de SAISD en el salón. Ese momento me reforzó lo significativo que es servir a mis estudiantes, y lo importante que puede ser el reconocimiento para reafirmar el trabajo que hacemos todos los días. Me motiva aún más a continuar abogando por su éxito y asegurarme de que se sientan valorados y celebrados todos los días en el salón”. 

  
Alday, exalumna de SAISD, recibe el Premio SAAABE al Administrador Bilingüe del Año. El premio se concede a un líder destacado que está motivado por la excelencia, que demuestra su experiencia en la implementación y el apoyo, y defienda continuamente las necesidades de los estudiantes y el éxito de los programas bilingües, de lenguaje dual o de ESL en su campus. 

  
“Fue un honor ser nominada para este premio entre tantos administradores bilingües merecedores en la región de San Antonio”, comentó. “Recibir el premio junto a la Srta. Colebrooke de Lanier, en el vecindario donde crecí, fue muy significativo para mí. Comparto este premio con las mujeres en el departamento bilingüe y con las increíbles maestras en SAISD”.  

  
Las dos recibirán sus premios durante una ceremonia en la Conferencia SAAABE el viernes 16 de mayo.
