Jesus Lopez is a busy young man, juggling being a caregiver at home with his last few weeks as a high school senior. The salutatorian of the CAST Med High School Class of 2025 doesn’t know how he will decorate his graduation cap, nor has he finished the speech he has to deliver.

“Still working on my salutatorian speech,” Lopez said, laughing. “I do know I am going to have a paragraph each for my parents.”

Of one thing Lopez is certain: this August he will be attending classes at the University of Texas at Austin on a Terry Foundation scholarship that gives him a full ride through college graduation.

“I’m super excited,” said Lopez. “The full scholarship allows me to focus on college while my mom gets to retire after 30 years as a hospital food technician. She is the one who pushes heavy carts of meals to patients.”

Family is everything to Lopez. Lopez remembers being an eighth grader at Ogden Academy with his parents trying to decide where he should attend high school. Already interested in the medical field, Lopez chose CAST Med. 

“CAST Med was my fit, and ever since, I’ve been super glad I chose to come here,” Lopez said. “Teachers really value you here. My teachers know me.”

CAST Med exposed Lopez to a world about which he could only dream, like an internship with Dr. Derrick Rodriguez as a Voelcker scholar studying anesthesiology.  

“I felt connected to him,” said Lopez. “He led me to so many opportunities.” 

Since he started at CAST Med, things changed drastically at home. Lopez’s dad became wheelchair bound. 

“Since then, it’s all hands-on deck to help him,” said Lopez. “A friend asked me, ‘what if you weren’t there?’ That influenced me a lot.”

Lopez plans to study nursing at the University of Texas at Austin to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). He hopes in this role, he can help people who may not have the same family supports his dad has.

“I was privileged to help my dad. And help my mom,” Lopez said. “Many times, a person is alone, and I want to be there for other people who have to go through these things in the hospital.”

When Lopez begins classes at UT-Austin, he will miss home. Waking up to help his dad out of bed each morning. His mom’s home cooking. But Lopez will leave San Antonio laser focused.

“I am focused on getting through this program in four years,” said Lopez. “And when I cross the stage, I feel my parents will say, ‘oh wow, we have a college graduate in the family.’ And it all started at CAST Med.”

Jesús López es un joven muy ocupado, que compagina su labor de cuidador en casa con sus últimas semanas como estudiante de último año de preparatoria. El estudiante “Salutatorian” de la clase de 2025 de CAST Med High School no sabe cómo va a decorar su birrete de graduación, ni ha terminado el discurso que tiene que dar.

"Todavía estoy trabajando en mi discurso de Salutatorian", dijo López, riendo. "Sí sé que voy a tener un párrafo para cada uno de mis padres".

De una cosa está seguro López: este agosto asistirá a clase en la Universidad de Texas en Austin con una beca de la Fundación Terry que le proporciona una beca completa de estudios universitarios.

"Estoy muy emocionado", dijo López. "La beca completa me permite centrarme en la universidad mientras mi madre se jubila después de 30 años como técnica de alimentación en un hospital. Ella es la que se encarga de empujar los carritos pesados de comidas a los pacientes".

La familia lo es todo para López. López recuerda cuando cursaba el octavo grado en Ogden Academy y sus padres trataban de decidir a qué preparatoria debía acudir. Ya interesado en el campo de la medicina, López eligió CAST Med. 

"CAST Med era el lugar adecuado para mí y, desde entonces, estoy muy contento de haber elegido venir aquí", afirma López. “Aquí los maestros te valoran de verdad.  Mis profesores me conocen".

CAST Med expuso a López a un mundo con el que sólo podía soñar, como una pasantía con el Dr. Derrick Rodríguez como becario Voelcker estudiando anestesiología.  

“Me sentí conectado con él”, dijo López. "Me llevó a muchas oportunidades". 

Desde que comenzó en CAST MED, las cosas cambiaron drásticamente en casa. El padre de López se vio obligado a ir en silla de ruedas. 

"Desde entonces, estamos todos manos a la obra para ayudarle", dijo López. “Un amigo me preguntó: ‘¿Y si no estuvieras allí?’ Eso me influyó mucho”.

López planea estudiar enfermería en la Universidad de Texas en Austin para convertirse en un enfermero anestesista certificado (CRNA). Espera que en este papel pueda ayudar a las personas que no tienen los mismos apoyos familiares que su padre tiene.

“Tuve el privilegio de ayudar a mi papá. Y ayudar a mi mamá”, dijo López. "Muchas veces, una persona está sola, y quiero estar ahí para otras personas que tienen que pasar por estas situaciones en el hospital".

Cuando López empiece las clases en UT-Austin, echará de menos su hogar. Levantarse para ayudar a su padre a salir de la cama cada mañana. La cocina casera de su mamá. Pero López dejará San Antonio muy enfocado.

"Estoy enfocado en terminar este programa en cuatro años", dijo López. "Y cuando cruce el escenario, creo que mis padres dirán: ‘vaya, tenemos un licenciado universitario en la familia’. Y todo empezó en CAST Med”.
