Miryam Gonzalez, a dual language Pre-K Head Start teacher at Sarah King Elementary, has been awarded a 2025 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

Gonzalez and 15 other distinguished educators nominated by area school districts received the prize during a ceremony on May 9 at the Trinity University campus. 

"Receiving this honor is incredibly meaningful to me, as it recognizes not just my individual efforts, but the collective support and collaboration that made this achievement possible,” Gonzalez said. “This honor is not mine alone; it represents the work, wisdom, and dedication of the many principals, coaches, and teachers who have guided, challenged, and supported me throughout my journey. I’m truly grateful for the acknowledgment and inspired to continue pushing for excellence in and outside the classroom.”

According to the Trinity University website, the Trinity Prize is greater San Antonio area’s oldest and most prestigious teaching award, launched in 1982 to honor public school teachers who distinguish their teaching practice through outstanding classroom performance, leadership in the school and school district, contributions to the education profession, and stellar community service.

Gonzalez, San Antonio ISD’s 2024 Elementary Distinguished Teacher of the Year, is in her eighth year of teaching and her ninth year in San Antonio ISD. Growing up in a Spanish-speaking family and learning English in school, Gonzalez said she used her own childhood experiences, both positive and negative, to inform her practices as an inclusive and joyful teacher.

 
“I believe that school culture and family engagement are key factors in student success,” Gonzalez said. “Students will not learn where they do not feel loved. Parents will not send their students to school if they do not have a connection. Families will not stay at a school if they do not feel accepted.”

A previous Rising Star and Dual Language Linguistically Responsive Teacher of Year award winner, Gonzalez can be seen interacting with families at after-school events, whether that means running a ball-toss game at Kingfest or creating literacy showcases at her previous campuses. 

In the classroom, she is known for her hands-on, engaging lessons that bring learning to life before her young learners’ eyes – using fun props and even routine classroom tasks as learning opportunities.

“I strive to be a teacher who not only pushes students academically, but brings wonder and joy to even the smallest lesson,” Gonzalez said. “I want my students to leave my classroom not only hearing about the world around them, but actually experiencing the world around them. I want them to gain confidence in themselves and their ability to do anything they set their minds to.”

In its 43rd year, the Trinity prize comes with a crystal apple as a gift from the University and a City of San Antonio commendation from Mayor Ron Nirenberg. From sponsor Whataburger, awardees receive a $1,000 cash prize, a $300 Amazon gift card to use for classroom supplies, and a $350 Amazon gift card for a student organization or effort of their selection at their school or in the community that supports diversity and inclusion in education, and a Whataburger gift box, including Whataburger for a year.

Maestra de Sarah King recibe el premio 2025 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching

Miryam González, una maestra de lenguaje dual de preescolar en Sarah King Elementary, ha sido galardonada con el premio 2025 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

González y otros 15 educadores distinguidos nominados por los distritos escolares del área recibieron el premio durante una ceremonia el 9 de mayo en el campus de Trinity University. 

"Recibir este premio es increíblemente significativo, ya que no solo reconoce mis esfuerzos individuales, sino el apoyo colectivo y la colaboración que hizo posible este logro", dijo González. “Este honor no es solo mío; representa el trabajo, la sabiduría y la dedicación de los muchos directores, entrenadores y maestros que me han guiado, desafiado y apoyado a lo largo de mi viaje. Estoy verdaderamente agradecida por el reconocimiento e inspirada para seguir trabajando por la excelencia dentro y fuera del aula”.  

De acuerdo con el sitio web de Trinity University, el Trinity Prize es el premio más antiguo y prestigioso de enseñanza en todo San Antonio, y fue fundado en 1982 para distinguir a maestros de escuelas públicas quienes destacan su práctica de la enseñanza por medio de excelente rendimiento en el salón de clases, liderazgo en la escuela y en el distrito escolar, contribuciones a la profesión de educación y servicio comunitario espectacular.

González, la Maestra Distinguida del Año de Primaria 2024 de San Antonio ISD, está en su octavo año de enseñanza y su noveno año en San Antonio ISD. Creciendo en una familia de habla hispana y aprendiendo inglés en la escuela, González dijo que usó sus propias experiencias de la infancia, tanto positivas como negativas, para fundamentar sus prácticas como maestra inclusiva y alegre.

 
“Creo que la cultura escolar y la participación familiar son factores clave en el éxito estudiantil”, dijo González. “Los estudiantes no aprenderán donde no se sientan queridos. Los padres no enviarán a los estudiantes a la escuela si no tienen una conexión. Las familias no se quedarán en una escuela si no se sienten aceptadas”.

González, ganadora de los premios Rising Star y Dual Language Linguistically Responsive Teacher of Year, puede verse interactuando con familias en eventos después de la escuela, ya sea organizando un juego de lanzamiento de pelotas en Kingfest o creando exhibiciones de alfabetización en sus campus anteriores. 

En el aula, es conocida por sus lecciones prácticas e interactivas que dan vida al aprendizaje ante los ojos de sus jóvenes estudiantes, utilizando objetos divertidos e incluso tareas rutinarias en el aula como oportunidades de aprendizaje.

“Me esfuerzo para ser una maestra que no solo impulsa a los estudiantes académicamente, sino que aporta asombro y alegría incluso en la lección más pequeña”, dijo González. “Quiero que mis estudiantes salgan de mi aula no solo escuchando sobre el mundo que los rodea, sino también experimentando el mundo que los rodea. Quiero que adquieran confianza en sí mismos y en su capacidad de hacer cualquier cosa que se propongan”.

En su 43ª edición, el premio Trinity viene acompañado de una manzana de cristal como regalo de la Universidad y de una mención de la Ciudad de San Antonio por parte del alcalde Ron Nirenberg. Del patrocinador Whataburger, los premiados reciben un premio en efectivo de $1,000, una tarjeta de regalo de Amazon de $300 para usar en útiles escolares y una tarjeta de regalo de Amazon de $350 para una organización estudiantil o iniciativa de su selección en su escuela o en la comunidad que apoya la diversidad y la inclusión en educación y una caja de regalo de Whataburger, que incluye comida de Whataburger por un año.
