Right after Viviana Villanueva finishes graduating from the Advanced Learning Academy (ALA) Wednesday, she and three rising seniors from the school’s Modern Band program are headed to Tennessee to perform. 

The quartet, who operate as Within, is one of only 15 bands chosen nationwide to perform at this year’s Association for Popular Music Education (APME) conference June 4-7 at the University of Memphis.

It’s the latest in a mounting series of public performance opportunities afforded to the veteran band, which formed when ALA-Fox Tech-CAST Tech launched its combined Modern Band program in the 2022-2023 school year. 

The unique program makes music accessible for all types of students. After giving some early instruction in fundamentals, teachers serve as facilitators — watching and helping students make groups, giving tips when needed, and helping them book performances.

“It’s such an amazing program,” said Villanueva, who plays bass and sings lead vocals. “Before this program, I never really learned an instrument, but here we had to learn all the instruments before we got to be in a band. The program brought out this confidence in me that was hidden for a while.”

It brought confidence – and really great friends. Those friends ended up being three freshmen Villanueva met during her sophomore year: Marissa Esparza (piano/guitar), Kathleen Juarez (guitar), and Evan Bohmann (drums). 

“Making music with other people is amazing, but making music with your best friends is something completely out of this world,” Villanueva said. 

The group plays a host of genres, including Cumbias, rock, metal, pop, R&B, and softer Indie music. They’ve also worked on a couple of originals as well.

“Anything we listened to and we liked, we would bring it to the table to see what the others think,” Villanueva said. “If we all like it, we’ll play it.”

The three years that followed, the band became close both on stage and in real life. They’ve played shows at Sam’s Burger Joint, The Rock Box, Tandem, Vibes Event Center, and the Cove. They’ve opened for the Shrine Circus and played the Holidays on Houston festival. 

As they played together, they grew in confidence about public performance. 

“I still get nervous about performing, but I have grown and it has become more fun than nerve-racking,” Esparza said.

Teacher Robert Packer said Within’s organization as a band and reliability has helped them secure so many gigs. 
It was at one of those gigs, the SAISD Foundation’s Inspire Awards, that the group filmed their audition tape for the APME conference.  They submitted two songs, an original called “Scout” and a cover of Hole’s “Celebrity Skin” filmed at the October fundraiser. Packer helped them edit the video and Villanueva filled out the application. 

Then, they waited.

“I was pretty confident we were going to make it in,” Esparza said. “I thought we were really good and the program gives us so much time to actually work as a band that I thought we had a pretty good chance to get in.”

Just before winter break, the email came. Villanueva received it right before a test in her statistics class. She had to sit on the good news for over an hour.

Once the news sank in, the band immediately began fundraising. They sold merchandise and Fiesta medals, played paid gigs, and asked for donations via CashApp.

And now they are set to travel. The group departs June 4 after ALA’s graduation, and they play at the conference on June 5 before a professional panel who will offer them critiques, and they will also have an opportunity to play on Beal Street, one last time as classmates before Villanueva moves on to her next chapter. The group members all have different passions ahead of them, but Juarez plans to stay with music.

“We’ve come a really long way,” Juarez said. “I would not be as good as I am today if it weren’t for the band. Before I never had something I could sit down and do for hours and not get bored. I definitely took it and ran with it. It’s such an awesome thing to have a passion.”

El programa sacó a relucir esta confianza en mí que estuvo oculta por un tiempo”.

Trajo confianza – y realmente grandes amigos. Esos amigos terminaron siendo tres estudiantes de primer año que Villanueva conoció durante su segundo año: Marissa Esparza (piano/guitarra), Kathleen Juárez (guitarra) y Evan Bohmann (batería). 

“Hacer música con otras personas es increíble, pero hacer música con tus mejores amigos es algo completamente fuera de este mundo”, dijo Villanueva. 

El grupo toca una gran cantidad de géneros, incluyendo Cumbias, rock, metal, pop, R&B, y música Indie. También han trabajado en un par de originales también.

“Cualquier cosa que escuchábamos y nos gustaba, lo llevábamos a la mesa para ver lo que los demás piensan”, dijo Villanueva. “Si a todos nos gusta, lo tocamos”.

Los tres años que siguieron, la banda se acercó tanto en el escenario como en la vida real. Han tocado espectáculos en Sam’s Burger Joint, The Rock Box, Tandem, Vibes Event Center y The Cove. Han abierto para el Shrine Circus y tocaron en el festival Holidays on Houston. 

A medida que jugaban juntos, crecieron en confianza sobre el desempeño público.

Fue en uno de esos conciertos, los Premios Inspire de la Fundación SAISD, que el grupo filmó su cinta de audición para la conferencia APME.  Presentaron dos canciones, una original llamada “Scout” y una versión de “Celebrity Skin” de Hole filmada en la recaudación de fondos de octubre. Packer les ayudó a editar el video y Villanueva llenó la aplicación. 

Luego, esperaron.

“Tenía bastante confianza en que íbamos a llegar”, dijo Esparza. “Pensé que éramos muy buenos y el programa nos da tanto tiempo para trabajar como banda que pensé que teníamos una buena oportunidad de entrar”.

Justo antes de las vacaciones de invierno, llegó el correo electrónico. Villanueva lo recibió justo antes de un examen en su clase de estadística. Tuvo que esperar la buena noticia durante más de una hora.

Una vez que la noticia fue asimilada, la banda empezó inmediatamente a recaudar fondos. Vendieron mercancía y medallas de Fiesta, tocaron conciertos pagados y pidieron donaciones a través de CashApp.

Y ahora están listos para viajar. El grupo sale el 4 de junio después de la graduación de ALA, y tocan en la conferencia el 5 de junio ante un panel profesional que les ofrecerá críticas, y también tendrán la oportunidad de tocar en Beal Street, una última vez como compañeros de clase antes de que Villanueva pase a su próximo capítulo. Los miembros del grupo tienen diferentes pasiones por delante, pero Juárez planea quedarse con la música.

"Hemos recorrido un largo camino", afirma Juárez. “No sería tan bueno como lo soy hoy si no fuera por la banda. Antes nunca tenía algo que podía sentarme y hacer durante horas y no aburrirme. Definitivamente lo acepté y funcionó. Es una cosa increíble tener una pasión”.
