Students in the Extended Day Program at Wilson Elementary School sit quietly in the cafeteria, their faces either buried in their books or quietly facing toward their computer screen where the book they are holding in their hands is being read to them by a member of San Antonio ISD’s Office of Extended Learning. You might expect a room full of kindergarten through third- graders to be a little bit rowdy after a full day in the classroom, but these readers are totally engrossed in their books. The students, and almost 200 others from across SAISD, are attending a Districtwide book club headed up by Lus Zoch, director in the Office of Extended Learning and Summer School.
“The book club is really, really fun,” said Nevaeh, a third-grade student at Wilson Elementary School. “We are able to get books and we can read on our own or go on Zoom. All of us third graders are reading Dogman; the books are funny. I like that I get to take the book home with me!”
Elementary and middle school students in who are in SAISD’s After School Challenge Program are eligible for the book club led by Zoch and other members Extended Day Program. Each grade level is reading a book specifically selected for their age-level. And thanks to a grant through the SAISD Foundation and The Harvey E. Najim Charitable Foundation, each student is provided with brand new books that are read during the book club. Students get to keep the books and add them to their home libraries.
“I believe that when you are able to read to a student, that provides an opportunity to instill a love and passion for reading, above and beyond the academics of it,” said Zoch. “The great thing about this book club is being able to see students from all across the District socialize and be respectful of each other, even though they may have never met in person. These kids don’t want the zoom to end – they just don’t want to stop reading!”
This week is special within Book Club because March 2 is National Read Across America Day, a celebration launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA) and guided by a committee of educators. The day also marks Dr. Suess’ birthday and in celebration, Graciela De La Garza, retired SAISD principal and the part-time monitor to our Extended Day Program, sports a red and white striped hat, made famous by the author’s famous book, The Cat in the Hat.
National Read Across America Day, the nation’s largest celebration of reading, may only be a single day, but the Read Across American movement is a year-round program that focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone.
The titles and resources featured by NEA’s Read Across America include books that students can see themselves reflected in, as well as books that allow readers to see a world or a character that might be different than them.
Celebrando la lectura en San Antonio ISD
Los estudiantes en el Programa de Día Prologado en Wilson Elementary School se sientan silenciosos en la cafetería, ya sea leyendo un libro o mirando hacia la pantalla de la computadora donde un miembro de la Oficina de Aprendizaje Prolongado de San Antonio ISD les lee. Tal vez se podría esperar que un salón lleno de estudiantes de kínder a tercer grado estaría más ruidoso después de un día completo en el salón de clase, pero estos lectores están totalmente concentrados en sus libros. Estos estudiantes, y casi doscientos más en todo SAISD, están asistiendo a un club de lectura del Distrito dirigido por Lus Zoch, directora en la Oficina de Aprendizaje Prolongado y Escuela de Verano.
“Este club de lectura es muy, muy divertido”, dijo Nevaeh, estudiante de tercer grado en Wilson Elementary School. “Tenemos acceso a libros y podemos leer solos o conectarnos a Zoom. Todos los estudiantes de tercero estamos leyendo Dogman; los libros son chistosos. ¡Me gusta que me puedo llevar el libro a casa!”.
Los estudiantes de primaria y secundaria que forman parte del programa “After School Challenge” califican para el club de lectura dirigido por Zoch y otros miembros del Programa de Día Prolongado. Cada nivel de grado está leyendo un libro seleccionado específicamente para su nivel de edad. Y gracias a un subsidio por parte de la Fundación de SAISD y la fundación The Harvey E. Najim Charitable Foundation, cada estudiante recibe libros nuevos que leen durante el club de lectura. Los estudiantes pueden quedarse con los libros y agregarlos a sus bibliotecas en casa.
“Siento que cuando uno puede leerle a un estudiante, eso proporciona la oportunidad de fomentar un amor y una pasión por la lectura, más allá del lado académico”, dijo Zoch. “Lo bueno de este club de lectura es poder ver a los estudiantes de todo el Distrito socializar entre sí y ser respetuosos unos con otros, incluso si tal vez nunca se han conocido en persona. Los niños no quieren que el Zoom termine, ¡no quieren dejar de leer!”.
Esta semana es especial en el Club de Lectura porque el 2 de marzo es el Día Nacional de la Lectura, una celebración que se lanzó en 1998 por la Asociación Nacional de Educación (NEA, por sus siglas en inglés) y se rige por un comité de educadores. El día también marca el cumpleaños del Dr. Seuss y para celebrar, Graciela De La Garza, directora jubilada de SAISD y supervisora de medio tiempo en nuestro Programa de Día Prolongado, lleva puesto un sombrero de franjas rojas y blancas, que se hizo famoso por el libro conocido del autor, El gato con sombrero.
Puede que el Día Nacional de la Lectura, la celebración más grande de lectura en el país sea solo un día, pero el movimiento de Lectura en Estados Unidos es un programa de todo el año que se concentra en motivar a los niños y adolescentes a leer por medio de eventos, asociaciones y recursos de lectura que son sobre todos y para todos.
Los títulos y recursos destacados por el programa de Lectura en Estados Unidos de la NEA incluyen libros en los cuales los estudiantes pueden verse reflejados, al igual que libros que permiten que los lectores vean un mundo o un personaje que podría ser distinto a ellos.
